The trail that brought you this far through, through the rough terrain of the Deeping quarry and the Wooded Slopes, to the Sunrise Mountains themselves, is one you would not likely have been willing to follow if not for the end you now have in sight. Here before you on a plateau high in the mountains stands the monastery of the Awakened Fists. The atmosphere is cold at such an altitude, but as you enter the compound you notice that none of the monks show any signs of discomfort-these men have truly attuned themselves physically.

The outer edge of the complex is surrounded by a wooded wall, which while no doubt reinforced in some way, is not meant to stop any type of army. The monks who live here no full well that the mountains will do a better job of that then any walls could. Past the wall you find an expanse of gardens and small groves filled with monks either sitting or meditation or simply strolling through the gardens tranquilly.

As you near the center of the complex, you can’t help but stop and admire the sparring ring where a few of the monks are honing their martial prowess. The two men battling within look to be of about equal strength and they both fight with amazing quickness and agility. This is truly a place where men come to achieve the pinnacle of physical development, turning their bodies into instruments capable of things those of lesser will could only dream of.

Finally you reach the monastery itself, near the middle of the complex. For the first time since your arrival a man comes to great you, giving a quick nod and waving for you to follows him into the monastery. Inside is a stark contrast to the magnificent gardens surrounding the building, each room plain and lacking aesthetic appeal. The simplicity of the monastery is both harsh and demanding and comforting at the same time.

You follow the man as he leads you through the relatively small building to until he abruptly stops before a paper door with some complex markings on it and turns to you. “You will now enter the hall of serenity. No harm may befall you here,” he says “and you may not harm another. Shino-kutu, the leader or our order, awaits you within.”

Inside the hall is a man sitting, legs crossed, eyes locked on you as you enter. He wears nothing other that the blood red, flowing pants around his waist and you notice how large and muscular he is-although his current posture is deceiving, you are sure he must stand about 11’ tall. His striking silver hair is tied back in a tail and you notice his eyes are likewise shining silver. As you approach he says, “Hello stranger, my name is Shino-kutu. I hope you find this monastery a calming haven amongst the storm without. Tyranor can be a vicious place at times and the mountains are no less so. Your journey must have been a taxing one and soon I will send you to the spring where you might bathe and regain your stamina, but first I must know the purpose of you visit. If you are merely passing this way on some grander journey rest awhile and continue your travel, but if you have come to train your body and soul then our order will help you with the awakening.”

This guild is dedicated to the the monk class. All kinds of monk ideas are welcome here and while we wish to be an active part of Tyranor, we will also be interested in developing monk concepts such as new PrCs, feats, monk weapons, fighting styles, and the like. If you are interested in monks please join, but keep in mind a few rules.

1)Any character must be based on the monk class in order to join. Mechanically this means that more than 50% of your character levels must be from the monk class or monk related PrCs. Ninjas may also be permitted.

2)The Order has a strict code to which all members must adhere. The code will be psoted here in the near future, and it will help you decide what kind of character will be appropriate. While I do not plan to have the code forbid certain alignments, it will be built around ideas of law, justice, dedication, etc., which may make it more difficult for characters of certain alignments.

3)Have fun. Talk about whatever you want here as long as it is related to the guild. Monks are by far my favorite class and I will greatly enjoy running a guild dedicated to it, so make sure you enjoy it as well!

Ya, nice intro Shino. If I remember correctly though, locations will be chosen in a kind of lottery, so I don't know if you will actually be in Sunrise Hills. With any luck you'll be able to maintain that location though.

In any case, I'm happy to see a "guild" for monks. I'm suprised no one did this before, and I will be sure to post a character as soon as I can.

I think people should just be able to claim districts. If someone else wants it, they have to fight for it. But other than that, it's first come first serve, I would think.

Oh yeah, and I claim the Storm Peaks. They fit my character's guild, too. :D

EDIT: To be more on-topic, I may make some kind of character here at some time. I'm thinking a DBZ type Psionic Fist. KB, how did you make your DBZ character?

