Welcome all to the Foundation of Battle, the Champions of Battle come to gather here, where we may discuss what we love the most. Those of you with a martial soul, and those who enjoy combat, come and speak.

This is a gathering place for those who have dedicated their lives to combat. Weilders of sword and shield, hammer, spear, axe, and any other weapons are invited to come forth. Speak your mind as you wish, this place is open to all of those who wish to seek it out. Here we will discuss tactics to win a battle, and various ways to counter those very tactics we've developed. While it is good to know the abilities one can bring forth and use, it is also good to know one's limits. If you wish to be counted amongst the Champions of the Arena, speak thy name and thy title.

Orcy would like to set forth a challenge for any interested parties. As a first act with this foundation, Orcy would like to see the ideas of the most basic tactics. Grappling.

The challenge? Orcy would like to see other people's takes on a grappler character. The requirements for this? Post a character that has a grappler build, ECL 10 is what you have to work with. He would just like to see what kind of grapplers you all can come up with, it seems a fitting way to kick off this foundation.

If you'd like to post your ideas on how to make a good grappler, give us feats and items, and other such things you believe are needed to do so.

Okay, I decided that I saw nothing that explictly said D&D had to be used. So I'm using d20 Modern (http://www.12tomidnight.com/d20modernsrd/Home.php) and the Urban Arcana Campaign Setting.

Powerful races are treated diffrerently in Modern than they are in D&D. The racial HD only provides bonus HP and an attack bonus, not BAB, Saves, Skill Points, or Feats from HD and only the LA is applied to ECL.

The undecided feat
The unarmed damage is actually the amount shown in the Martial Artist class. Assuming that larger Martial Artists deal more damage the way larger monks do, he'll be doing 2d6+9 damage.
If the DM is using Modern grapple rules where you don't have to attack your opponent with the light weapon but can attack others with a light ranged weapon, you can take Personal Firearms Proficiency for the undecided feat and use a gun to shoot people you aren't grappling. Assuming modern technology of course
The undecided feat can also be Streetfighting (+1d4 damage with an unarmed or light melee attack once per round) assuming it stacks with CMA (since it has brawl as a prereq.
His Will is crap. Iron Will would be a nice feat for the undecided one.
Too lazy to figure skills out totally. You need Jump 3 Ranks to qualify for Martial Artist.
This guy has no equipment. I'm too lazy to calculate his wealth bonus and buy equipment and it would really be easier to give him gold and buy stuff D&D has to offer.
Any and all of my math or ideas on how rules work have the possiblity to be wrong

*The Ogre gets a +3 racial bonus on attack rolls. I did not add this to the grapple value or BAB but did add it to the attack line.

Prestiege classes being worked on for grapplers would make Orcy happy. Currently all that he knows right off his head is the Reaping Mauler, which, while having some nice abilities, seems rather... dull at points. By all means, post your PrC here, perhaps even a character idea for Orcy's current little challenge using said PrC.

Anyone else have a take on a grappler? Orcy will post his own in a day or two, hes got a lot of work ahead of him this week. Lotsa hours is good, but it leaves Orcy no weekend.

I'm busy almost all weekand... with the possibilities of Saturday being free... so if I can get something done on Saturday I'll give the grappeler character build a shot.

the most obvious grappler is of course the fighter (not including any class that is made specifically for grappling).

however, consider a halfgiant cleric/9 with strength domain. You grapple as a huge creature (+8) if you cast righteous might, and you will probably have a strength of at least 14 (and probably 16 with the racial bonus). Your strength will increase to 18 or 20 with RM. With improved grapple, you get a further +4. With some +1 spellstoring scorpion claws (exotic weapon, +4 grapple , 1d6 damage, or 2d6 for huge, I think, in Sandstorm) and a bevy of touch spells (inflict wounds and the ilk) you start looking like:

+6 (BAB)
+8 (size)
+4 or 5 (strength)
+2 (powerhouse, can't remember where I heard of it, but basically add 1 1/2 your strength mod to grapples, I think)
+4 (improved grapple)

2d6 (base)
+4 or 5 (strength)
+3d8 +9 (spellstoring inflict serious wounds)

Or

4d8 +9 (inflict critical wounds)

so you should have a grapple of 24 or higher, but you lose a lot of feats that can be used on divine casting. Generally I don't like grappling spell slingers.

The most obvious choice is a Reaping Mauler. But, since no one else has used that PrC yet, I suppose I can be the first.

Synopsis:
Run up to opponent, whack him with the axe and dagger. If both hit, immediately start a grapple (via the Bear Fang feat). As you grapple your opponent, you can either stab him with the dagger (at +17 attack, with no -4 for grappling because of Last Resort enchantment), you can knock him unconscious (via the Sleeper Lock ability of the Reaping Mauler), you can instantly kill him (with the Devastating Grapple ability), or you can just slowly crush him (1d3+6 grapple damage).

I've got a couple of ideas for arena battles:

IncarnumMostly because there seem to be a fair amount of people who would like to use it.
Incarnum + Core minimum.

