Seeing as the original thread was moved to an RP board, I thought I'd start a new room of the Drow House here. I'll be cutting and copying those posts from the original thread that are pertanent to this particular board. Please be patient with me, there are over 20 pages to filter through. If you want a quick way to access the original thread or any of the related threads, please follow the links in my sig. I hope to have the cut and copies finished by the end of the week. Welcome back and please try to stay on topic. I'll be seeing you.

I'll be placing what I believe to be the relevant posts from the original foundation in this post, with a lot of editing.

Now, this is just what we need here....

House Mele`yon hey - excellent! From Menzoberranzan? Or another Underdark somewhere..

I really like the Brief for this Thread - am gunna change the Half-Elven one to make it read with the zest of this one!

My first question goes to the Alignment of Drow. Are they a homogeneous group, unilaterally Evil (and probably Lawful), or like Drizzt, can there be 'rogues' who move towards neurtality and good?

It has always struck me, that there is no word anywhere about the 'cause' of Drow alignment. Meaning, at one point in Mythology, Corellan, who made the Elves, also made the Drow. There was this 'expelling' (my memory is poor here) and move towards Lloth?

So, that mythology begs the question "Drow flesh - is it 'evil' or 'vulnerable to evil' or is it merely Drow training that makes them so 'bad'?

I'm getting all sorts of cool ideas for our One Land narrative from all this BTW.

Cheers - until Suddenly

Sil - drow were not originally evil. If I recall correctly they were just a subrace of dark-skinned elves called the Ilythiiri until Araushnee, consort of Corellon, corrupted them and used them to rebel against her former lover and the other elves. Araushnee was defeated, driven insane, and became Lolth and the Ilythiiri were forced into the Underdark and became Drow.

As characters like Drizzt and Qilue show us, however, drow are not born evil, but rather become inured to it as they are raised. Their alignment is definitely the result of nurture rather than nature.

There actually can be a reason for a good aligned drow. In the Forgotten Realms Sourcebook they tell you the stats of a good aligned drow diety. So you don't have to make up a story about "rogue" drow.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey - now this is much more like it. Fun, and interesting. This is why this thread needs its own space, and is easily justified as having the right to exist. The Drow mythology is complex, divergent from that of broader Elvendom, and full of myriad issues - that bear on complex interactionis with D&D core rules that - again - are quite divergent from broader Elvendom.

G'day Grimsword nice to see you Here. Hope you've been well.

In the role play voice, definitely what you say holds. Drow are (not unilaterally) decptive, cruel, and malicious. But, in 'strategy mode' which is how these threads speak, it probably makes good sense to make people feel welcome.

The thread seems to invite us to develop 'Drow ideas' for D&D adventures.

If you want to offer your services as a 'bad Drow' come visit the One Land Roleplaying zone - you are needed there. We wouldn't have a good story without vice, corruption, malice, egoism and infidelity. for stories....

Don't have my book here , but I think it is Ellistrae or something like that, she is a good aligned drow godess and if I remember correctly she is the daughter of Corellon and Lolth.

Actually he does. He's part of the Elven Patheon and Narethkraag you are right about Elistraee. She is the daughter of Lloth and Corellon, but that was back before Lloth was Lloth and before the drow were (unfairly i might add) banished to the underdark.

Yes, her mother was still Araushnee at the time.... Eilistraee is also sister of Vhaeraun and called the dark maiden, Lady of the Dance.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A good Drow Goddess! Ahhh, so I see Corellan got his jollies with "la femme fatale".....and now has to pay alimony to his offspring....very not the Brady Bunch that family. OMG - Lloth getting one's wardrobe ready? Goths beware! Corellan and his booming 20 mile voice - Ellistrae needs a geek-ologist....

Eilistraee has been forgiven by his Good father Corellon but she has kept her punishment on her own because she feels that those drow against Lolth should have some guidance.

She provides that guidance to all the drow who manage to escape to the surface world...... needless to say that her Underdark keen just hate her as much as they can possibly hate someone.......

BTW, one of her representations is a beautiful naked drow dancing female with very long white hair.

She is even followed by other races who cover their bodies with oil and black dyes to take part on her festivities.

There you have it a drow deity who has human, elven and other creatures as followers.

And...?

Not to be a bastard, but what do either of those books have to do with anything? One is a 2e book (some would say ''outdated, irrelevant, munchinized and on the scrap-heap'', but I ain't one of them), t'other is a non-essential non-Core world-specific book.

While I'm personally unconcerned with what the Realms-Elves tell themselves in order to make it through another interminable night, they're nowhere near as bad as those Dragonlance weasels, that I'll grant.

They give all of us a bad name. It doesn't surprise me that they'd get it all wrong.

My point behind relating the story (so the ''accent'' was a bit much, but was meant for comic exaggeration) was to point out that different worlds have different tales.

Who's to say which, if any, are correct?

I like playing non-cliche drow...