That's great. I'm thinking about setting up a few roles to fill in the guild and although they won't be used so much for ranking, they will correspond to what types of characters people have. So far the list looks like:

Master of Fists: For the common unarmed monk fighter.
Master of Blades: For monks who use bladed melee weapons. This one might need to change to include monks who use all kinds of weapons other than unarmed strike and the normal monk weapons.
Master of Holds: Grappler Monk.
Master of Divinity: For divine caster monks (my character is one of these).
Master of Arcana: For arcane caster monks.
Master of Will: For psionic monk builds.
Master of Stealth: In case we have some ninjas in the guild.

If I'm missing key categories, let me know. These were what I came up with when first creating the idea for this guild, but I will add to the list if I'm leaving out monk concepts.

As for location, I think I remember what you are talking about gabrion, and if we have to choose locations like the set up for Risk, then I guess we'll just roll with it. If we can stay in these mountains though, all the better.

One more idea I want to throw out there is a functional sparring arena. I would like to have an arena in the monastery where the monks can test their physical prowess against one another. My idea right now is to have it magically enchanted so that all types of damage are non-lethal in the arena, but still drop your hit points normally. The fights wouldn't give anyone XP, since they are just practice, but it would be a way for the monks in the monastery to keep up a real feeling of monastic training. I think the most effective way of doing this would be to have people pair up who want to spar and we can have the sparring activity go on in sblocks so everyone else can continue their discussions in the thread. How does this idea sound? Is this actually legal under the rules? I figure it should be since it won't have any effect on the game, but I thought I would check.

That's how we'd do it, except instead of armies, they'd be Assets. I'll talk about this more on the MetaThread... in the mean time...

Here's my Anime Martial Artist build!

2)No evil characters. Sorry, but we wish to maintain neutrality and an emphasis on law, so I would rather not throw evil into the mix. Good characters are allowed because I feel they have less potential for disrupting the atmosphere of the game. If everyone disagrees with this we may have to review the rule, but for now, no bad guys.

There is a big problem with this.

It it not a matter of "they have less potential for disrupting the atmosphere of the game." Good is just as likely to "disrupt" things if those things are Evil. It is the same for Lawful and Chaotic and for all alignments.
If you are going to put a restriction on the alinments then you should have it so that only Lawfuls can join and just say that guild members can't attack fellow members.

If he wants to bar evil from his guild he can. I have nothing against that. I was just pointing out the error in his logic and it is no realy that Evil in it self is more likely to break laws it is chaotic that is. If you judge by good and evil alone then it still works since no matter the alinment if there is a law that doesnt work for you then you will likely break it. Good people break evil laws and evil people break good laws. if everyone here is Lawful then it is unlikely they will break the very things they believe in as Lawful characters. If you disagree with this that is fine these are just my thoughts and if you can make a counter stament toward hem then please do I like being in depates.

Well the logic behind this, which KB alluded to, is that lawful doesn't work as well with evil as it does with good. Now obviously many disagree with this (and obvioulsy the fact that LE exists is a bit of a problem), but I'm looking at evil characters as the typical power-hungry, know-no-bounds type.

The problem is that evil characters are prone to lying, cheating, and scheming (lawful ones just do these things in a more clever and structured way), and all of these things are difficult to permit in a monastery atmosphere. If law and order are to prevail, honesty and good will are necessary components.

Sorry, but I just think law and good go together better than law and evil. I'm open to discussion though, because I may just be hung up on what I want the monastery to be, so let me know what your thoughts are.

Yeah, that explains it. Why does the feat suck, though? If you take Psionic Meditation, you could the feat every round. With Great Psionic Fist, you would be doing an extra 4d6 damage, even though you'd have to give up your extra attacks (which usually miss anyway).

Actually, this is how I see it:

Lawful Good characters try to obey the law, and even try to enforce it in the hopes of helping those that the law protects.

Lawful Neutral characters try to obey the law, word for word, and enforce it word for word. They worry less about the intent behind the law and more on how the law is worded.