Luggage Mix-UpIn short, two levels are selected. Each player makes two characters, one with ECL X with Wealth Y and one with ECL Y with Wealth X.
Core minimum.

Edit: Okay, more than a couple. . .

Complete ClassYeah, no cleric, no fighter, no rogue, no wizard.
Core + Complete - Core Classes.

My World Is BetterOne character per setting, first come, first serve. Settings could be Faerun, Eberron, Dragonlance . . . I'm sure I'm missing several. . .
Core + XPH (only for psionic settings) + a single* Main Campaign Setting book (or its equivlant**).
*(The exception would be FRCS which would also use the UPDATES ONLY from Player's Guide to Faerun. Not the updates to Magic of Faerun or any other books, just FRCS updates.
(If there are similar settings which used the "let's make them pay more money for the update" strategy, they will also be allowed their updates only.)
**(An equivlant would be Dragon 319's update of Dark Sun.)

Star Wars d20 sucks. It designers deserve to be beaten to death with copies of their Revised Core Rulebook.

It sounds like an awkward idea to mix together several game systems into one battle. If it were D&D vs. SWRPG, would they use HP or the Vitality/Wound Points system? Or a combination (D&D characters have HP, SWRPG characters have VP/WP)? 'Cause D&D characters would beat the :censored: out of Star Wars characters, especially if they scored a Critical Hit (which is like an auto-kill in the Vitality/Wounds system).

*You see an Elf run into the room extremley quickly, and he is, oddly, wearing no armor. He does, however, have 4 swords on his body of elven craft, two smaller ones on his waist and two larger ones on his back , along with several belts of shurikens*

I am Anir Ruali, or in common, Duskhand Dreamshadow. I prefer my elven name, however. I am a Monk of Corellon Larethian. Most of the monks you see initiate their blows quickly, I do not. I hit in certain "pressure points" and I deal much more damage to the creature. As a Monk, I am trained well in both unarmed and armed (with certain weapons). My monastery, however, taught differently. I trained with the swords of my people (the Elven Thin & Lightblades) instead of the Kama and Siangham. I can harness my ki to blast or become electricity around my hand. I will try my best to show myself to be worthy within this guild. Will you accept my membership? If so, I would like to be known as the Ki Master of the Arena.

If not, I just want to join. The electricity is a spin-off of the Fiery Fist feat of PHB II, with the ki blast feat from that book.

I got the name because of the whole connection to the astral plane thing, and astral monk doesn't sound as cool as the dream monk, and astral is sort of like mind, and the "incovations" are called dreamshapes. It was originally called the Eldritch monk, but that isn't as good.

Eldritch Fist... that's a lot of damage to be calling up at will.... I suppose it's no worse than a Warlock's Eldritch Blast, though, and it is melee only.

That's 6th level if you spend every copper.
That's 8th level if you don't spend more than half.
And there's nothing preventing the monk from buying the belt once he's got some spare cash lyin' around.

000. Unarmed combat doesn't seem to be that popular anyway, people usually prefer to use a sword or an axe or a bow. I'm fine with Monks being the only unarmed-specialist class.

Orcy would have to say that monks being the unarmed combatants does make some sense. How often does a person's fist manage to punch into metal armor if they're not specially trained? The other way would be for someone to be very strong, which is actually represented by the strength modifier being added to damage (thus making their punches hurt more).

Orcy was on "War Crack" for a time, yes. But that is not his current captor, his friend stopped paying. Orcy was fine playing for free, but he doesn't have the cash to pay for it himself. Ah well. Orcy still hasn't posted a grappler has he? Well, perhaps the time has passed for that to happen. He really needs to focus his attention sometimes.

Alright, Orcy is going to give this place a little wake up. He has a few things he'll be posting here regarding the Mountain Top Arena game he has begun. One of these things is going to be a "Crowd Favorite" system for in-game bonuses and the like. He still needs to finish that, but is currently working on NPCs for the arena.

There's a great topic on CharOp boards (http://boards.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=678075) about it. It's so pretty. . . Three beautiful classes.
Crusader-Sort of like a Paladin but for any alignment from neutral. Random divine bursts of inspiration power their manuvers. Not only is it able to delay damage taken for a round, but it gets bonuses based on the amount of damage they haven't taken yet. (Full BAB)
Swordsage-Some people have said this is what they wish the monk or ninja had been. (Mid BAB)
Warblade-Um, wow. These guys know how to fight. I really wonder where the designers were when WotC was designing the 3.0 Fighter and where they were when they were deciding it didn't need changing for 3.5. (Full BAB)

Maneuvers have been described as magic-like, and to some degree they are. Their descriptions are similar to a spell's with a target and the time it takes to initate the maneuver, but only some from a few of the schools are not extraordinary abilities. Some nice feats in the feat section, including one that improves non-monk unarmed damage as I was complaining about earlier. Nine legacy weapons would be the Nine Swords, but you could just dump the legacy part and have nine artifacts.

So purdy. . .

5th-level... 5th-level.... What character should I make at 5th-level?

I'm rather fond of Eldritch Knights, but they are very difficult to make at low levels (Fighter 1/Wizard 4?), they don't really come into their own until higher levels. Then again, making a low-level EK and leveling him up will be more of a challenge.