Drow that are not neccessarily beautiful,
Drow that are not good,
Drow that are not Evil in a classic sense,
Drow that are insane in some way,
Lawful Drow,

I realy can't have fun playing a drow unless it has no cliches, because drow (even more then elves, which is shocking ) have the worst cliche baggage attached to them in the game of D&D.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hmmm, now - very interesting (*reflects inwardly*).

Don't you mean "Drow that ARE good" for non-cliche?

Fair enough - I take that as an invitation to develop a non-cliche PrC. I am going to need more concepts though from you and other members.

Some examples would be good (eh, I mean 'bad' for Drow) - pardon the pun.

Also - I would share at this point that - there is no shame in being standard Drow-esque - or otherwise.

Do you like Drizzt? the Violet-eyed one

I played a half-drow who was the meanest biatch on the face of Faerun. She was magnificent...*very* cunning.

Hey Shadegirl - GREAT to see you back here (the Ozzie drawls).

Tell us a bit more about this mean biatch - she sounds fantastic. In particular, you said 'half'.

Personally, I like to play half-drow better, because they do not get the huge ECL hit.

BUT, I like to play drow because it is one of the only races in the entirity of D&D (IMHO) that has a cool culture. I like drow, because I also LOVE evil (I am having a love affair with evil... hmmmm... that feels good, keep doing it ) Also, drow make the BEST wizards, cool sophistication with a twist of evil. Also, I saw Shadegirl play that half-drow shadow-adept necromancer. It was one of the most kick-ass characters I have ever seen play, both Role-playing wise and game mechanics wise .
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now - this brings a huge smile to my face. Who is this "shadegirl"? Shadegirl! Declare yourself! You two have played in campaigns together I see? Very excellent. I'm sure Buffy would have every reason to fear you - you beatch!

Kev obviousely thinks VERY highly of you!!!!

As to your 'love affair with evil' - enjoy it - something to discover there on your Road.

As for me - well - I am *in possesion of my own power* not *possessed by the need for power* - they are very different those two. I've had enough scuffles, bruises, broken bones, bollickings and so on, to want it that way.

*looks in mirror*
*sees some crows feet - but basically in-tact body/hair/skin* - *blurs vision deliberately*
"ahh, there, that's better"!

Now - back on-topic - I want to develop several PrC's here at the Foundation - can you clarify what you mean by *best wizards* and also, to Shadegirl the Magnificent.

Please describe a bit about your character.

Cheers

There is nothing sillier in D&D than good Drow. They disgust me. What next gentle red dragons, or effeminate cultured orcs. Drow are suppose to be the evilest cruelest race this side of the Abyss. Just say no to good Drow.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you know, this is very pleasing on a Drow Thread. Hate goodness away. Your avatar is a black blob - very Underdark. No doubt I need Dark Vision to see the character within the Darkness.

In terms of Good Drow - there will be many who like them - which is up to them - and these folk are welcome here too.

At a story-line development level: I think the tension that conflicting alignments generate between the Drow is a central element in Drow storylines. Without this tension - there are unilaterally homogeneous Drow of possibly limited variety. The contrast makes evil Drow more poignant.

Thanx for your post - it's great to see you back.

Cheers

Physical torture is so passe.

It's mental torture that really gets to them. Hound them through their most terrible nightmares, torment them with a thousand deaths in a dreamscape of your choosing, shatter their safe definition of reality, tear apart their psyche and violate their mind, until there is nothing left but a gibbering wreck. Then cast heal and do it again.

Of course, I'm a sun elf mage. What would I know of torture?

Delicious. Save for that my only living relative is my Drow grandfather, this weapon would fit me almost as well as one designed for vampires. My wife and parents were killed by vampires, under the direction of the Drow whom my grandfather betrayed hundreds of years ago. Given my experience, I'm sure I could make the necessary save to avoid killing my grandfather.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In my world the Drow/Elf split was influenced by the humans. The evil elves wanted to wipe them out where the other elves were happy to live and let live. Elves started raiding humans, humans raid elves. Other elves blame each other = civil war. the Drow get corrupted along the way and end up banished.

I also ran my PCs through the City of the Spider Queen- after adding several encounters as the PC's were rather min/maxed and had a 5 member party. They hate Drow now. Lots of ambushing, sneak atttacks, and hit and fade attacks. Often the Drow would see them with superior darkvision, get a surprise round and fire off missile fire/spells, and either wait around for a round or flee on their initiative. The Drow didn't stick around for round 2 and 3 of combat.