Lawful Evil characters are hesitant to break the law, but they are quite capable of bending the law. Lawful Evil really try to abuse the law to suit their own wants.

Whether D&D likes it or not, Good and Law really are pretty related, as are Evil and Chaos. In many series, Good and Justice are tied in to the same thing, while Chaos and Evil are linked.

An example to prove my point:
In D&D, tyrants are considered Lawful Evil. But how many tyrants have you heard of that murder many people? Even though murder is against their own laws. As I said, tyranny is all about bending the law for your own personal gain.
Cazic

Evil Law only exists in an Evil environment. Even in a Neutral environment, laws favor good over evil. The whole purpose of law is to protect the citizens from certain things happening to them. One of the themes of Good is to protect the innocent.

Not really. Law is controlled by government. Government is established by citizens in the hopes that the government will take care of them. Law that is actually fulfilling its purpose is good in nature. The PHB even says that Neutrals favor Good over Evil, even though they are commited to neither, since Good is more likely to help them out than Evil.

In a metaphor, I see both Good and Law as matter, whilst Evil and Chaos are antimatter. Good usually centers around creation while Evil focuses around destruction. This is why Good Clerics spontaneously cast Cure spells and Evil Clerics spontaneously cast Inflict spells. In the same way, Law focuses on preserving, while Chaos focuses on change.

I think both of you are correct in what you are saying.

Cazic, you're right that the idea of law is outside of good or evil. One popular example is a thieve's guild that operates by a strict code, but does some bad things, making them lawful evil (if the things they are doing are actually bad).

Dyne, you're right that when we think of a just government, the laws are usually ordered toward good. This brought me to the realization that an order of monks could be good or evil, depending on the values they embrace.

I think the solution to this is that I need to come up with a "code" for the order, so the system of laws they live by are outlined for those who join. I will post this as soon as I can come up with all of th ideas and while it won't have prerogatives to bechampions of good, it will most likely make the order such that, as I said before, evil characters won't fit in with the atmosphere. Thanks for bringing up the issue though guys.

Creep anyone else out that nearly every guild has some sort of alignment discussion at some point in time?

I think I might make a Panther Shen, Tiger Shen, or a were-tiger Monk. Still have to decide.

In the world I'm trying to create one of the two nations I've thought extensively about is ruled by weretiger monks. Elite guards are Tiger Shen. Just don't be a wererat in town.

Doesn't creep me out, just annoys me. I think D&D alignments are very stupid in some ways.

Also on the "Must have half monkish levels." I dont think this should be a full thing. You could get a much wider range of characters if you made it "Must by Monk style." My own Wizard PC is in some aspects monkish since he put great merit in diseplen (Dont think I spelled that right). Also a friend of mine who I should be getting into the boards soon is goning to be a Sorc 5/Dragon Dis. 10, but the PC's personality is guardian/monk based.

I'm not sure if Were Tigers could be monks. The lycanthropy really places heft restrictions on alignment, and Were Tigers are neutral. Perhaps we could get a GM to be a little lenient here.

Well Cazic, I do want to draw in as many players as possible, but I want them to be monk typ characters. If you have other classes that are casters, but act as monks, then by all means post it here. If it would fit into our order, then it will be allowed.

What I don't want though is characters who aren't monk-like at all joining the order. There are many guilds for other types of characters. If they visit they will always be welcome, but to actually become a member of the guild requires a type of dedication that is exclusive to monk based classes and PrCs.

04-28-05, 11:30 PM
Unless all our dragons are the alignment of their color, I see no reason why the typical alignment of lycanthropes would be enforced.

