| DanielTheHalfling07-15-03, 08:55 PM | Well met, good halflings, if you wish to join this hobbit-halfling foundation and discuss halfling matters while eating anything, you are welcome to do so. Membership starts now. I'm #1. Whomsoever joins next will be #2, and so on. And remember that according to the new rules, (3.5 Foundations Handbook, page 22, chapter 2 "Making people join foundations") being number 2 or 20 has no special meaning. It's just that someone else joined before you and has possibly (I hopehttp://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/Smilies/dannysad.txt) discussed some more times before you. And, further to the point, if you join, you have to discuss. It's not a matter of a personal whim. It's on the rules. Look at the pages 63 throuugh 70, chapter 4, "What the hell are foundations good for" and you'll see that i'm right. That's it for rules. With that in mind, click on "post reply", and prepare yourself to be another halfling. (Don't feel very special. | Silmarien Aldalome07-15-03, 09:16 PM | Well Done! May I congratulate you on your leap of faith. ...ever do the Holbytlan show Strength of both Body and Will beyond that of Mortals....for Vanity is not a Holbytlan Bane - Vanity is the Bane of Men.. OK - Daniel - lead us in discussion - Great Thread Keeper - what would you like discussed first  Some suggestions: Halfling Lore - I'd love to see stuff discussed about their Great Will and Constitutions. I'd like to see you develop some new rules about Ability Adjustments. I think CORE rules have just got it plain wrong. ..and the Battle Wages outside the Gates of The Dark Lord - we spied the Holbytlan Daniel there - he is needed - Deepwood does Battle with the Dark Lord nigh 100 elles from the Gates! Cheers Silmarien |
| Thelonius07-15-03, 11:12 PM | I was hoping someone would start this foundation officially. I play a stereotypical halfling rogue: Telligar Underbough, "Telli", at your service. 4th level rogue with a ring of invisibility... you gotta love that! I would like to get to know how I can be more comfortable in my masterwork studded leather. It's just plain itchy in all the wrong places, if you get my drift...;) |
| JoyLynn07-16-03, 12:30 AM | YES !!! :cloud9: :cloud9:   :bounce: :bounce: :D :D I am in. But am I #3 or #4 ? Did Silmarien join? Please let us know dear leaders. I played Lidda in a campaign last school year, she is the prototype character from the boxed set. (I know there is another name for that but I can't spell it and my spell checker doesn't understand me either.) I will be starting a new game this Thursday with a halfling rouge - Velvet - lvl 1. I am really looking forward to that. |

| L33t Angel07-16-03, 04:34 AM | Wait! Wait! Are we too late?!?!?! ::A tiny colorful figure runs into the room, his body dangling with pouches, a walking stick of most unusual design clasped in his hand:: Hello fellow, Halflings! I would like to offer the services of myself and my familiar Geoffrey, the weasel. Say hello Geoffrey! Skrit! Geoffrey is shy. he used to be a powerful dragon you know. But then we were attacked by this purple worm and he was forced to assume human form or a wizard would feed me to the worm, which would certainly be a very interesting encounter of course but then I wouldn't be able to join this neat foundation. Anyways, of course I broke out of the wizards grasp and smote the purple worm all by myself! My that's a fun word, smote? I smote the worm! I smote the vile worm! Makes me want to give up sorcering and become a Paladin. Ah, Sir e'Leetimus Angelicus, master Knight of the Rose. I'd have a horse, and Geoffrey would get the nicest weasel wheel. And maybe I could save princesses and... wow, now THIS is a nice list. "DanieltheHalfling, Silmarien Aldalome, Thelonius,Joylynn" my these people sound interestign I wonder who they are. Oh wait, is this YOUR list? Oh, my, I'm sorry Mr....? DanieltheHalfling? Why yes, I'm sorry Mr. DanieltheHalfling, you must have dropped this list and i of course was returning it to you before you lost it. You must be more careful, next time. Ahem cough, cough, back to my point. I'm Leet Angel the most powerful Kender Sorceror on Krynn and I'd like to join your establishment. First REAL question: Who here REALLY hates my race? I mean I don't but lots of people do, I don't know why. Some people say we're nuisances but in truth we just know that everyone else should lighten up. |

| DanielTheHalfling07-16-03, 11:00 AM | This foundation will grow on its own pace http://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/Smilies/dannysmirk.txt. We will discuss interesting halfling topics (I know that it's redundant) and more and more halflings will come here and join us. But, for the while I suggest that we discuss if halflings are affected by tobacco at all or not, for they appear to smoke a lot and not die for it. I think that they are inmune to death by smoking. What do the other halflings think. |
