If a PC with leadership dies, what do the cohort and followers do?

Perhaps the cohort believes that he must take up his leader's mantle and continue to fight the fight that he could not finish, possibly sticking with the party, and possibly even being taken over by the player who was playing the leader?

Perhaps the cohort sees the party as responsible for the leader's death, and swears to avenge his master and see his backstabbing, negligent, so-called friends punished?

Perhaps the cohort just goes seperate ways and pursues his own life, leaving the connection to his dead leader behind?

Followers? Maybe they're still generally a bit helpful to the party, since they know that the party was friends with their leader, but generally they don't go out of their way to help, and mostly get on with their lives?

Or maybe they also hold the party responsible for getting their leader killed, and are rather chilly and sometimes obstructive in how they treat the party?

What about the thrall(s) and believers of a thrallherd? Once the thrallherd is dead, do they still have some affection for him and are mad about the thrallherd's death, reacting in some of the same possible ways as the cohort and followers? Or do they "snap out" of their enthrallment and think, "hey, what was I doing following that guy around? He must have been manipulating my mind! I'm glad that's over, thank Kord!"

Pretty much any of those. The last one with the Thrallherd, I doubt it, I'd think they'd just not feel the call anymore, they wouldn't go "mind control", they'd probably go "I think I'm ready to go home now."

maybe the followers disperse back into the countryside, with their leader gone they have no strong force to continue to follow.

Or maybe the cohort steps forward and takes the reigns -new pc- and takes over where his martyred leader has fallen.

DM Fiat, but in my games I run the Cohort will leave at the first opportunity to go bury his leader and never be seen again.

I wonder if PC death and subsequent resurrection should have an affect on the Leadership feat.

On one hand, I can see how PC death would impact people's attitudes negatively (that is, a negative modifier to the leadership score):
"What? Follow Krusk? Didn't he DIE in the "battle of 7th Breach?" I heard his friends had him brought back to life, but honestly, he died once already and I don't care to die with him the next time!"

On the other hand, I can also see how PC death would impact people's attitudes positively (a positive modifier to the leadership score):
"Follow Krusk? Heck yeah! I mean, he actually DIED once... but that sure didn't slow him down! That Krusk just can't be stopped!"

Maybe they just balance out.

Now that I think on it, I suppose if you did die and came back, you may have to get a new cohort. If you lost a level, and it drops your maximum cohort level accordingly, then what happens? I don't think the cohort should lose a level too.

Perhaps, but surely after being passionately devoted to the thrallherd and following, they'd feel something after she died. I mean, if nothing else, wouldn't they feel weird about finding that they didn't have any particular feelings about how the person around whom they'd centered their life for a while had just kicked the bucket?

Or maybe I'm just overanalyzing, and the mysteriousness of feeling the call and the cessation of feeling the call both seem much more internally consistent and "normal" to someone experiencing it than they do to an outside observer.

If a character dies and returns it shouldn't have much effect on their followers and cohort. Granted the lost level could effect the leadership score I'd leave things as they are until that level is made up.

When a character with Leadership dies (permanently) I'd immediately give that player a chance to take over the cohort as a new PC. The followers will leave (they don't "belong" to the party after all) but may remain on good terms with the surviving PCs. If the PC elects not to take over the cohort as a new PC then it also leaves. What exactly happen depends on the fallen leader and the conditions of the death.