I'm also using the Book of Vile Darkness where Drow are concerned. Lolth is the ony Drow deity-non Lolth clerics follow demon lords, elemental lord or (very rare) non Drow gods. They also very rarly raid the surface and when they do its usually against elves. They divide themselves along clan lines with each clan having a responsability(food, security, raiding, rul
ership, craft, etc) to the Drow city (singular, theres only 1 Drow city IMC with a few Drow posts and smaller settlements). There little inter clan warfare. The Drow do little work as theres a silver mine nearby where slaves work. The poorest Drow is about the same as a WELL OFF SURFACE MERCHANT.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zardnaar

We don't play FR though. I base my Drow on the old Fiend Folio, elements of FR, and a little from Titan- the Fighting Fantasy world if you ever read those books as a kid.

FR Drow are slightly different than other worlds.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Zardnaar

Yep. My PCs are never quite sure what the Drow will be in my campaigns. Lolth worshiping surface raiders or demon worshiping Sith types or something else. My Drow are never good alighned (apart from renegades). I like FR and often DM it or steal elements from it since I have several hundred dollars of FR books. May as well use them if I own them. I do however dislike the Drow return to the surface. To me the Drow should be rare and mysterious, one of the ultimate evils. In one of the FR books it says something along the lines of " The number of good and neutral aligned Drow on the surface will expand rapidly in the coming years with the influence of Elistraee and the weakening of the Lolth's influence on the surface Drow" not my personal preferance and I can see why some people get upset at FR or hate Drow with a passion.

Question:If a MALE drow becomes a vampire, does it increase or decrease his social standing? I'd think it would, but I'd rather check with the foundation before I make stuff up.

The priestesses of Lolth would kill him. Or bind him and use him as a mind-controlled slave, as it's rather easy to do that to an undead creature than a living being (rebuke undead, anyone?).

After all, it would be rather idiotic for them to let him run loose. Remember that these are drow. They trust none but their mad goddess. A vampire running amok in a drow city is a threat, and all threats are eliminated with great efficiency.

So long as he remained "a good boy," his status would rise slightly. Being a vampire is a status symbol to some Drow.

Can any of you guyss help me(changing the topic somewhat by the way)

I'm looking at doing a Drow Druidess of Istishia(the water elemental god) IMC. She'll probably be an NPC since I never get to play as a player

I'm looking at making her level 12. She doesn't need to be ultra powerful eg I'm not posting her on the character optimisation boards.

Anyway her names Lumiya Kueryll and heres a brief story of here.
BTW she is Neutral aligned. Unfortyionatly I'm stuck in the position a scimitar is a Druids best melee weapon- I think she'll be using another weapon anyways.

Her story.

Lumya never knew her parents. She was adopted by a elderly Half Drow Druid named Rythal who raised her in the Druidic tradition. The 1st years of her life were spent in the underdark in Rythals ghetto, a beautiful underground pond of water with fungi farms. They maintained the ghetto as a shrine to Istashia the water lord. Lumiya would often swim in the pond while watching various creature come to the pond to drinkas pure water in the underdark can be hard to find. Occasionally Rythal would leave, returning with supplies although he was reluctent to explain where he got worked items from.

One day as she was bathing she saw some Drow come to the grove. Rather shy of strangers she observed them arguing with Rythal over gems and something called money. Rythal claiming he had paid them in full and in any event he had no more gems anyway. Infuriated the Drow leader a male with silver hair that had red streaks dyed into it stabbed Ryhal in the side with his daggar. Mortally wounded Rythal fell to the ground and with his dying breath managed to cast one last spell.

Nearly torn from her rock she was clinging to Lumiya watched the water surge into the form of a huge elemental and smash one of the Drow flat. Cursing the Drow fled leaving behind a dead companion. As Rythals spell dissipated Lumiya was dragged though the portal to the elemental plane of water. Lumiya fell unconscious and would have drowned had a quick thinking denzien of the plane not realised she needed air to breath and threw her through another portal back to the prime. When she woke up it was rather bright. She was in a vast cavern with no roof and hundred of lights sparkling in the sky.

In the distance she could see a bright fire burning with some figures huddled around it. The gound was bright white and had a cold slushy layer upon it. The figures saw her and startled drew weapons and attcaked. Fearful Lumiya called upon her lord and called a Frost Strike upon them.Screaming in agony the figures were blasted by Istishias fury and fell dead to the ground. One of the ugly beasts survived and crawled away moaning in pain. Retrieving one of their spears Lumiya stabbed the Orc in the back.

A few hours later the bright sky got even lighter and a ball of fire gradually appeared searing Lumiyas eyes and skin. Concentrating for a moment she changed her form into that of a strange animal and ran toward some strange looking giant mushrooms.

Grud the Mighty wasn't having a good day. 1st of all his warchief had hit him for failing to catch any fish that day. Now he was out in the forest sitting down beside a river with several fish beside him. One day he would be a mighty warrior and kill hundreds, no thousands of Dwarves. If only he could catch some more fish first.

Grud personally didn't have much of a problem with Dwarves since he had never met one. But the tribes shamen said they were evil and nasty and had to be exterminated. The other goblins kept picking on Grud and called him weak. For a Goblin Gud was reasonably strong but he lacked the "True motivation of a Goblin warrior" in the words of he tribes Shamen. Grud wished he knew what motivation meant. To a human Grud was a strange Goblin- he lacked that races inherent viciousness although only a fool would call him good.