| DanielTheHalfling07-16-03, 11:35 AM | I'm not the only leader. I propose a voting to determinate who's my number #2 or "The Orcy" (leader without being the foundation starter). Candidates are: Silmarien Leet Angel JoyLynn Thelonius You can only vote once. |
| JoyLynn07-16-03, 01:48 PM | Please, I must bow out of the running. I am very much a supporter, but when school starts in in the fall I am afraid I will not be able to give the boards the attention I do now on summer break. But on a happier note, :D :D has every one seen this web site? http://myth-drannor.net/DlabraddathNet/z-Beluir/Main.htm ugggg I had to cut and paste that. I don't know how to do links. It was a link from the old boards. I really like the patheon of minor gods listed to complement Yondalla. Velvet is a follower of Brandobaris. My DM has seen the website and has agreed to let me use this pantheon. He has hinted Velvet might met her god some time in the distane future. Lidda is very happy to meet Leet Angle. She met a pisonic tinker gnome from Kender whose starjammer crashed on her world. The gnome was left behind when the others rebuilt the ship and took off. The gnome always acted like she was a Kleptomaniac and now she understands why. |
| krunzi07-16-03, 04:01 PM | kru here, set me on the members list. halfling paladin of arvoreen (or well i am if i ever get to play again). |
| L33t Angel07-16-03, 05:37 PM | On Halflings and Tobacco: Hm, the only mention of Halflings prodigiously smoking the pipe-weed is of course, Tolkien's works. Me? I never touch the stuff. Fogs the lungs, makes one cough, have you ever coughed with your hand in a minotaur's pocket? Granted, I didn't know it was the minotaur's pocket, I though it was my pocket, but he didn't see it that way. I do remember reading of the Halfling War-Pipe a brilliant invention that mixes battle and smoking. Perhaps one could se it to make a smoke screen in battle. I must humbly take myself off the running for Orcy. When the Wanderlust starts up who knows how long I'll be awa. Not to mention all of my frequent stays at the fine city jail. Just wouldn't be practical you see. Ooooh, are you really a halfling Paladin, Kru?!?! Oooooh, what's it like being a Paladin? Do you get to ride on a horse? Do you slay dragons? Do you save damsels in distress? Now that I think of it I really wouldn't like to be a Paladin. Too many rules, you see. I'm sorry though. If you ever need some magic spells I've got ya' covered. I've got.. uh, Prestidigitation, and Ventriloquism, and Magic Missile... Wanna see my spell components? |
| JoyLynn07-16-03, 08:05 PM | Krunzi, it is very nice to meet you. Are you a very unusual wandering palidin or are you part of a particular city or settlement? |
| DanielTheHalfling07-17-03, 08:27 AM | Welcome, Krunzi, to the smallest foundation on the "Races" boards. I played a halfling paladin once, but he was locked up in a coffin at the local inn's basement and slain by a vampiress with a spear while he was trying to rescue the inn-keeper. (Not very lucky, he was http://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/Smilies/dannysad.txt) |
| Valthran07-17-03, 02:19 PM | Happy I am to join your fine foundation. As a rogue/cleric my lifestyle is as much a calling as just plain fun, So I do tend to travel frequently but I will be pleased to stop in when I am in town. A smoke?..no thank-you..but you wouldn't happen to have any marbles??..I have a small collection you know..I also like cat figurines...that reminds me of the time Brandobaris borrowed some of Nobanion's mane...yes I'm sure the story would go much better with some ale.. |
| Ankhalab07-17-03, 09:27 PM | I don't wanna join your foundation but for the record, halflings rule! |

| Ouroboros07-18-03, 02:21 PM | So the hobbits have there own land now. Need some help digging youre holes. We dwarves are jolly to help:) Good luck and me youre bellies be ever full;) |
| Imelda07-18-03, 03:05 PM | I want in!! I want in!! Allow me to introduce myself. I am Imelda Barefoot and I am a HERO!! Yup, that's right. I'm a hero. I saved the princess and chased the Troll out of the mines and won many amazing battles. (okay, there was that one time that I shot the princess in the butt with my crossbow and the whole 'being eaten by the shape-shifting trunk' thing, but that's all beside the point...and besides, I blame those misadventures on the dwarf) I have many tales to tell of my adventures for any who are willing to sit and listen. I always enjoy sharing my stories (contrary to what that annoying elf, Atreu, might say, it's not bragging), almost as much as I enjoy a good meal. Boy, it's so nice to be among other halfings. So much of my time is spent trying to avoid being stepped on by those clumsy big people. I think I'll rest here for a bit before I get back to leading my army (okay, it's the king's army, but I'm the only one who knows where we're going so technically I am leading them) against the evil sorcerer. Did I mention that I saved the king? Yup, only took me one try to pick the lock on his cell. I know what you're thinking and the answer is 'no.' I'm not a thief. I'm a locksmith. See, says it right here on my card: "Imelda Barefoot, Expert Locksmith....NOT A THIEF!" Isn't it about time for afternoon tea? |