I'm torn. I can't decide whether to make a spellcaster or a warrior. Normally I'd just be both (Eldritch Knight), but at 5th-level, that's pretty much impossible.

EDIT: Okay, I have my character made. He'll be an Elf Swashbuckler.

That would be Jagggar. Orcy would like to note that because of the ease with which they've been done. He is allowing Arena matches to take place over AIM as well as on the boards. You are allowed one match a day (if Orcy is around to watch it or run it and whatnot).

There have been an awful lot of 20's in the matches so far. Many crits, and even an insta-kill.

EDIT: Nevermind, jagggar seems to have lost herself again. *Waits patiently while jagggar looks for herself*

Dang, Godfrey is tough. I should pick up Improved Disarm when I get the chance.

I'm thinking of starting some kind of betting booth in The Pavilion, for betting on Arena fights. What would you guys think of that idea? Also, maybe allow betting on Pazaak and Arm Wrestling competitions. I need some way to convince people to actually come to The Pavilion.

Also, arena fighters could play Pazaak and such to get some extra money between fights. Yes, that should work.

Yes, though they can only be on themselves, since betting on their opponent could lead toward them throwing a fight.

Sounds fair. I added a "Players may not bet against themselves" clause (well, more like a sentence).

Sir Godfrey kicked my ass again. That bugger scored a crit on me! :(
I lost a 100 gp bet and a potion of cure moderate wounds on that fight. That knight is one tough cookie, but I guess I'll try to beat him again tomorrow. Just keep swinging and hope for crits.

Hm... I might make a monk for the arena. Any restrictions on books? I'm thinking a goliath monk would beat the puny knight.

Orcy's restrictions are listed in post 2 at the arena. He doesn't really restrict any books but he does reserve the right to not-allow feats or other such things that he believes are overpowered.

If you guys don't mind, I'm going to start posting my ideas for "mass combat rules" here (this is the Foundation of Battle, afterall). I will post them up as they come to me, but I'll archive all the rules in this post. Feel free to comment them.

Mass Combat Provided by Dyne

Units
In the mass combat rules, characters are organized into units of 20 men. Units function as their own entity, as far as dealing with movement, attacks, taking damage, etc.

Attacks
When making a ranged attack, measure from the center of the attacking unit to the center of the target unit.
I order to make a melee attack, the unit must share the same space as the target unit.
Make a single attack roll for the unit, adding on its attack bonus. The number of attacks that hit depend on how high the attack roll is compared to the target's AC:

If an attack is a critical threat, you will roll on the above table again. For weapons with a x2 multiplier, roll one additional time; for weapons with a x3 multiplier, roll two additional times; for weapons with a x4 multiplier, roll three additional times.
Once you have determined the number of attacks that hit, roll damage for each attack.

So I was at Half Price Books cause they had a 20% off sale and I found something I just couldn't resist. . . I got addicted to WWE last year and may have ranted to a couple of you about wanting to make something kind of wrestling style. (I know I at least talked to Orcy about having fighters interrupting matches or ambushing people back stage :P )

Anyway, it's called Know Your Role: World Wrestling Entertaintment Roleplaying Game. The main thing that got my attention about it, even before seeing that it was d20 was that they described it as being "narrative combat"
Know Your Role isn't a blow-by-blow simulator; it's a game of "competitive narration." As such, there's no real need to mess with rules for each and every maneuver your charcter preforms in the ring. Without confusing you with a bunch of rules from the get-go, the core combat system revolves around each opponent choosing (or creating on the fly) a primary move he is going to attempt to use. The players then roll the dice. The player with the highest roll describes the action and how the move plays out. The player describes a few minor moves to the mix as well, just to add color and fluidity to the sequence. These minor moves don't do extra damage; they just make things a bit more interesting. After all, nobody cares how well the side headlock and Irish whip were pulled off. They're more interested in that devistating clothesline that almost took somebody's head off!

This means that you get to control the actions of your opponent's Superstar, but you shouldn't abuse this privilage, becasue your opponent will be controlling your Superstar the next time he gets the higher roll. So keep that in mind.Like it says, combat is now opposed rolls. No more needing to hit your target's AC!

But how does that work out? If you've got a character with +10 BAB vs someone with +20 BAb, the +20 Bab is always going to win, right? Not quite. There's, of course, the dice factor, but you sacrifice the bonus on your attack (called a maneuver check) in order to deal more damage or to knockdown or stun your opponent. You've also got the option to do less damage in order to garner a bigger bonus on your maneuver check.

That's more or less combat. Whoever wins the check deals damage to their opponent.

Speaking of which, that's another fair change. Your HP, or Endurance, is your Con score x level. (In addition to Endurance being how much damage you can take, some maneuvers allow you to burn endurance to get a bonus on them.)
There's also Trauma which equals your Con score, but unlike VP/WP you don't take penalties once you've taken a Traumatic hit.
Instead, you take a -1 penalty to all checks for every 20 points damage you've taken. That represents the wrestlers wearing down as the match continues.