All Shen continue to get monk AC bonus and unarmed damage. They get ki strike silver and cold iron, (improved) uncanny dodge and evasion. Each Shen has a hybrid form (4/day @9th level) and special abilities based on the form (as well as additional requirements and class skills.
The tiger for example gets Toughness and Endurance, becomes immune to all fear effects, once per day per shen level the tiger shen can make an attack which ignores all armor and if it connects, the target has to make a saving throw or be paralized for one round, and finally the tiger shen can frenzy getting +4 to Str and gaining damage reduction. Hybrid form gains +4 to Str and unarmed attack deals bludgoning or slashing.
Dyne

Lycanthropy has more specific restrictions:

When a character contracts lycanthropy through a lycanthrope’s bite (see above), no symptoms appear until the first night of the next full moon. On that night, the afflicted character involuntarily assumes animal form and forgets his or her own identity, temporarily becoming an NPC. The character remains in animal form, assuming the appropriate alignment, until the next dawn.

and

A character with awareness of his condition retains his identity and does not lose control of his actions if he changes. However, each time he changes to his animal form, he must make a Will save (DC 15 + number of times he has been in animal form) or permanently assume the alignment of his animal form in all shapes.
Once a character becomes aware of his affliction, he can now voluntarily attempt to change to animal or hybrid form, using the appropriate Control Shape check DC. An attempt is a standard action and can be made each round. Any voluntary change to animal or hybrid form immediately and permanently changes the character’s alignment to that of the appropriate lycanthrope.

I think the requirements for joining the guild are pretty reasonable if what you are looking for is a nuetral to good group of ascetics. Just keep in mind that you won't be allowing things like the Monk of the Long Death from FR, so it will be leaving a bit of the monk community out of the guild. I don't know if there are more evil monk PrCs, but MotLD is just one.

Keeping out non-monk characters seems appropriate. Sure a wizard may have a little bit of a monk attitude, but that doesn't warrant him being in an order of monks. It's best if the guild members have different ideas behind their characters, but a Monk 9/Wizard 1 should be in the order while a wizard 9/monk 1 shouldn't.

Sparring sounds like a fine idea. It will give members a chance to test their combat skills without having it actually affect the game. I'm not sure if it is allowed on the forum though. I don't see why it wouldn't be, but they did set up a specific arena for fights, so maybe they don't want that stuff going on on the guild threads.
jagggar

04-28-05, 11:45 PM
Yeah, PrC. But you don't have to be were to take it.
Probably have to ask the GMs about it then, but I personally don't see any reason why not.

Perhaps for membership you have to be willing to accept the code that you/we come up with. I see the code being something along the lines of not bringing any undue attention to the guild (that keeps evil monks from joining and trying to use the guild as cover), some sort of training which could qualify as martial arts or unarmed combat in some way, and something else to keep the psycho chaotics out.
Dyne

04-28-05, 11:59 PM

No, it's the psycho lawfuls that you really have to watch out for. :shifty:

How about "Members must demonstrate exceptional mental focus," or "Those of restless spirits may find themselves ill-suited here."

EDIT: On another note, why the heck are tigers considered Large? I don't think they aren't too much larger than a human, as far as heigh goes.

Also, in the games I've played with Were Tigers (most notably Breath of Fire III), Were Tigers in hybrid form are basically the same size as a human, like the wolf man was in the old movies.

And are brown bears really that much larger than black bears? I would think all the bears would be Medium-Size.

Ah, maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about....

I dont think you should put any restriction on aligments just style. something like what was said ealier about Monk style classes. I like that and dont think a alignment restriction should be imposed since there are a few non-lawful monks out there and we all know there are. The code in it self would act as a stopper for those who wouldn't work to well with us anyway.

Ah, maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about....

I went hunting for a black bear once and they are big. I don't know if D+D bears are suppossed to be like bears in real life, but in Michigan they are definately a different size category than humans.

Don't know about tigers though. I would guess they're pretty big too. Remember that there are different types of large as well; large can be tall or longer. Tigers a probably the latter.

You're talking about real life? Tell me this is a joke...

Ya, I think I will edit the post so that the rules for joining are that you have to follow the order of the code to be a member, instead of making it an alignment restriction. I will just make the code easier for good people to follow than evil ones (though not amazingly so), just like a system of laws ideally favors good people. I need to get around to writing up that code so the order will have stronger legs to stand on. Right now I've posted an idea for a guild, but I need to add a lot before things actually start so that people who want to join will know the structure.