Now Grud also wasn't the most alert of Goblins either but he heard some crashing in the trees. Being somewhat brave (for a Goblin) he snuck into the trees and peared around a tree branch. In a small clearing he saw a deer surrounded by a pack of wolves. The dear seemed to shimmer and turned into a naked dark skinned elven women. The wolves seemed ready to attack but somehow the women managed to calm them down. Now Grud may not have been a genius and he didn't know the difference between a Drow and a surface Elf but between the wolves and a Elf he was having a really bad day.

Doing what any rational Goblin would do he wailed and ran back towards his riverbank.

Lumiya heard a wailing sound. Ignoring it she looked at the wolves around her. Predators she thought. Turning herself into one she ran with the pack. While in wolf form here thoughts were somewhat feral. Sensing the wolves hunger she lead the pack through the woods hunting prey.... Lumiya was hungry to.

What do you guys think of this as a backstory for a Drow PC/NPC? I DM and somewhere out there is a feral Drow Druid with wolves as her companions. Grud the Mighty has since been adopted by my PCs who have started to train him as a fighter- in addition to him catching fish for them.

Lumiya rough statistics.
Lvl 12 Druid of Istishia
Str 12
Int 14
Wis 21
Dex 18
Con 12
Cha 16

Feats.
1. Improved Initiative
3. Noble Blood (whatever that races of faerun one is that allows levitation)
6. Natural Spell
9. Energy substitution- frost
12. Empower Spell

What's the length of a drow's life (currently working on making a character for one of my players that takes to long to make his own. His character now is level 1 and I know that another of my players (chaotic evil half dragon yaun-ti abomination lvl. 5 with a +5 scythe, an unholy spiked chain, and a rapier) will destroy him first chance he gets so I'm making him one now since as long as he plays and his character looks cool.)

Long post ang. Shall we speak of drow characters? I am currently playing a Bard 7/Shadowdancer 10 who loves power but hates mass murder. one of her quirks. She hates mass murder but has no qualms about singular murder. :smirk: She is Chaotic Neutral and loves to have power. She would rather gain her power through subterfuge, shadows, and sneakiness. She hates politics, evil, and all other drow that are not of Ellistraee.

Her story: Beyone was born on the surface, a child of the day instead of the night. She grew up in a settlement of good and neutral aligned drow, all disciples of Ellistraee. In the following years she followed the path of the bard, for she is an avid music lover. She later went to live with a clan of Moonwood elves. Later she ran into a group of drow on a surface raid who slaughtered the elf clan and almost killed her as well. She got away with a family of elves and they ran to the other side of the Moonwood as the sun was rising. After that she went out looking for someone who could help her in the ways of stealth. She found a troupe of Shadowdancers who taught her the ways of shadow. Since then she visits the family of elves once every three months and gives the growing elf chid lessons in the ways of the shadow.

Now I'm thinking of adding a level or two of ranger with Drow as her favored enemy.

Greetings Drow folk.

To Anglar

We've just had a drow-encounter in our campaign. In this setting, we have Lolth as their god - but the Drow are more actively involved in surface-world politics. A different take in some ways to "typical" drow.

What they've done - is create a "mythal eater" to "burn up" the Mythal of Skybridge. So - this mixes up the Drow in "Mythal Magic" on our world.

The Drow Mythal Eater isn't a mythal itself - but a series of "energy zones" - over a very wide geography.

Cheers

Hey Sil. Well ang, you said that the posts would get longer and i'm ready for 'em. I've decided to change my character a bit. I think a level or two of cleric should be good. Considering that most cleris take a few levels of bard when there disciples of Ellistraee. I might lengthen her history a bit so be ready for it. I hate to ask this because it will probably make me seem ignorant, but what is Mythal?

The PC sounds interesting. Tell me about Ellistraee a bit - and links with Drow....I'm a bit ignorant of her/him.

Re: Mythals

OK - Elven High Magic (EHM - but Sil prefers the inappropriate term "HEM" - High Elven Magic - because of the double-ref to seams and dresses).

*straightens out cloak*

HEM is very "elfy" magic. In a nutshell - Elven Communion with the Great Weave of Mystra + Nature. It's not just about channelling raw magic through the Weave (as is what typically happens with magic). It is instead - far more vast, inspiring and beautiful. Elves "commune" in groups of 26 to cast a Mythal - and they interact with the very Weave itself.

A Mythal has one "grand" effect, four "major" effects and 22 "minor" effects.

A Grand effect - could be the floating of a giant city, for example. Minor effects are simple lower level spells.

In Magic of Faerun, "Dark" Mythals are alluded to. These are speculated to use the Shadow Weave of Shar. Cormanthyr (Empire of the Elves) hints/says that Dark Elves cannot cast Mythals, because Drow don't know how to trust each other enough to work together on a spell.

