Hi there everyone. This is the sixth in our polls. There are seven polls that seek responses the the questions you formulated at MetaThread for the period covering the Christmas 2004 to January 2005 period. Polls 6 & 7 are additional questions that need to be asked before writing the rules.

The five threads are:

1. Portal Concepts for the Inter-Foundation Games
2. PC Concepts
3. Frameworks for Overarching Rules
4. Black Operations
5. Newcomers, Recruits and Managing Level Variation
6. Roles, Hierarchies and In-Game Promotion Opportunities
7. Game Rewards & Penalties

This Poll is Roles, Hierarchies, and In-Game Promotion Opportunities for the Inter-Foundation Games.

Feel free to post comments onto the thread, and don't forget to PM or post us your URLs for your top five or so MetaThread Posts. Those URLs are a chance for you to tell us what is most important for you in the Inter-Foundation Games.

I like the role option, but you should earn it by doing something inportant for your foundation. And Majordomo should DEFINENTLY be added to the roles avaliable list... is there a list..... is there Guild House..... Am I typing... Do I type there for I am.... these questions should also be addresed as a matter of extrem inportance.

Ranks? Arent those uh... not allowed by the rules of this board. And the very reason the DMs foundation was shutdown.

I would vote "none of the above" because of the likelihood of some control freak coming along and ruining everyone's fun. No one should be recognized as better or above another.

Yet, this is ironic. I believe the Guild Wars were originally intended to be a competition between guilds. But it looks to me that people cannot participate in healthy competition without causing the whole thing to go downhill. Perhaps we need another poll for "What do you want the Guild Wars to be?"

The DMs foundation got shut down because:

1. It was almost constantly flamey. It got nasty. But it was because people couldn't accept differences of opinion.
2. Someone said "we're done here" so Cat obliged

It was the member lists of the old foundations is where you can't rank order the real people (c.f. game concepts) with numbers.

Roles and hierarchies in a game are fine. If you don't have them - you don't have kings, queens, and a kagillion other game ideas.

Control freaks - are people who are scared of uncertainty. They think that there is "a way" of doing things that is "right" and don't accept differences of opinion.

'Letting go' is about accepting that you win some you lose some and that it doesn't matter that much in the end.

'Choosing your battles' is the converse. When there really is a really worthy reason for fighting.

If you get upset because the game isn't exactly as you would like it - you're going to be upset forever. No game has everythink you would like.

However, it hopefully has a number of features that you do like, and I suggest that you focus on those.

As to the comment about "someone coming in and wrecking it by trying to take over" that's what the GMs are for and that's what DR posting is about. It's your protection.

Shouldn't some of these be up to the guilds themself?

I'd have a hard time wondering how Harpers would have more then two ranks, how the Forest Dwellers foundation would have any or how the CoA wouldn't?

And if we allow feudalism, wouldn't it be up to the guild leader as who controlls the lands? Maby the assassins guild doesn't want to give indivudals land and would rather have a "Commonwealth" Aka "Absolute monarcy." On the other hand a Merchant foundation might want each individual member to have his/her own marketplace/store/caravan/trade route and wouldn't want to make it different inbetween members.

Just my opinion.

and yes -

They're all valid points, and I suspect each Guild will work its own way forwards.

In one sense, we don't need PCs to access the roles proposed, because, you'll face people of different rank anyway, through various 'exposures' (e.g. NPC encounters, Divine Ranks posts, etc).

But Frosty, you made a good King. And, I guess what I'm saying is, that I'd like to share the opportunities around with PCs. I'd be bored if I was in control of all the groovy things like the ThroneWards.

To respond to Dyne's concern in a different way - we have Chosenses of Mystra running around, and Enclaves of this and that. But, perhaps some posters would like to end up, themselves, becoming something like a ThroneWard.

*sighs*

In any case - the poll may speak.

I believe we misunderstand ourselves. So your asking if we want "ranks/roles" on a central-level such as:

As I was once the High King, the polls are asking if we want Member X to beable to become a Duke of such and become the Grand Knight of the Kingdom.

This would be a little different then what I thought it was beacuse now all guilds would have to recognize a lord as a lord for that is what he is. But my only question is how or who do we determine what we start off as and how we rise up in the ranks?

Hi there Frosty

But my only question is how or who do we determine what we start off as and how we rise up in the ranks?

Good question, my noble friend.

One idea I've had is that the roles are very structured - and you need to ascend one by one, and in an order clearly defined by the rules.

Another idea (this one's the 'more undefined' model) - it's all about who you grass up, who you help, your merit, when and who your in-game mates are. In this second model, if the King takes a shine to you - you may end up getting fast-tracked into a high-level rank (much like happens in real life).

In between the two are a great many options. I think we need to workshop this one a bit more. :)

Both sound good to me. The second one sounds a little better for the only reason that I will be running for King again, even if only a temporary position at best. I went unopposed last game :evillaugh however I'd be willing to step aside for anyone that wished to step up to the task. Of course you would have to sign a god-bound contract to "treat me well" making sure you listen to me and let me in on things.

If Sil, it comes down to you picking from a bunch of kings I suggest somone like our friend Bait who would create intricate webs and excitment.

Bait's very cool and we like him a lot. He's been around forever and he's a good person (as are you good Frosty).

any Harper is not good to my charaters and will do things to them. as for your female wizard it's seems that you have a nice postion in the hef, would you be willing to step down and let another elf run the guild? I don't think so, and your charater likes and craves the power she has over the other elves.
maybe you should have a round table talk and let the elves make decsions that way. Frosty I have my eye on you.

Redhase, you have had your eyes on me ever since you first saw me and why wouldn't you? Who isn't attracted to a halfling bard such as myself ;).

Anyways our only problem with crowning our almightypuppet King bait is that hes said he doesn't want to really play this game in a major way. However, we might convince him otherwise.