BTW, I think I'm going to come up with some kind of "test" before someone can become a member, like braving some kind of perilous situation. This will only be for RP purposes, but it will give each member a good chance to RP their entrance to the order instead of just saying "Hi, I'm here." Also because it will be very trying, it's a good chance for each player to expose some of their character's personality, as hardship will always bring out strong feelings.

Does anyone know what the actual rule is for posting stuff from books on here? For instance, is it against the law to post a bit from Quintessential Monk?

Black bears are considered Medium Size. Brown bears are considered Large.

Nevermind. The thing that really gets me is that a weretiger in hybrid form is Large. In Breath of Fire III (which is the only thing with weretigers that I've come across), one of your characters can turn into a weretiger. He doesn't change size, he just becomes all feral-like.

Anyone familiar with D&D should know what a beholder is. Everyone in this thread should have a pretty clear idea of what a monk is. And the Prestige Class part is pretty self explanitory.

The merging of these ideas into one frightful conglomeration of a concept was inspired by the Beholder Mage PrC in the Lords of Madness supplement.

LOL...I'm afraid I must have sounded really dumb considering your response. What I was asking was if this was a PrC in existence and if so where I could find it. If you are talking about making one based on the Beholder Mage PrC then by all means, do so.

I really do know what a beholder, a monk, and a PrC are though. ;)

Not particularly. I just wasn't sure what you weren't sure I was talking about. Ergo, I wasn't exactly sure which part to expand on. When in doubt, be a smart-aleck.

As far as I know it doesn't exist yet. The Arcane Hands class ability got me thinking about it, as it specifically mentions they could be used to perform a monk's unarmed strikes. But in retrospect it probably isn't necessary, as a beholder could technically use its tongue, body, or eyestalks for unarmed strikes.

This sounds like fun. I remember the thing in Complete Monk similar to this. It was a page of flavor text telling the story of a monk who had to sit without food or water (except rain) for a certain amount of time before he could train with the monks. In the end the master asked if he had proven himself worthy. When he said yes, the master asked "So you think you can read my mind?" or something like that. The student replied, "No, I have proven it to myself." If we all came up with a narrative like this to tell the tale of our acceptance into the order, it would add a lot of RP value to the guild.

That book is a great source btw, and even though we won't be able to use stuff in it for the IFGW, it will be fun to talk about a lot of the concepts therein.

Well I don't know exactly why they made the weretiger large, but I think it works to the players advantage in combat, so I won't complain. If you think it should be smaller though, maybe you could work on a variation.

You know, I think I'm going to play my anime martial artist over in the CoCo.

EDIT: Never mind...

You have to start off at like level 2 or 3, and you don't actually control your character in combat. You post up his stats along with his strategy, and a pit lord does the battle at home. The biggest reason I never got involved with the CoCo: you don't get to roll the dice. :(

EDIT: I think I've pretty much abandoned the weretiger idea. It would take up 9 levels just to be a weretiger, and it has too many restrictions. That, and weretigers don't go well as monks. The claws / bite do nothing for unarmed attacks (which I think is pretty stupid).

I am, however, working on a Human Monk 6/Fist of Zuoken 9. He looks pretty good so far. He supposed to be like the characters from Dragon Ball Z.

@Cazic-Great! It's good to see you are bringing people into the order and into the IFGW in general. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of character he comes up with.

@gabrion-Enlightened Fist you say? I'm actually a little torn about that class, since most of the monk stats don't overlap with arcan caster ability scores, but if done right it can be a good character. In any case, I'll be happy to see what you come up with. Shino-kutu will be a divine magic user, if I ever get around to finishing him.

