Hello all,

I remember reading about a feat that allowed you to threaten foes from a distance, called Distracting Archery or somesuch, but I can't seem to find it. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Thanks.

Ranged Threat -- lets you threaten up to 15'. It's from Dragon Mag #350, page 90.

Impossible: I never read Dragon magazine.. unless it appeared in a sourcebook or another...

The feat I'm looking for, if my memory serves me right, allowed an archer to threaten from a distance, and if someone was attacking the same target in melee, the foe was considered flanked.

Distracting Attack, from PHBII, is a Ranger alternate class feature which lets you flank at a distance.

THAT'S IT!! I knew I had read it recently, but kept scouring my books under the Feats section. That was a real thorn in my.. err, brain. Thanks!

Actually it doesn't work that simply, and doesn't allow the character to threaten at range...not exactly anyway.

Basically when the Ranger hits, the enemy is treated as flanked by him for the next attack by an ally.
( or at least something close to that, iirc )

I know, I've gone back at the PHBII and read the whole thing. It's nice when you have a Rogue in the party. Plus, it gives your pal a +2 bonus to hit for the flanking, which is akin to a bard's role in combat. I like that.

... whenever you hit an enemy with a weapon attack (whether melee or ranged), that enemy is considered flanked by you for the purpose of adjudicating your allies' attacks.

It's a very nice ability. If you have enough attacks on your turn, you can basically just give everyone a +2 to their next* attack while damaging your enemies at the same time. At higher levels it can lose it's luster, unless you have a Rogue in your party, though nobody ever complained about getting a +2 bonus to hit.

*That's a caveat of Distracting Attack. It's slightly different from normal flanking.

I was under the impression that only the attack that directly follows your turn gets the bonus, or if it misses the next attack gets the bonus until one connects?

And thanks for reminding me; my character has this ability but I've forgotten about it for the past 3 or so sessions.

That's correct. Only the next attack on that enemy gets the flanking bonus from Distracting Attack. That's why I said "if you have enough attacks on your turn." If you have enough attacks, then you can hit each enemy once, and everybody in your party will get a +2 to their next attack so long as they each attack a different enemy.
