| Dyne09-02-06, 03:29 PM | The Betting Booth Compatible Games: Arm Wrestling (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8079762&postcount=4) Mountain Top Arena (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=682717) Pazaak (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=8044072&postcount=867) The Betting Booth has been around for ages, in one form or another. It's purpose is to allow patrons to gamble on the many competitions that go on in The Guild House, from arena matches, to card games, to armwrestling tournaments. Many fortunes have been won and lost at The Betting Booth. Characters can bet any amount they can afford. You cannot bet against yourself. In the event of a loss, the stake is lost to The Betting Booth's coffers. In the event of a successful bet, the stake is returned with winnings equal to the amount gambled. Example: A character with 1,000 gp bets it all on an arena match. If he loses the bet, he will lose 1,000 gp, being left with nothing. If he wins the bet, he will win 1,000 gp, being left with 2,000 gp total. The list of Compatible Games are the ones that can be betted on. Also, characters from those games may participate in The Betting Booth, and their winnings will carry over to those respective games. Bets may be changed, but only before the game has begun. Once a game has started, all bets on that game are closed. Bets are subject to maximum stakes. In most cases, the maximum stake will be 500 gp; characters will not be allowed to bet more than this on any one match. Different matches may have different maximum stakes. But the Elf refuses to stay down, and he will challenge the knight once again for the position of the 51st step in the arena ladder. This arena battle will occur very soon, so place your bets now before it's too late! | Shino-Kutu09-11-06, 10:18 AM | A dwarf dressed in dragonscale approaches the betting booth with a vicious looking dinosaur at his side. Those who have been watching matches in the arena recognize him as Ergok. "I've heard this place is where wagers can be made on the arena fights. I'd like to bet 5,000 gold on my match latter today." |
| Orcy The Green Wonder09-11-06, 11:49 AM | A dwarf dressed in dragonscale approaches the betting booth with a vicious looking dinosaur at his side. Those who have been watching matches in the arena recognize him as Ergok. "I've heard this place is where wagers can be made on the arena fights. I'd like to bet 5,000 gold on my match latter today." Orcy can't allow THAT much money being bet. Suddenly doubling your money to OVER your starting money... Orcy can't just let that happen. Would give far too much wealth to players. We'll need to work out a system for bets. Perhaps only up to 100gp per level? |
| Shino-Kutu09-11-06, 01:15 PM | Well, you can't blame me for trying. ;) After all, the rules of the betting booth come right out and say that a character can bet however much they can afford. As you've pointed out though, exponential growth of money for a PC can't be a good thing, so I'm fine with some kind of limit. If you want to do 100 gp/level, that's good by me. I'll change my bet to 500 gp then. On a side note, it seems like there is a worthwhile argument to entertain on the side of unlimited betting. A huge part of a character's effectiveness usually comes from the equipment they've purchased. If a character is willing to forego the benefits of items and instead use his money to bet, it seems like he's actually handicapping himself, which seems like a choice he should have. Anyway, that's just an argument someone could theoretically use... |
| Orcy The Green Wonder09-11-06, 01:38 PM | This reliance on equipment of course is for that character alone. When you add an animal companion, things are suddenly a lot less equipment dependant. If you take your money to bet and get a lot more money, exponentially so... and let your animal companion or summons do the fighting until you have enough money to get really good equipment to compensate for perhaps low ability scores... theres a completely different situation brought out. |

If you take your money to bet and get a lot more money, exponentially so... and let your animal companion or summons do the fighting until you have enough money to get really good equipment to compensate for perhaps low ability scores... theres a completely different situation brought out. Which is why I'm fine with the restriction. |

Would give far too much wealth to players. We'll need to work out a system for bets. Perhaps only up to 100gp per level? Actually, I was thinking on limiting it to what the gp reward would be for the match. For example, since the first couple matches reward 500 gp, no more than 500 gp can be bet on each of those matches. |
| Shino-Kutu09-13-06, 01:02 AM | Despite his defeat after making the last bet, the dwarf returns again to the betting booth to place a wager. "Things didn't go so well last time, but I'm quite sure my opponent got lucky. I'll bet another 500 gp on my next match." |