| Thelonius07-18-03, 11:58 PM | Well met Imelda! Telli here... liberator of oppressed wallets. I try to eliminate the greed of the world. <steps up on soap box> The hoarding of wealth and keeping it from genuine social interaction by locking it in a wallet is just greedy, and greed must be stamped out for the sake of the soul of the greedy! <steps back down> Sit and have a pint, we love to hear stories of the misadventures of the tall. I know exactly what you mean about the elves and dwarves misinterpretting motives. They're just too tall for their own good. Why, we were clearing out this island that was infested with the undead... I had to take point of course, since the clumsy tallies kept tripping over wires and falling into pits and such... but we came across a group of skeletons. Fearsome they were, and my silly elven friend tried to attack it with a scimitar. Well, the blade just went through the critters ribs! So the elf drops his scimitar and grabs a mace which my lovely halfling cleric cohert presented for his assistance and proceded to pummel the skeletons to bits. And then he has the gall to get mad at me for simply picking up his dropped sword!! He left it on the floor and I couldn't have him tripping over it, now, could I?? It was a pretty little blade of masterwork quality... but I was only putting it in a safe place to keep it from harm. Boy they do get touchy about things like that... for some reason they won't leave me alone in a room with a chest... but I don't mind, I'm a social guy and do appreciate the company. Of course I have a ring of invisibility if I need a little privacy :) |
| krunzi07-19-03, 08:38 AM | atm. im andering paladin, the thing about being in a settlement or a member of a garison dont appeal to me much. its good being paladin, i see why you think theres too many rules, but it is really needed in order to keep off corruption and the likes. and besides the rules are strict yes, but its pretty much how you look on it, being a paladin mean you shouldnt steal, shouldnt kill innocents, follow your deity and try to uphold the law. pretty much what the common halfling does. one thing that i think is important is that while we should defend the halflings with our lives, we should not sacrifice ourselves nearly right after our training, trying to save a "damsel in distress" from a dragon that can clearly not be slain by us (not like those silly torm paladins :nonono: ) defend with our lives if needed, but not jump right into the maw of the monster just because were paladins. being realistic. but ofcourse magic spells are allways needed, no matter how much faith we have in arvoreen, yondalla, brandobaris or whover we believe in, some backup spells can allways be used ;) |
| Imelda07-19-03, 12:04 PM | Oh, yes, Thelonius, big people are forever setting off traps. My princess, Aloren, is always bumbling forth when she should be letting me go first to check. Which is how she found herself stepping on a trap set with many arrows and giant logs. Of course I had to go in and save her. The whole thing would've been much easier if she'd just listened to me and gone the long way around, but she has no patience. You can't expect to go running all willy-nilly into orc territory without coming across any trouble. Even the youngest halfling babe knows that. But the tallies won't listen, they seem to think that because they tower over us in size that they also tower over us in mental power. (shakes her head) Sometimes I think it would be best to just be done with them and find myself some other halflings to wander with. But the lure of the bulging pouches that humans are forever wearing on their belts is too much for me. I find that being small has it's advantages as they pay no more mind to me than they would a child and I can easily lighten their loads. Besides, though Aloren has a good heart, her head leaves much to be lacking. I honestly don't think she'd survive without me to watch over her. :fight!: Manys the time I've had to run in and save her from evil creatures that she's fighting. Never send a human or a dwarf to do a halfling's job. Like the battle with the orcs mentioned in my signature. But I'll tell that tale another time for all this talking has made me hungry. |
| Thelonius07-19-03, 04:25 PM | a friend of mine showed me a Dragon magazine article with some interesting feats for halflings. Unfortunately I didn't have much time to go ever them very thoroughly. one was Low Blow, which if I remember correctly lets you move into the space of a large creature and strike a low blow which denies the opponent their Dex (i.e. sneak attack) and the other was Swarm, which if I remember correctly gives you an attack bonus when fighting with others who also have swarm. The bonus (I think) is equal to the number of people swarming. Has anyone used these before and are they worth the use of the feat slot? Swarm is very tempting since my party consists of: Halfling Rogue (your's truely) Halfling Sorcerer Halfling Cleric (of Kord, no less!) Gnome Barbarian Gnome Druid ... and two elven rangers of little consequence so swarm would seem to have the potential for a +5 attack bonus in our group. Also, if anyone could post the specifics of those feats it would be great! From what I remember, Low Blow had a Dodge and Mobility prereq. but I can't remember what the prereq's for Swarm were. |
