What effects can't Iron heart Surge end? [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-27-07, 01:34 AM I've heard strange things like it can end effects such as Frenzy, Rage, and even anti-magic field. Is there any effect it won't end?

08-27-07, 03:44 AM Iron Heart Surge is absolutely ridiculous. The only effect it really can't end is one that prevents you from using it. You could end an antimagic field with the thing. You can't use it to end paralysis or sleep effects, because you can't move to use the maneuver. You can use it to end rage, but you can't use it to end frenzy. Frenzy requires you to fight to the best of your ability, and taking a standard action to not attack something is not doing that.

08-27-07, 07:23 AM It cannot end effects with a duration of instantaneous. Anything else, even epic spells or AMFs are fair game, so long as you can move.

Play it like that and it will also spell the end of your current character as we know it...;)

08-27-07, 11:59 AM The way I play it, it can only end something's effects on you (so it does not dispel a Cloudkill, but you are immune to it).

If you leave the affected area and then re-enter it, you are subject to the effects again.

Straight hit point damage (like a Wall of Fire) is not negated by using Iron Heart Surge, just "unusual" things like energy drain, or poison/disease, basically whatever is not hit point damage.

This is, of course, as bad or worse than the official ruling that it ends the entire Cloudkill. Because do you really want the Jade Phoenix Mage to lay down a cloudkill (antimagic field, Evard's black Tentacles, whatever), then stand inside it and have all his opponents afraid to come near? That's really powerful and easy (you don't really need JPM, just a feat or two).

In answer to the question: as written Iron Heart Surge can end all kinds of things. but it requires movement and a standard action. So anything where you are helpless, restrained, disabled or denied actions can't be affected by IHS.
