My Druid is thinking about casting Awaken on an animal, ex. a rhinoceros, but he wants to know that the Awakened rhino is is a good choice. What DC (I know this probably is best to ask my DM, but it seems like it would be good to ask here) for a Knowledge (Nature) or Survival would it be to figure out an animal's HD?

To reword the question bluntly::lightbulb
Is there/should there be a check using Knowledge (Nature) or Survival to figure out an animal's HD? If so, what would it be?

DC 10 + HD
that's my suggestion. but maybe 5 + HD would be better.

Probably the standard DC for knowing about creatures you encounter, the way you do it against enemies.

The DCs are 10 + the HD of the thing in question, and every 5 points over that amount gets you "additional information" left up to the DM.

Animals would be Knowledge(Nature), but you could just try to go to a library or zoo or something and find out from NPCs who know.

If you want the thing to follow you though, the druid would need to take Leadership. You can't use Awakened animals as animal companions.