| krunzi07-19-03, 07:34 PM | i can tell you that those feats are in the savage species book.. or was it the races fo faerun one.. dunno, one of those 2. the swarming feat is one of he new preffered tactics among the halfling millitias (i shouldn't really be telling you this on the public boards ;) ) especialy amongst the umm.. how can you say it... the part of the militia that care for the study of anatomi :smirk: |
| Mage of Sembia07-19-03, 10:20 PM | Just a suggestion, since halflings like throwing so much (They get a bonus for it) why doesn't someone design a throwing game? |
| krunzi07-20-03, 06:19 AM | it shouldnt be that hard, just do it like darts or something, maybe itll say something in the quintessential halfling :) |
| Silmarien Aldalome07-20-03, 11:11 AM | Originally posted by Thelonius a friend of mine showed me a Dragon magazine article with some interesting feats for halflings. There's got to be a whole stack of these sort of things that give specialisations for Halflings. I'd like to see the equivalent stabbing weapon. and the other was Swarm, which if I remember correctly gives you an attack bonus when fighting with others who also have swarm. The bonus (I think) is equal to the number of people swarming. This feat has a collective focus. I suspect there could be a heap of collective-focus feats (CFFs) for Halflings. I haven't used them because I hadn't thought of them. They are great additions - they add dimensions to halfling characters - and will remember these ideas. thanx. [quote]Swarm is very tempting since my party consists of: Halfling Rogue (your's truely) Halfling Sorcerer Halfling Cleric (of Kord, no less!) | JoyLynn07-21-03, 12:14 AM | (In the splat book, Sword and Fist, there is a set of halfling skip stones. I don't have that book, yet. And I don't have the exact specs for it. I do remember that you can choose a first and second target for each throw. In other words, you skip the stone off the first target and can hit a second one as well. The damage is small but a think it is regular damage to both not subdual. It should be just the thing to distract mages or others.) I have a set of skip stones on order at the local smithey. It's owned by a rather cute halfling, by the way. So how about a game where you practice that. The more targets you can hit, the more points you can make. The skip stones aren't just any stones they are polished and balanced. So what if the targets were a little padded, to protect the stones from chipping and breaking. I know it would make it harder to bounce the stones, but that would just force you to try harder. Like running with ankle weights in practice, but not wearing them on the day of the race. By the way, I have a very pretty bottle of wine here I "picked up" at the store next to the smithy, any one want a glass? |
| L33t Angel07-21-03, 12:22 AM | A glass, why yes! I'd love a glass. If only I have a wine glass. Oh, here's one! i wonder where this came from. What's this engraved onto it, Netheril the Archmagus? That's odd. That's not how you spell l33t. Oh well. Pour me a glass. A fun game is of course the ol' Hoopak toss. See, this is how you play. First you shoot a stone from the sling atop your hoopak and hit a target. The target causes a ball to fall which you have to hit with another stone. And then.. well usually by that point I've misplaced my sling stone pile but luckily someone else has one and we start over from the beginning! |
| Valthran07-21-03, 02:12 PM | Swarm fighting, low blow and improved low blow are all in Races of Faerun. I haven't used low blow because as a rogue/cleric I don't have the feat slots to spare for the Pre req's There are no other small characters in my party so Swarm fighting won't help me but.... This feat allows up to 4 characters of small size to occupy the same 5ft space. Now imagine 4 halfling rogues in flanking positions on each side of a doorway with Four Breachgnomes in front of the doorway to provide a stopper. If you add diagonals you could have another 8 gnomes. Thats 8 sneak attacking rogues and a lot of gnomes all concentrated on the same 5ft square through doorway. Can anyone say the word 'meat grinder' Does anyone here use skip rocks and the spell magic stone together?? I tried a thread about this and haven't received much of a response. If I have time I will come back later to share a tale... |