@NightScreamer-Ninja yes, samurai no, shinobi yes. Keep in mind a few things though. For now people can't be evil, and I think at least one ninja class had that as a requirement. Make sure if you play a ninja it's one of the no-evil ones (until Cazic convinces me that evil guys are ok). Samurai would be better off somewhere else. The guild is meant for monks, so unless a samurai was a monk as well, they would probably fit best somewhere else. I like the Shinobi you linked and I think it could fit it, but if you want to play it as a character, you'll have to ask the DMs. Character creation only uses official rules unless you have permission form them. Talk to Kingside_Bishop or Orcy the Green Wonder if you want to play the class.

@all-Sorry, but I'm pretty busy this week with writing papers for school and taking exams. I will be posting in my free time, but as soon as I get done with school I will be sure to add some key things to the order. Right now my priorities are 1) Writing a code for members to follow, 2)Working out the details of the guild through the SBG (although KB has indicated that we may be using other rules to build things), and 3) Finishing my own character so he will be more than just a name. Please let me know if I'm forgetting some things I need to focus on.

Finally, I wanted to bring up a discussion about monk stuff! Specifically, what races do people prefer for this class? You can base answers on RP, benefits from min/max, or whatever you want. One I kinda like to play (although it isn't really awesome till you are epic), is the Thri Keen. Multi-Weapon Fighting and a monk's flurry can do some awesome stuff.

Expanded Training
Prerequisite: Monk level 1st.
Benefit: Select one class or prestige class. You may freely take levels in this class or prestige class without facing the normal penalties of multiclassing for monks.
Special: This feat may be taken multiple times. Each time it is taken, it applies to a different class or prestige class.

2)Working out the details of the guild through the SBG (although KB has indicated that we may be using other rules to build things)On this (and I'll post this to the MetaThread as well) :

the system I'm creating isn't so much of a system, as much as it's an interpretation of the SBG. See, the SBG has "stronghold components" -- things like armories, laboratories, and bedrooms, small things like that. There's quite a few of them, and with them you can customize to your heart's content. But, to make certain things simpler, they create a few pre-made "clusters" of stronghold componenents (some examples are the army base, the residential unit, the inn, etc). My intention is to create more clusters... many more, and of much more specific use. These clusters will be of my own creation, and therefore may be posted even though they use the rules in the SBG.

So, those with the SBG will not be penalized, because they'll be using the same rules. But, those without the SBG will have the same opportunites before them, only slightly more vague.

Of course, if the current "clusters" don't meet the needs of any guild, they can post the request, and I or someone else with the SBG will create a cluster for them, then post it for future players to use.

Finally, I wanted to bring up a discussion about monk stuff! Specifically, what races do people prefer for this class? You can base answers on RP, benefits from min/max, or whatever you want. One I kinda like to play (although it isn't really awesome till you are epic), is the Thri Keen. Multi-Weapon Fighting and a monk's flurry can do some awesome stuff.Hmmm... that would be interesting. I'm not a huge fan of the Thri-Keen, though, because I don't like playing insects.

My favorite, and I know it sound boring, is almost always human. It's just easier for me to roleplay a human, and they're quite easy to min/max as well. The bonus skill point, bonus feat, and (practically) free multiclassing make it extremely easy to construct extremely complex builds.

Plus, there's something about the monk... it just seems to me that it should be doing extraordinary stuff with ordinary expectations -- and the human (being the most ordinary of all) fits that to a tee.

This is really underpowered. Look at the ascetic feats in CAdv. Not only to they do something like this, but they offer other benefits. If such a feat were to be worthwhile, it would have to grant overlapping abilities from the two classes/PrCs. Most monk PrCs make it clear that you can continue as a monk though.

I thought i already did that?
i thought the general agreement was that there would be not alignment restrictions, just that the code would be easier for good to follow.

I guess that is pretty much true. I just had it stuck in my mind that the code will be easier for good guys. :D Sorry the front page still list those two requirements, but I will fix it as soon as I have time to write up a code.

That is boring! No, actually the human is, as you said, a great race to play for monks (as with most classes). I know a lot of people who love playing large monks though, for the reach. Any takers?

