Another one that I'm creating because I haven't seen it yet.

If you think wizards should look more or less like my avatar and the greatest icons of magic are Gandalf and Merlin (as portrayed in either Excalibur or The Sword in the Stone movie), and that sorcerers look a little too punk for D&D:

You aren't serious, are you?

You are actually starting a "Wizards are better than Sorcerers" club?

Where do you see this going?

All I can see is that it will become the newest battleground for the Wiz vs. Sor argument. You've already started it off with the "punk kids" insult.

This whole "foundation" (I use quotes here, but they cannot convey the sarcasm intended heavily enough) is just an open invitation to the Flame War of the Week.

Do us all a favor. Contact a WizO and ask them to lock this thread before it starts.

1) I am.
2) That was not my main intent.
3) Old-timers, like me join up and discuss how good gaming used to be before TSR got bought out by a TCG company which got out by a toy company.
4) I will consider revising so as not to start out with an offensive tone.
5) If that's where it goes, I am not averse to it, but I don't think it has to end up there.
6) If I am that offensive, you may report it for moderation. I have no problem with other posters and WizOs point out that I have jsut done a trollish thing.

Elves can be wizards. Elves don't have facial hair.

And really, I prefer innate power over the handy ability to quote Bigby anyway. But that's probably my draconic preferences showing.

I'm rather torn on the "Wizards vs. Sorcerers" thing. I like that Sorcerers don't need to prepare their spells ahead of time, but I don't like their very limited spells known. I suppose that's why I created the Magician, which basically combines a spellbook with spontaneous casting, and with spell points instead of spell slots.

But I digress.

As far as Wizards having beards, depends on the age of the Wizard. I do agree that pretty much all Wizards should be scholarly-looking, with long, flowing robes and respectable hairstyles. The lengths to which people will go to be "different" nowadays can be irritating. I tend to make characters that are rather stereotypical, and stand out amongst a crowd of oddballs. Though my wizards tend to be rather young and clean-shaven.

Wizards can have beards or they can be bald for all Orcy cares. Look at the Thayans of Forgotten Realms, they're wizards and pretty much all of them are bald. The long beard is common in a lot of 'old kindly wizards' moreso than in other places. Should human wizards have beards? Many of them, yes. Primarily because of the human thought process, 'well, that well known wizard had a beard, I should grow one too' and whatnot. Do they NEED beards? No. Look at the Necromancer, most necromancers are depicted without beards, and a very creepy look about them. Evokers are often shown as younger men, perhaps with a more wild look about them. The beard is optional. Diviners and whatnot often times have beards, since they are less likely to be running around all over the world. More time to tend it. Orcy can tell you from experience that a long beard can get caught on things, and it can hurt... So adventuring wizards may be less likely to have the beard. At least, this is how Orcy sees it. Often times people just don't want a beard on their character.

Go for it, I think all men should have beards, but that's probably because my father always had a very thick beard, as did all my uncles, and my father's best friend, and my grandfather, etc... As to my male wizards, I prefer a short cut beard, short cut hair, and a set of clothing that would be practical for adventuring in, with lots of pouches, and not being a mobility restricting dress wannabe, after reading about the Jesuites (don't think I spelled that right) and their black robes I just can't look at the idea of adventuring in robes the same, for official duties however, yeah robes are great, though I think that may just be a hold over from the religious origins of the idea of mages.

I'll join, just for the hell of it. That, and I hate this punk-posier **** they're turning wizards into.

Out of curiosity, do you play Castles & Crusades? You seem like a very "old school" gamer, and they seem to gravitate toward C&C (which has been described by many as being essentially "what AD&D 3rd edition should've been").

And Gandalf, even though he was specifically called a wizard, is really more a divine entity.

Of course, the real reason wizards may have begun to forego beards, is that their HD is only a d4 and thus Stwingers become a dangerous threat.

And even then, his 'spells' looked more like psionic powers. Show me once where Gandalf uses phosphorescent moss to use a light spell, or where he uses bat guano and sulfur to cast a fireball.

And where was his spell book? And what about being able to wield a sword better then most other characters in the books?

Well, spell mastery for the one.

Also, wouldn't this thread be better in the general or classes forums?

Clearly it was cast from his artifact ring.

Not that it matters. Surely you don't think the rules of wizardry are consistent across different worlds? You'd have to be daft to think that. Or a copper/bronze dragon - which is the same thing, really. ;)

No, a bronze dragon is a cross between a tin and copper dragon. :P

And being a copper or bronze dragon is the same as being daft. Which is the similarity I was, in fact, pointing out.

No I haven't tried Castles & Crusades yet. It sounds intriguing, but I still have all my 1e and 2e rulebooks and modules, if I get a real old school craving.

I've heard the 1e and 2e stuff is very compatible for it, possibly moreso than the 3e stuff. Also, Gary Gygax is releasing a series of Castle Greyhawk modules for C&C (under the name Castle Zagyg for copyright reasons). Might be worth looking into, if the new direction of D&D starts to wear you out.

Or if the *new* new direction wears you out, for that matter. It seems like only yestreday I was getting 3rd Ed, and now 4th Ed is right around the corner.