However, we here, are exploring the adaptation of HEM to Dark Elves as DEM (or EDM) - Dark Elven Magic/Elven Dark Magic.

So - we are making 'Dark Mythals' - the Volcanoe

*cracks*

LEMBAS.....STALE LEMBAS......
*mad cackles*

*pulls it together*

of Living Ash is one such Dark Mythal. Although, having just read Cormanthyr - our EDM Mythal is underpowered......

It Needs a Grand Function! Any ideas.......?

Ellistraee is the daughter of Lloth and Corellon. She has a brother, Vhaerun, by the same parents. This is completely FR. Lloth and Vhaerun tricked Ellistraee into helping them attpemt a coup on the Seldarine (Elven Pantheon). Although Corellon forgave his daughter, she took the same banishment as her mother and brother. She is the only Drow deity who is "good" and very recently changed her church to accept males also as clerics. Rituals of hers usually occur on full moons where those faithful disrobe and dance to her greatness. It is not uncommon for her to appear in avatar form and participate herself. She agreed to allow Mystra to house the soul of the last of the Seven Sisters in the body of a Drow, Qilue'. It is Ellistraee's hope that somehow she can bring the Drow out of the darkness, along with her mother and brother.

What he said.

Beyone's mother and father (Ellistraee believes that two Drow should stay together instead of Lolth's view of men are worthless and that it doesn't matter if there are 4 men, if you know what I mean) were almost killed when Matron Mother Baenre found out that they were of Ellistraee instead of Lolth. They escaped to the surface and then Beyone was born 3 years later. Since she was born on the surface she dosen't have Light Blindness.

Why do the Drow have *these* spell like abilities?

Darkness: I get it.
Faerie Fire: I sorta get it. Not really.
Dancing Lights: I don't get it.

Why Dancing Lights? Why would race that hates light and does not use torches, know innately how to simulate torches? Supposedly they do not frequently venture to the surface world to use it on light using creatures.

If any one knows why, please explain how you know. Otherwise give me your best guess.

I think the spell like ability should be deleted or perhaps replaced with an other cantrip like Prestidigitation or whatever else.

I'd like to join the Foundation as well, by my count, this makes me member #7, does it not?

Oh, and my drow character...

Soldrin Teken'rae of Ched Nasad
LE Monk 2/Rogue 10/Assasin 3

He wanted to be a wizard, so he could have power for himself, but his brother Solausein already was one. He was sent to be trained as a monk, where he was inducted by the other monks into the cult of Vhaeraun. He has a tattoo on his left arm, black ink on black skin, that can only be seen in a light created by a special alchemical substance.

When a patrol he was in fell victim to a nest of cockatrices, Soldrin, the only survivor, fled to the surface rather than return home. Once there, he struggled to fend for himself in the blinding light. He impressed a bandit king with his fighting ability when he was waylaid by them, and the bandits took him in, training him to be a rogue, as well as teaching him Common.

Years later, he eventually decided to move into cities and try his fortunes there. He made a name for himself and joined the Xanthanar Guild in Waterdeep. After getting in trouble with the guild, he fled the city, joining a group of adventurers. He adventured for several years, before moving to Athkatla in Amn. There he has contacts with the Shadow Thieves, but operates as an independant contract assasin/mercenary/adventurer. He gets permission from the Shadow Thieves before he performs any jobs in Amn, as to not step on their toes. He always honors any contract he signs, and will not turn on an employer, even if offered more money, as he knows his reputation as reliable is important.

Because of the magic items he has amassed (quite a few from the assasination of wizards), he owns a magic item shop in Athkatla, which also functions as a cover operation for his real business. He has contracts with the Red Wizards of Thay, and is a third party distributor of magic items for them, as some people would refuse to buy from Red Wizards out of distrust.

He is a loyal follower of Vhaeraun, and always makes it a point to try and help his fellow male drow to escape from the underdark.

Officially, we aren't allowed to give out membership numbers anymore. We never really did anyhow. OVer on the RP version, we go by son and Daughter rank, special house rank, or other category. Here, we try to keep things specifically about the race of Drow. If you have any other areas of interest, just follow the links in my sig. If you're into RPing on the boards, we are just starting a multi-thread RP.

Nice character background. Stick around for a while and you'll get mine. for starters, I'm only 1/4 Drow and 3/4 High Elf.

Firstly, the same reason a 1/4 Drow,3/4 High Elf would marry a 5/8 High Elf,3/8 human, LOVE.

