I'm thinking about getting toughness, but I don't know if I should get it or not. (His constitution is 10 so he doesn't get any HD penalties)

A Wizard with only a 10 in Constitution is squishy indeed at low levels. Are you done with character creation already, and can't change any of your choices? Con is the second most important stat for a Wizard.

Toughness, as written, is a horribly underpowered feat. A better choice for your character (if you really want some extra HP right now) is the Mind Over Body feat. It can be found in the the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book as a General feat, or the Player's Guide to Faerun as a 1st-level only Regional feat, which is a bit more powerful.

one of my personal favourite is spellcasting protegy

which can also be found in FRCS or players guide to faerun

I'd almost recommend Point Blank Shot which would make you bow backup that much more effective. It also has the advantage of working with Ray type spells so it isn't a complete waste on something non-magic related.

Pity it's core only, otherwise I'd suggest Collegiate Wizard from Comp Arc (It's in a sidebar, not in the feats list), essentially it doubles your spells known. So 4 spells per level added to your spellbook, not just 2.

But yeah, without that...Point Blank Shot going to Precise Shot would be nice, -4 to firing rays in combat hurts everyone, even if they're touch attacks.

No one has suggested Spell Penetration yet for a wizard?

Toughness I have to agree isn't a great feat but for skill rolls, SR rolls, and the like every little bit helps.

Also can someone tell me how spell resistance works? The book's explanation confuses me a bit. How do you get spell resistance anyways?

not for a 1st lvl mage it comes usefull later on

SR is like an attack

you must roll against is SR (like an AC) with your caster level (instead of base attack bonus)

you need to equal or beat his SR value

Oh okay now I get it. :D

Can someone suggest all the feats I should get in the PHB?

Improved Initiative to make sure you go first and cast Sleep, Grease, or Color Spray on the baddies before they get a chance to hurt you,.

Toughness is a good choice at level 1, but once you gain a few levels the 3 extra hitpoints start to feel pretty worthless, and you start to feel like you've wasted a feet. Ask your DM if you can swap toughness out for another feat later, if you can, it's a good choice.

Spell Focus is also a good choice if you're a specialist or just plan on using a lot of spells from a particular school.

If you can change it later, toughness will practically double your HP. Otherwise, I'll second either Improved Initiative or point-blank shot (since a first level wizard has pracically no spells/day).

Core-only, Improved Initiative is going to be your best bet. Going first will help you a lot in avoiding taking damage, and the feat's contribution stays strong as you level up, unlike Toughness.

I definitely agree with the poster who recommended getting the best constitution score you can; it's hands down the second most important stat, after intelligence. It's extra hp every level and it also boosts the wizard's pathetic fortitude save. I aim for a 14 con with wizards, before racial adjustments.

And I offer another vote for improved initiative. This assumes, though, that you don't have long-range plans to enter prestige classes, since this can sometimes be very feat-intensive (such as for a wizard who is planning to go loremaster and then archmage).

I also urge you to rethink the ability scores. Try and get a Con of at least 14 before racial adjustments.

If you really cannot raise Con then consider Skill Focus (Concentration) which gives you a useful +3 to checks to cast spells defensively. At low levels, you can't keep out of melee, so you need to be able to cope in it.

If your DM will allow retraining, psionics, or some other way of allowing you to trade feats in, toughness is not a bad choice, nor is combat casting.

If what you pick now is what you have for good, I think that improved initiative and point blank shot are good choices that will keep value as you level. Spell focus (enchantment) can also be a real bear at low levels since charm person is great in non-combat scenarios and sleep is a save-or-die until level 3 or so.

Do you have a plan for your character?

What classes are allowed? Is it just the classes in the PhB and DMG? So PrCs are just the DMG ones?

What levels do you see the campaign extending to? And how fast do you think that you will be leveling through them?

My advice, if it's not apparent, is to look at the big picture. Don't just look at each step you take as you are taking it... otherwise you will not know where you are going and become lost very easily.