| Valthran07-21-03, 06:43 PM | From Races of Faerun, which is WoTC material not splat book Low blow pre req's: Dodge, mobility, base attack 4+ Skip stone: 1d3, range 10, allows skip to adjacent target within 5ft of primary target at -2 of attack bonus to hit primary target. Drawing skip rocks to throw is a free action. Halfling skip rocks and halfling warsling are halfling racial weapons counted as exotic in 3.0 but I think should be simple weapons for halflings in 3.5. At least skip rocks should be as rock throwing and skipping rocks are a racial past time after all. ----------- I was just traveling with some companions near the Lake of Steam. I met this poor unfortunate gentleman who apparently had lost some property. He claimed a Merchant had taken the object but no one would believe him. Well feeling sorry for the Gentleman I offered to take a look. Wouldn't you know it but the Merchant did have the item in question plus some beautiful carvings, some even of cats. It was well hidden and he also had these inconvenient traps around that really weren't safe in a house with children (he had 5, I believe). So for the sake of the children I dismantled the traps, because those locks he had certainly wouldn't have kept a halfling child out. Anyways, I returned the item to the Gentleman who offered me a most generous reward. Just after this there was a commotion as the Merchant, a paladin and the town guards arrived at the Inn. I moved out of the way to watch the excitement. Would you believe that the item never belonged to the Gentleman in the first place. At least thats what the paladin got out of him after casting some sort of truth spell or something. Then things really got confusing when the gentleman tried to get away. Well with all of the yelling, hitting and large feet stomping around I felt it was best to move to a different Inn to have a drink and admire my new cat figurine. Talk to you all later.. |
| Ouroboros07-22-03, 02:38 PM | Well the halflings are welcome in the dwarven mines (we need to let the deep halflings feel welcome on the board eh;) ) |
| Tenzhi07-22-03, 02:45 PM | My only question is, exactly what is a Ling and why did it choose to breed with humans (or elves, as seems to be the case with Silmarien, who, apparently, is half elf and half ling...)? |
| Ouroboros07-22-03, 02:50 PM | probaly kendar:smirk: |
| krunzi07-22-03, 05:11 PM | ahaaa!! after reading up on these posts again (gone for a few days) i now remember the swarm feat (sticky mind had to dig it out :cookie: ) ok, the feat gives you +1 to hit for each other character with the swarm feat attacking the enemy, up to your max dex bonus. thats not THAT good, but since we generelly have high dexes, its till pretty good. also i cant remember if it was swarm or something else that made small (or was it tiny) characters able to stand on the same spot (ie 4 halflings in 1 5 foot field) dont take my word on this one since im not sure, dont have the book myself so i cant be 100% sure. :smirk: |
| Valthran07-22-03, 05:26 PM | Yes as I mentioned above swarm figthing will let up to 4 small characters occupy the same 5ft square and still fight effectively. Potentially very effective if you have a narrow 5ft corridor you are trying to defend or an ability to mass a large number of small characters aroung a narrow spot like a doorway. |

| Valthran07-23-03, 03:34 PM | Swarm fighting gives a whole new meaning to strength in numbers. As I mentioned previously, at least in Forgotten Realms halfling skip rocks and Halfling warsling are both exotic weapons that are halfling Racial weapons. The halfling warsling even has its own prestige class the Warsling Sniper. Based on the 3.5 precedent of Racial weapons (example: dwarven waraxe exotic weapon is treated as a martial weapon for dwarves) it makes sence to me that the halfling skip rock should be a simple weapon for halflings. At least this should be true in worlds such as the Forgotten Realms where skip rocks are known to exist. What do the rest of you think |
| krunzi07-24-03, 06:11 AM | sounds resonable valthran. and yeah teh swarm feat gives a whole enw meaning to the word swarm fighting. 4 hallings on 1 5 ft sqare is dangerous :P omg, just made me think, halflings make the best tower shield wall, they can cover all sides except 1 with halfling tower shields, hmm, dont have the exact stats and stuffs, but it sounds like it would work jest fine :smirk: |
| Ojuice500107-24-03, 09:59 AM | Well, I like halflings. First, they know how to enjoy life...much better than the workaholic dwarves, the existentialist elves, or the exploratory humans. And they are definitely on a par with the other core races; it's cool how they survive through selective unobtrusiveness and subtle strategizing, just like a true adventurer should. They were kind of underpowered in 2E, but no more. |
| prettysilent07-24-03, 12:15 PM | Hello all Anyone have the stats for the Warsling got a strong feeling Garret the halfling Ranger may like to pick one up |
| Stoutfingers07-24-03, 02:07 PM | count me in! Halflings rule the world...and what about second breakfast??? |
| Valthran07-24-03, 02:18 PM | From Races of Faerun: Halfling Warsling: small exotic weapon 1d6 if using skip rocks for ammunition, crit x4, increment 50ft. Will let you use skip rocks skipping ability. |