Backstory: My grandfather of Drow heritage, Maxa Mele`yon, escaped from the Underdark around 800 years ago. Let's just say a little ceremony to Lloth didn't go quite as planned and he was the entire reason for it. He wandered around the face of Toril for quite a long time on his own. It wasn't long before he discovered Elistraee, but it was quite a long time before SHe discovered him. She didn't have male clergy until just recently. Still, his faith never waivered. He was even welcomed by other female worshippers of The Dark Maiden. On one night of a high dance to Her, a certain rebellious High Elf maiden joined them for their dance. He was hooked from the moment he saw her. Their life together was a hard one, but their Love made it work. When my mother was born, Maxa cast a very powerful Wish spell wherein she was "spared" the taint of Drow blood. It still showed quite well in me.

If I ever get around to finishing the novel trilogy, hopefully everyone can read just exactly how I got be this man that I am.

Elves (and especially the subrace of them known as drow) are generally incapable of love. Vanity, disdain, and self-gratification are about the closest thing to emotion you can get out of them (though you can also eke out some full-on hatred from the peculiar subrace of elf commonly referred to as drow).

Any signs of "love" in an elf are more likely related to vanity or self-gratification, though occasionally you'll run across an insane elf who exhibits actual "true" love. Of course, since love is a form of passion (a group of diagnosed psychoses known to be at the root of all sorts of irrational behaviour), anyone - elf or otherwise - who exhibits it is certifiably insane.

Poking fun at your work? Nay. If your writing is anything like your role-playing then it is something to respect, for cert. Nor was my last posting here even directed at elves - their mockery was incidental, merely the colouring of speech that surely you have come to expect by now. No, my last post was directed at love - one might say such is the subject of my own work, of which I have invested a great deal more than 13 years.

I would add that if you think I hate you, then you have been paying attention to my words and not what I have said.

We were "unspamming" the Half-Elven foundation - having a very civilised discussion about Elven Ears (and whether or not Half-Elves have points) - I recall that Zollex was putting a "compendium" together about Half-Elves - and Tenzhi (being Tenzhi) introduced a host of, erm, "suggestions" shall we say....like:

Do Half-Elves have Polyhedrons for ears? and I forget the rest After I stopped belly-laughing - I was furious at the time - not to mention the time we all got called egotistical - and then there was the time he fueled the half-crazed physicist with .......*rattles off list or memories*

But - then he goes and says stuff like he just said in his last post.

Our Elf-Bane is verrry cunning. But - if I have any intuition at all Mich. - he holds you in the highest of esteem. Don't forget he signed

You know... You think that after all these thousands of years in the underdark, there would be more than one Underdark-oriented elvish subrace.

Perhaps an offshoot in which the magic of the elvish blood diminished. The race might have become blind over the years but developed blindsight. Perhaps they're particularly prone to haveing psionic abilities.

These are topics I can expound upon. Given the high level that Lloth takes in the lives of the drow of the Underdark, the probability of their innate magic diminishing is small. As with all the other possibilities you've brought up, the most likely answer which would fit is that any such Drow were sacrificed to Lloth or simply killed because they were viewed as lesser Drow. IIRC, there was one noble family in the Drizzt series which was very psionic. I might be mixing Elaine Cunningham's Drow in with Salvatore's.

I was rather dissapointed when 3ed changed infravision to darkvision. It gave the Drow more of the "cool" factor when you compared them to the Predator.
Tenzhi

If nothing else, the glowing red eyes presented a neat image.

Perhaps there is a place even deeper than the Underdark is conventionally conceived. Places where the dark elves went in ages past beyond the sight or care of the demon, Lolth.

Of course, such a hypothetical sub-race would likely only ever pop up in an entirely Underdark focussed campaign.

It would also present an alternative for a world where the elves divided but there was no Lolth (much like the shadow elves were).

Mich's comments (it's a relief to be able to refer to you by first name - at least OoC - I was waiting for your lead there) are spot on with the Llolth survival of the fittest thing.

To be all Half-Elfy/diplomatic:

.....in a Universe with infinite possibilities - (and then up it to Multiverse) - somewhere - sub-sub races must be possible. So - Tenzhi's olive branch about the legitimacy of Underdark concepts and the legitimacy of Drow (and sub-sub races) sit well with me.

The Salvatore series and Drizzt's eyes, in particular, left me wondering about a correlation between eye-colour and alignment. Prolly just coincidence? Anyhowz - I've wondered if there's Elf-Blood in Drizzt. Does anyone know?

Nothing I've read would lead me to think that Drizzt is anything other than pure Drow. What I do think is that Drizzt is the Chosen of Lloth. He fits her nature so well. He brings utter chaos and disruption to the other Drow. Besides, what better way to bring his whole world crashing down around him than to tell him or show him that all his narrow escapes were by Lloth's grace?

Personal Observation: The person behind Tenzhi doesn't really hate Elves. What he hates is all the Elf fanboys and the creation of an Elven subrace for every possible siutation.

Now - that's a radical position.

I had never thought of it like that. Hmm - what about the Zin-Carla that Llolth supported in Matron Mother D'Ourdin? Wasn't this about Lloth going after Drizzt?

Does Ellistrae have Chosen?