A lot of people waive the restriction(s). It's probably the most common house rule in 3.x Edition. (taling about monk restrictions)

This has been my experience as well. However, I don't know if such house rules are a good idea for this place. I'm not opposed to it, but the DMs would have to decide.

Just wanted to weigh in on the races issue.

Human-Good for monks. Good for anything. Feats and skills!

Thri Keen-That is an interesting idea, shino. After your comment about making them epic, I looked at the ELH and read the Perfect Mult-Weapon figthing feat. If I understood correctly, the epic thri keen monk would get all of his flurry attacks with each hand, or 20 attacks per round?. Pretty crazy. As far as flavor goes though, I really like it. The desert dwelling insects who practice martial arts...pretty cool.

Large Races-Yes a lot of people play large monks, but they are usually powergamers. Not that that is a bad thing, but the real reason for large is the AoO you get with a 10' reach. With Combat Reflexes and some other cool feats, the large monk is super effective. For you though shino, since you said you were going to play a divine caster monk, a race race wouldn't be worth it if it has a +1 LA. Instead, just cast righteous might on yourself.

I'm gonna have to be boring with KB and say that my personal favorite is human. Of course this changes depending on what kind of monk you want to play (for instance my arcane caster monk will prolly be a race with an INT boost), but humans are pretty universally good. Wait, did I just say that? Give me the Mr. obvious award for the week.

Does anyone on here know if material will be allowed from Dragon Magazines? I may have asked this before, but if so I've forgotten the answer. In an case people should check out Dragon 314 for the master of the winds monk PrCs. They provide a good way for monks to combine with other classes.

I didn't realize at first what you were talking about with these "Shen," I thought you had made a new PrC. I was looking through Dragon 319 though and I finally saw waht you are taling about. A really cool looking PrC for the monk type! Lots of flavor and versatility. Even just having three levels of one of these PrCs could do a great deal to define a character and make them a lot of fun.

Edit: I was also looking at the new feat in that Dragon, Kung Fu Genius. I wondered what people think of the feat. Is it balanced? I'm interested in it since (as I said before) I will be palying an arcane monk with levels of wizard, but it seems really powerful. I guess the ascetic mage lets them use CHA intsead of WIS for AC, which is kinda the same thing as this but for Sorcerers or Bards, but being able to neglect WIS in favor of INT for a monk seems pretty increadible. What do you guys think, is this feat viable? KB, does it stand a chance in the games here?
Shino-Kutu

05-02-05, 12:15 PM
It's good to see that the GMs will be allowing material from Dragon magazines that they deem appropriate.

The Shen, brought up earlier, is a great set of monk PrCs that comes from Dragon. Also, gabrion pointed out the master of the winds PrCs from one of the Dragon Magazines, and I would like to say that if you are a monk fan and have not checked out those PrCs, you should! There are four of them and they all offer something special, like divine or arcane casting progression, or sneak attack, or other things. Really cool for multi-classing monks.

As for Kung Fu Genius, I think it is a really cool feat if the GMs allow it. I don't think it is too bad, since a character who wants to play and arcane caster monk has to focuse on so many different abilities. Monks in general have this problem, and it's hard to make room for a high INT score unless you are allowed to use a feat like Kung Fu Genius. I think it is hard to play an Enlightened Fist that isn't weak unless you use that feat.

Good to see the comments on races and I'd love to hear more opinions, but I also wanted to open up another idea for discussion. How do people feel about VoP with monks? I know a lot of people just don't like the feat at all, and I really hope we won't get angry discussing it, but I figure any "monk's guild" worth its weight in salt should have a good old discussion about VoP.

@Everyone:

I'm really not in material approval mode right now, and Orcy is definitely not either (he's got finals next week). My current efforts are getting the macro-system in place -- that is, the big picture. Currently, I'm working on rules for stronghold construction.

Material and Character Approval are going to be the last things done before the games begin, I imagine. They are of the least consequence to the most people (that is, the GoUE doesn't give a damn about monk PrC's, and this guild doesn't care much about a new evil feat coming out in Dragon).