| DanielTheHalfling07-24-03, 06:30 PM | Ah! Welcome to this foundation! You've come to the right place, oh yes you have, there are some good foundations 'round 'ere, pretty decent, but none as small as ours! Come in! Come in! originally posted by stoutfinger: What about second breakfast? I'm halfligishly hungry. Oh, o 'course we have it second breakfast! Here, it's made of trail rations and some foundation meal (good). *Gives him that.* But I 'pose ya ain't here just fer eatin', are you? This foundation be here to halfingishly do lots of halfling things. |
| Valthran07-24-03, 07:15 PM | Personally I prefer anywhere from 4 to 6 meals per day. Nothing quite like a well prepared meal. At one time I was collecting recipes of some of the nicer meals I ran across during my travels. I had collected quite a number when one day I was getting the recipe for a great dumpling stew when this crazy Inn keeper and his half-orc bouncer attacked me with clubs and started calling for the city guard. Now it was hardly my fault that he kept his best family recipes locked up with the Inns cash and other valuables, but they just wouldn't listen to reason. Thank-fully my devotion to Brandobaris's interest in travel makes me hard to hold on to or that bouncer would have turned me into a pretzel. Even so I ended up having to jump out a window into the river and hide in some rushes down stream...have I mentioned how much I hate water. Anyways as a result all my recipes were ruined. Marbles are much safer and harder to destroy. They do tend to get lost though which reminds me of the time I found out just how useful dropped marble can be......but my mouth is getting dry.....and I believe I heard someone mention second breakfast.. |
| DanielTheHalfling07-24-03, 09:36 PM | Aye, Valthran, quite right you are!http://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/Smilies/dannybiggrin.txt Here's some second breakfast! *tosses it.* Now, will you have some breakfast or will we fake to be discussing interesting topics? |
| Valthran07-25-03, 04:58 PM | Sorry I would love to stay and chat but that paladin I mentioned before appears to be looking for the individual who obtained the Gentleman's supposed property from that merchant. Sorry to be vague but I try not to be a name dropper. So I have decided to take a small vacation in the country...look up some old friends...do some fishing......anyways do you hear that clanking sound.....I'll see you later. |
| JoyLynn07-28-03, 05:59 PM | I would love to tell you all of my new but verrrry slow moving new adventure, but my wonderful red headed husband has just suggested we should be extravagant and go eat out. So I will bump the foundation back to the top so I can find it easier when I come back. If you'll are lucky, maybe I will bring you back a snack when I return. :smirk: :D |
| Valthran07-28-03, 06:25 PM | Hi everyone I'm back again. Did you ever stop to consider how hard it is to walk on a log wearing plate armour? I have always wondered, and from the splash that paladin made back in the swamp a couple of days ago it must be harder than you think. I didn't think Paladins were suppose to use that kind of language. I would have stayed to help the poor son but there were trolls lurking about and I figured troll extermination was more a paladins job than mine. Looking at my new 3.5 players hand book I have made a number of interesting discoveries: 1) Rogues now are proficient in all simple weapons 2) the long spear is now a simple reach weapon which, as of the new 3.5 weapons rules, in a size usable by halflings. My rogue can now use a simple reach weapon for sneak attacks. 3)Feinting only applies to melee attacks (rules only said attack in 3.0) so point number 2 above looks especially interesting. 4) Balancing and climbing opponents are considered flat footed. Also opponents charging or running across uneven ground require a balance check which if successful means they are balancing and therefore flat footed while charging. Sounds exploitable for a rogue like yours truly. I just haven't figured out what happens if your opponent fails their balance checks......flat footed...or off balance as defined by 3.0 rules Happy travels |
| riceisnice07-29-03, 01:20 AM | Posh. What're these so called Wizards of the Coast trying to pull? I'll have none of this silly wandering around in wagons all day long. I did a fair bit o' traveling when I was a bit younger, but now the people writing these tomes have made us out to all be caravan-jockeys. Well, hear now, that just isn't that halfling way. Give me a pipe, some good tobacco, and my old rocking chair over that nonsense anyday. -Old Rummeril Fairweather, Sage of Lindenwood Hairfoot halfling Rog3/Exp6. |
| jugah07-30-03, 03:35 AM | Dear Riceisnice Re Caravan jockeys. I agree, it's not good to be reduced to a shadow of one's former self. As a half-Ranger, I find that even the ancient art of ranging can sometimes be only an element of its former self, thanks to the effects of corporate globalisation. Whoever would have thought that even our realms would bear the ghastly fruits of such corruption? In some lands I have ranged throughout, forests have been reduced to a few hundred metres in width and are surrounded by massive roads filled with strange wagons. What do you make of all this? Jugah |