Elminster wasn't born a Chosen. Perhaps Lloth changed her mind about Drizzt, which is why Zaknefien was allowed enough of his own will back to throw himself into the lava (IIRC).

As much as I love playing Elves, I've never used anything but the standard racial stat adjustments when I roll one up. The only thing I use the subraces for is personality and character background. That's why Ang's so smug, because High Elves are just born that way.

Now that would be an interesting turn of events, but it would also (in my mind) give him more than a passing resemblance to Elric. I do find irony delicious, though.

You could say that... but it would be more apt to say that I hate what the typical elf represents, and I'm disinclined to like those I perceive to glorify those traits.

Elminster wasn't born a Chosen. Perhaps Lloth changed her mind about Drizzt, which is why Zaknefien was allowed enough of his own will back to throw himself into the lava (IIRC).

I was wondering: are some Elves born Chosen? I.e. is it a "from the womb" thing. And - can someone help me to understand Telemont a bit more - and the City of Shades. Did Drow have anything to do with these things?

The only one I know of for certain is the last of the Seven Sisters, Qilue'. She's actually a Chosen of both Mystra and Elistraee. She had to be born from a Drow mother IIRC with is why she is Drow. I want to say that there is a Chosen Elf of Melikki (sp?) but I can't remeber the name. The only other Chosen I know of who's an official NPC is Fzoul Chembryl, of Bane. This is just recently.

I need to re-read the Shade triology for this one.

Tenzhi - intersting.

While we're having an "arrogance" discussion - the whole idea, in some ways of "The Chosen" - is partly about "special-ness". Special-ness is a "special kind" of arrogance.

The only way I see around this connundrum - is to conclude that every human is as "special" as the next. Some just don't grant others with this status of equality. Those are the ones to watch out for - to be careful about.

Ellistrae must thus collaborate with Mystra.

Ang: What's your reason for hating Drow use of Shadow Weave - I was curious to understand this.

One can be "special" without being arrogant about it. Not that being one of The Chosen in BLFR is particularly special - you can't go 5 feet in the Realms without tripping over one of the Chosen.

 - e-special-ly true - maybe we should rename them The Frequent.

Apparently Drow were merely olive-skinned in the beginning - before the splitting of kindred. I've always thought that a special group of Drow would already be working with Elves in the Underground - for some Unification purpose.

That's the thing with arrogance. It isn't their until someone else places it there. Ignorance is in its place until then.

Sil watches Anglar as he marches around - carrying himself with a self-possessed disposition. "As is his wOnt" she says to herself. She smiles warmly to him and says

"Without thine self-confidence - the world would be an overwhelming and dangerous place for thee. And for thine self-possession - I admire thee. It is why I find you compelling.

In the Drow world - vulnerability is exploited by primitive forms of power. In this, being a woman is one place where the road is easier than for men. For a woman is bestowed with Legitimate Authority in the Underdark - where a man must work against the forces of oppression and abuse to survive.

Heed me Anglar Golstems." Sil's tones take on a sudden urgency "it is not for me to comment on thine Journey - unless thou inviteth such comment - and I am content to support thee in the mode thou seeketh. This is what an Unconditional Gift is.

Punching holes in the walls of his bedchambers, the sweat drips from him. "WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY! Why did she do this to me. What did I do to her that I deserve this? Did I not give her everything that I could possibly give her or provide for her? How could she give me a life so precious only to take it away because she bored of the life we had together? And to give it to him, he who didn't want my Life until he saw just how precious and wonderful it was.

It was his for the having in the beginning. Yet he shunned it away like a rotten fruit. And I accepted her and all her unbecomings gladly. I was happy to do it. For in doing so, Life was given to me. But fickle was her heart, and Life she took from me, but not for herself. No, she cared not for the reponsibilities if Life, so she gave life away without a passing thought. Gave my Life to the one who deserved it less than she, and she laughed about it.

Now I am but a shell of the man I was. Narry a day goes by that I don't miss my Life, the Life I once had. Many times have I thought that I should end it all, but that would be an insult to the Life I once had, and I cannot do that.

If it were my power I would damn her to the very pits of the hells, even if in doing so I damned myself as well. I would have her know what it is that I exist through everyday, for I cannot call it living. Yet I continue to breathe. I continue to bleed.

Drink and know
Drink it and know it
Drink my blood and know my pain
My anguish, my hurt, my agony, my suffering, my existing as if I am nothing more than a soulless husk.

If I wanted to hurt her, she would be hurt.
If I wanted her hurt, she would be hurt.
Yet, ultimately, I want her to be happy. I want her to find everything in the life that she has chosen that she needs in her life. Because if she can find those things, then maybe I can begin to heal as well. Maybe I can find those things as well. Until then, I must continue to breathe. I must continue to go on. I must.' Silmina is in the Ethereal World. She passes through Matter and is on an urgent Mission. She has been sent by Silmarien to engage this Anglar. Silmarien has written a letter to Anglar.