Essentially, I'm of "wide-focus" right now. We'll etch the details later. But to give you a quick once over -- most materials will be approved... it's overpowered application we're watching out for.

Ideally, anyway.

Don't worry about that KB, I wouldn't expect you to be examaning all the things we are throwing out right now to see if they are ok in the game right now. Keep up the good work with all the stuff you are doing though!

Even if we aren't getting all these ideas approved for the IFGW (or at least not right now), lets all keep in mind that they are still good thinks to bring up in the guild. Anything that has potential for making an interesting (or powerful if that's what you are into ;) ) monk should be posted. Keep the ideas coming!

Anything that has potential for making an interesting (or powerful if that's what you are into ;) ) monk should be posted. Keep the ideas coming!

Powerful you say? Who would come up with character ideas based on how powerful they are? Hmm..

Hey, I found a new feat in Dragon that could really help monks be more powerful! In Dragon 314 there is a feat called Feed the Hungry (or is it angry?) slaad. It lets you temporarily raise one mental stat by four, while droping one of the other mental stats. Since monks will have a lot of things based on WIS and not too much on INT or CHA (unless they are kung fu geniuses), this could be really cool.

For all you out there who wonder how this works into RPing a character, it gets even better! WIS can represent attunement with the metaphysical way of the universe, while INT is the knowledge of particulars. The monk using this to raise WIS and drop INT is transcending normal thought for a period of time, forgetting factual details of mortal life and focussing on self-awareness and a "higher" kind of knowledge. Anyway, I was just really excited when I saw the idea, so I thought I would post it here.

@Cazic-How is that character class coming along?

@All (In response to VoP)-I think this is a good topic to discuss for monks. I think I have the stereotypical view that the VoP is really nice through lower levels, but by 18th level the benefits fall behind the stuff a normal character gets. When characters reach these levels, the amount of money they get from one level to the next is absurd, while the VoP seems to follow a fairly linear track all the way through.

Plus there are some obvious problems if you aren't a caster (like travel and what not), but I think those are minor. Bypassing DR can be a pain though.

Add me to the list. I haven't finished my character yet, but it's in the making. I hope to have it (and a cool intro) done soon.

Hey everyone. Sorry I've been too busy to post much recently, but I have a few things to go over.

1) It's good to see we've had a few people posting back and forth in my absence! Keep the ideas going. This guild is the place to talk about all things monk, so make sure whenever you have an idea, no matter what it is, you post it here.

2) I need to finish my character. I'm getting a little frustrated, since I wasnted to have him done by now, but I need to post him soon...

3) Same goes for the code of the order, or whatever it will be called. I have worked on it a bit and I'm going through a lot of ideas (which is good I guess), and you all should see a product soon.

4) I posted a primative picture of the Monastery Grounds on the front page. It's really basic, but it shows the Monastery istself, the sparring ring (square thing with swords...don't ask), a church or meditation hall, and some "gardens" and groves of trees. The main idea was just to show the set-up of out mountain retreat, so I don't think it is too bad. Like it says in the post, I will be adding more images that show floor plans of the buildings and such, but as busy as I've been, don't hold your breath.

Thanks for keeping up the dialogue all!

@Gabrion-I saw the monk picture you posted in the meta-thread. Super sweat man! You should post it here. I have to say, my character is going to be a monk/cleric/sacred fist, so it really made me think of him.

I'm back after an extended leave, so I thought I would see if anyone is still interested in this guild?

Not sure. I am in the middle of making a monk on the Player Character thread, however. Right now it's my homebrew race, the Asternamia, but at one point I was seriously considering the Petal as a viable race though I seem to have misplaced the file. I know I've posted the pertinent info somewhere on the boards, but we don't seem to have a search function yet despite all the talk of thread pruning and search-implementation that's been going on for months now.

Anyway, I suppose this is a definite maybe.

Gabriel will likely want to join, but if you can get enough members you may want to merge with the Oriental Guild as Monks are big in OA and all.