| dego2307-30-03, 08:26 AM | Hello all, my name is Milo Goodbarrel. Born into the carnival life with my family as the acrobat. Traveled through many towns and decided to go off on my own. Now traveling with great friends and my favorite line to say to them....it's better to be a halfling than nothing at all! I help them adventuring, fitting into small places that those funny humans can't fit. I am available for any types of adventures, from dragon slaying, and yes I have slain a dragon in my time, to bar hopping and smoking the finest weed in the land. So please lets come together and have some food and drink together. I can spin a tale or two about my times with the "biggies." |
| Thorvar07-30-03, 04:26 PM | Hail and well met to all of you! I'm curious what those with such a vested interest in Halflings think of my thread. http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=71440 Do any of you agree? Disagree? Or has this subject been previously beaten into the ground? Feedback appreciated if you can! :) |
| jugah07-30-03, 08:43 PM | Thorvar - I say yay to new lands, especially when one braves oceans and caverns and mountains and orcs. But when one travels purely to fight the hordes, and for no other vested interest, then I say nay to that! -Jugah |
| Ouroboros07-31-03, 01:34 PM | Lets talk about the hairyfoot shall we.... are the feet of woman hairy? (well dwarf players argue if the woman should have a beard or what) ps halfling feet if you want to talk about dwarven beards do it in the dwarven foundation:D |
| JoyLynn08-03-03, 12:55 PM | Well now, such a quiet foundation. I'm afraid I have reached a sad pause in my travels. My adventuring group has disbanded ( the DM quit  ). So I guess I will rest here and practice with my skip stones until something interesting comes along. |
| Frostbite_Ravenheart08-03-03, 01:01 PM | Aye aye, Whats closer to an Elf then another elf? A HALFLING!...or a gnome...but thats beside the point. My point is that i a long time ago on the other boards started a PRC contest and a thread for halflings. That was a long time ago. I DEMAND U GIVE ME MY POSITION AS THE LEADER OF THE FOUNDATION/THREAD THINGY! errr Just kidding but i would like to join :P. As i posted before on another thread, halflings suck as a race. In an army of all the races they would probably die. I think the halfling are only peacefull beacuse they have to be....but there actuallt psycoticly crazy and warlike who suffer berserkergang like the vikings do but are just waiting....biding there time...yes biding there time until they shall STRIKE AND SMITE THE %#$*# BIG PEOPLE....Yes....The halfling are comming but ur stupid second level dwarvin divners just dont know it yet....MUAHAHHAHA -Feandorin The hidden Elf King who after getting bit by a were-halfling belives hes the Dark lord of the halflings... |
| OrigamiCommando08-03-03, 02:35 PM | I'd like to join. I'll post my Halfling racial prestige class as well. Pardon the lack of editing, I'll do that later. The Halfling Manslayer [HMS] Stories are told of halflings who have the ability to fell almost any target in a single blow and dissappear without a trace, even more efficiently then the greatest assassins. Many unfortunate souls have met their doom to these halflings in crowded places and in broad daylight on busy streets where most assassins wouldn't dare strike. These chosen few halflings are known as Manslayers, a name they proudly accept and a name that those marked for death by a Manslayer fear. The training to become a Manslayer is a complex set of trials that test an applicants stealth, ability with weapons, and sheer toughness in the most painful and taxing situations. Much is speculated about these trials, but the halflings invited into the ranks of the Manslayers would sooner die than tell any outsider details of the trials or its leaders. Requirements Race: Halfling Skill Focus (Bluff) Bluff 10 ranks Sneak Attack: +4D6 Class Features HD: D6 Skill Points: 8 + Intelligence Modifier Skills: Same as rogues (see PHB) Weapon and Armor Profficiencies: All simple weapons and all martial and exotic thrown weapons. At 1rst level and every other level thereafter, the HMS may add 1 die of damage to her sneak attack like a rogue. Improved Sneak Attack (Ex): The HMS develops an almost unbelievable amount of precision with her weapons and whenever she performs a sneak attack may deal more grevous wounds than normal. At 2nd level, the HMS upgrades to D8's when rolling Sneak Attack Damage. At 6th level this increases to D10's and, finally, to D12's at 10th level, making the HMS unparrelleled in her ability to slay her enemies. Improved Combat Feint (Ex): The HMS learns the art of fast talking and body language, using it to feint in combat to a much greater effect. The HMS, when using a feint in combat detailed in the PHB under the skill Bluff, may do so much more quickly. Rather than taking a standard action to feint she may do so using a move equivilent action. Because she feints more hurreidly and thus more sloppily, however, the target may add +5 to his Sense Motive opposed roll in this situation. Kill in Plain Sight (Ex): Using this ability, the HMS is capable is striking so quickly as to fool the untrained eye. If she makes a sneak attack and kills her target in a single hit, she may make a Bluff check in order to hide the fact that it was her who struck. All parties who would normally be able to see this attack and react to it must instead make a Spot check with the DC equal to the result of the HMS Bluff check or be completely unaware of the attacks origin. |