[b]Anglar Goldstems. I have bespoken with Silimna, who has recounted your violence visited upon her in your rage at me.

While I feel great disgust at the ruin you nearly rained upon us all, I have found a kind of compassion for you. Make no mistake! What you did was a disgust and great shame on us all.

But, my compassion speaks to the real man I know you to be capable of..

I myself in this Universe, did not abandon you - and as you would know, I have borne two Children to this Anglar. However, I have located my Other in another Universe by way of mine magic.

I have spoken to her. She has a message for you and I deliver it.

Dear Anglar Goldstems,

I know you were trying to "smooth" things over by way of "normal" nattering and chatting in our lives. But our personhood underneath the surface world is far more real and visceral. Our core personhoods recapitulate the fundaments of living and to honour the core person is to honour life.

We spent most of our working ours honouring propriety, seeming, impression-management and manners. These are the tools that afford the freedom to "hide" our pain, and operate functionally in a world barren of real love.

But, at home and between Husband and Wife - something else matters far more to me.

That's simply Truth and Courage, and the Heart to Speak from the Core. We danced around the truth both of us. I used different techniques to you to hide mine pain. I use silence, withdrawal and indelicate words. You used brash bravado, crass words and the trophies of your battles that hang in our home.

But, the Truth is richer and more vibrant than the focus on a foolish dance that conceals mine and your pain.

I ask two things of you:

To extend your sight into mine world.
To say "I Am" from the point of Vulnerability within. Not the barn-storming, hero-bravo show off of masculinity. I need you to tell it real.

I realise that what I'm asking will be a distress or taken as insult. But, there's no use getting angry about it or hiding from it by going deaf.

I'm not attacking you personally, but I'm asking you to draw on your courage to speak from the Core.

I really felt lonely this morning. Thinly stretched. That was saying to me that I've made a mistake in how I've approached "us", as much as anything else. I realise that I've coccooned myself away too, and that this was the reason I forgot how to care for you. So - even across the Universes, I write to you. Now that you are far away, I am safe to speak my truth.

Speak to me of The Two Fundaments of Love - and I will Hear you.

But that Riddle is for you to discover and in your own time. In the meantime - respect my Choice to be apart from you.

much love

Turning to Silimna, "For the wrongs I visited upon you I can only say that I am sorry. I do not expect you to forgive me. That is something I must earn. But you misunderstood this pain of mine. She watches him very closely as he speaks. She says "yet you do speak of one and the same person, at least in part, do you not. The partitioning of blame is not the vehicle or reason that she has written to you.

I think, Anglar Goldstems, if you take a careful and considered look, you have a Path before you that she has offered.

She cannot force or make you attempt it.

As to mine own pain - this apology is the first sign of any reparation you have made towards me. Therefore, you'll excuse me" she hisses "if I'm not yet able to hear the undercurrent of kindness you bestow. You are a thought vampire. Do you know what it is like to have someone take your thoughts from you when you do not offer them freely?" she calms noticably and sighs "However - I will not indulge Shar's wish to seduce me with anger. Therefore - I give you my word to reflect upon your words.

As to your pain" she says as she looks at the red tears "I cannot repair it, or offer remedy in this moment. However - if you approach me an mine at some future juncture - we will do what we can for you.

What I need is something that no one present is capable of giving me. Nor do I have the slightest idea of where such a person is. I must merely continue to look. Perhaps I will find this person, or this person will find me, or we will find each other.

It is difficult to understand. I know. But I cannot say to you exactly what it is that I need. It is not out of some machoism, merely that to tell you, I feel, would be unfair to you. I don't want to be unfair to you or anyone else.

I preyed upon your thoughts. I violated you in a horrible way. Yet I can only ask you to believe me that what I did to you pales in comparrison to what she did to me. You knew me to be evil from the beginning. I thought she was my forever. Betrayal was the sin she visited upon me.

This is not something you can help me with. It is no fault of yours. The conditions are simply beyond your control. I must face demon alone, until I find that someone who will face it with me."

I am not your rescuer. You are correct.

But what I can say is that you are not alone in having been betrayed.

And - she has communicated to you through the device of a letter and this letter is come to you from another universe.

That is no small thing Anglar Goldstems" she says with wide eyes "and that gesture should speak to you. She is asking you to embrace change, if I am not mistaken.

Look again and find something else in that which you deem so certain. The betrayal is in the casting of perception. Mayhap that betrayal is not as real as you deem.

In any case - you are a father in another life. With that compassion left within you, know that your sires walk the world. For Tel'Vinya Quessir are come."

At that last comment - Silimna's frosty disposition softens a little.

She says to him "Because, you have blind spots you know." she paces carefully around the chambers as she speaks, looking at the artwork in his room. "There are things I know about you that you don't know because you conceal them from yourself." she says without scorn and with the first touches of a real smile."
