Take the boots off halflings foundation [Archive] - Wizards Community

I looked back through the last seven pages of threads and didn't see anything like this foundation I am proposing already in existence. To me, that makes it fair game.

I propose a foundation for those who are offended by part of the D&D 3.x aesthetic, booted halflings. Halflings have hairy feet with soles tougher than shoe leather. They are rural and sedentary. They are not mini-elfs with a nomadic culture.

Most importantly, they go barefoot to show off their hairy feet and improve their stealth skills.

So, if you agree with me add:
Take the boots off halflings foundation (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=790353) to your sig.

You are damn correct good poster!

"Halflings are basically hard-working, orderly and peaceful citizens of communities similar to humans - although thier villages usually contain many burrow homes as well as surface cottages."

The picture in my Monster Manual even shows them barefoot with furry feet! We're playing a game that was inspired by Tolkien, they'll just have to accept that.

Boots, bah. What respectable Hobbit would wear boots?

You make a strong point, but

"Halflings are basically hard-working, orderly and peaceful citizens of communities similar to humans - although thier villages usually contain many burrow homes as well as surface cottages."
Thats not what the MM1 says.
I quote:
"They might be reliable, hard-working citizens, or thieves just waiting for their big chance."

The picture in my Monster Manual even shows them barefoot with furry feet!
What version MM do you have? I am looking at the 3.5 right now and the Halfling shown here has shoes on. Their not boots, but they aren't barfoot.

We're playing a game that was inspired by Tolkien, they'll just have to accept that.

True that, but Halflings aren't Hobbits.

Stationary Halfling communities are as you say “Hobbit-ish,” but so are Kender communities from the Dragonlance books. Most Halflings (and Kenders) move around a lot. They are stricken by “Wander-Lust” and this, and other things, is where they differ greatly from Hobbits. Hobbits from birth to death love to stay in one place. Halflings (and Kender) normally can’t stand this at younger ages. It isn’t till old age that they feel they must settle down.

Also Hobbits dont steal. Halflings do.

I'd guess, this one (http://www.nobleknight.com/imagepage.asp?image=TSR2009.jpeg&name=Monster%20Manual%20(1st%20Cover)).

I'm guessing you're not joining us. Cool. Different salves for different wounds and all that.

Oh dont get me wrong. Halflings do have furry feet, harder then leather feet, and they do go barefoot a lot, but I am here to represent the otehr side of the fence.
[EDIT] and becuase Halflings and Hobbits aren't the same. They are simmilar, but not the same.

I'm detecting a theme. You might want to compile these guilds into one single guild: The "Enforce Classical Archetypes/Stereotypes" foundation. ECA/SF. :)

Now that's a guild I'd be willing to join. D&D just isn't right without its share of stereotypes and Drizzt clones.

A character's footwear is a RP decision to be made by the individual player.

Are you seriously proposing that a player who chooses to put boots on their character is somehow playing the game wrong?

This is the second of your little "foundations" I've posted in, and they both seemed to be aimed at you telling everyone else how to play their game.

Halfling footwear and spellcaster facial hair are style choices and not supported by any rules.

With all due respect, butt out and let people play the game the way they want.

Starting these "foundations" of yours is just an open casting call for every troll and flamer on the boards. Do us all a favor and don't encourage that type of behavior.

1) Totally. I wish to promote the barefoot halfling RP decision.
2) Not in the least. I am trying to promote the way I feel better with. Nobdy's right. Nobody's wrong. Everyone just is.
3) That was not my intent. I apologize if it is percieved that way.
4) Totally true, which is why I am promoting my views on them. Those that agree are welcome to join. Those that don't have an entire rest of the big internet to play in.
5) I do and shall. I'm trying to promote one view. There are others. I have no problem with that. Diversity makes the world richer.
You are more than welcome to start a kill-all-Tolkein-influence foundation or a casters-must-have-piercings-and-spiky-hair foundation. I, if coming across such a foundation, would take a look at it and opt not to join or even post to the foundation thread.
6) Your tone actually feels more incendiary than mine to me, but I am not an intentional troll. If you feel these threads can only be flame-bait report them to the WizOs.

I guess it is a theme, but these two are the only archetypes I really care about preserving and promoting. Sword-wielding clerics and surface drow are tolerable, if not wonderful. Calling them rogues instead of thieves is acceptable. I can almost adapt to the modern age, but mini-elves and punk wizards are not my cup of tea.

Edit: I see I was mistaken in the basic premise of my post, so I have removed it.

I could be wrong here, but I got the impression that the Guild House was a place for the discussion of various builds, items, etc. both published and homebrew, in relation to a certain topic. A little freeform roleplaying happens on the side.

Not necessarily. People can start a guild about virtually anything, as long as it doesn't violate the CoC. It just happens that the guilds which focus on specific builds, items, feats, etc. tend to last quite a bit longer. They usually have more to talk about, and people seem to care more about coming up with a new PrC than discussing whether or not halflings should wear boots.

*a cleanshaven hafling wearing elevator boots walks over to Khyron, a spellbook at his side*
So, something wrong with a hafling wearing elevator boots and not having a beard? Huh?!? WELL PUNK!!!!!

Halflings are hobbits. The only reason they're not called as such is because the Tolkien foundation made threats once upon a time. This change into mini-elves is pretty craptastic, because halflings don't taste very good.

And if halflings wear shoes of any sort it should be sandals or geta.

"some one say kender's" a group goes by the ones there. They go and one says to the others, "boots only if we cabn borrow them, others shoes what we can borrow. The ground feel good under one's feet."

"An elf bane ohh," they all go by Tenzhi, look Tenzi over some are close to tenzhi, in arms reach.