| krunzi08-03-03, 05:15 PM | cool prestige class, it seems.. very overpowered tough :) fighter base attack bonus, rogue sneak attack, amazing save (+9 +10 +9) and then that higehr D on sneak attack... i dont really know what to say about that, not sue if its insane or maybe OK. the feinting stuff seems fair enough. |
| OrigamiCommando08-03-03, 09:01 PM | Whoops. Read off the wrong prestige class for the information on BAB and saves. Pretty dumb mistake. I fixed it though. |
| krunzi08-04-03, 01:27 PM | the BAB is still strange, no other classes got a +9 BAB on 10 lvls. saves should be +3 +7 +3 if they would follow the normal rules anyways. BAB should be +7 if were using the normal tables BAB SAVES lvl 1 +0 +0 +2 +0 lvl 2 +1 +0 +3 +0 lvl 3 +2 +1 +3 +1 lvl 4 +3 +1 +4 +1 lvl 5 +3 +1 +4 +1 lvl 6 +4 +2 +5 +2 lvl 7 +5 +2 +5 +2 lvl 8 +6 +2 +6 +2 lvl 9 +6 +3 +6 +3 lvl 10 +7 +3 +7 +3 |
| OrigamiCommando08-04-03, 03:58 PM | Yeh, that's a better table. Go for that one. |
| Thelonius08-05-03, 08:18 PM | :bounce: anyone played a halfling outrider??? seems kind of like a weak PrC... purely defensive. |
| Stoutfingers08-05-03, 11:24 PM | I agree with krunzi's progression, otherwise the class is a bit too powerful. It is still on the powerful side, though. The increase in sneak attack die is REALLY GOOD...probably too good. Also, consider making a few more prereqs...probably something like high ranks in hide and move silently. |
| krunzi08-06-03, 12:54 AM | yea make MS or Hide requirement or something like that, maybe disguise? |

| Valthran08-06-03, 12:44 PM | Pets, I've always wanted one but I just can't seem to keep them. Somehow they always seem to end up on one side of a city wall and me on the other. That or nasty traps or creatures keep eating them. Its quite disheartening..... Now my cousin Walden Foxtale he likes to breed dogs, some as big as donkey. The Foxtales have always had a knack for growing things. My Aunt Meladin Thistledown, before she gave up wagoneering, use to keep a brace of ferrets. She had them trained to do all sorts of things, it was amazing the different types of latches they could open. While I am lucky at many things even for a halfling, pets just aren't one of them. How about the rest of you? |

| Imelda08-08-03, 10:31 AM | I think I'll sit and rest a bit. I've just returned from a long journey in which I had to (once again) save my tall companions from certain death. I save their lives time and time again and they dare to call me a coward! I've tried to explain to them the difference between being cowardly and being smart. Just because I check every door before entering and I prefer waiting in the doorway to rushing headlong into battle doesn't make me a coward. I think that's good tactical sense. Those of us who are smaller have to use our brains as well as our strength to win battles. But the tallies just don't get it. They keep insisting that I'm wrong and point out my few injuries (in comparison to their many scars and wounds) as proof of cowardice! It's my opinion that my luck in escaping injury is a result of my taking the time to plan before attacking. sigh  When will they learn? Isn't it almost time for elevenses? I think I'll start getting that ready. I have to eat up while I can. Tonight I have to leave again on another adventure. sigh Sometimes I think that maybe I'll just stay at home. But then I realize that my tall companions would never survive without me and so I must go. Tea anyone? |
| Valthran08-08-03, 04:34 PM | Yes I would have to agree that the tallees have some strange views of the world Khard, my half-orc barbarian companion, seems to take the direct approach as a virtue of some kind. The Paladins and Clerics are often not much better 'The shortest distance between two points is a straight line' they often say. Where is the virtue in pounding down a gate and waking up the whole hobgoblin community when climbing over the wall and opening the gate from the inside is so much simpler? Wouldn't it be better to quietly sneak in and once you have the evil Baron on the end of your knife point inform him you are taking him to justice than shouting your intentions first from outside his battlements? "The best defense is a good offence" the fighter types always say. Charging a group of kobolds or gnolls across their prepared trap laiden ground of choice is hardly my idea of fun. If I didn't move around behind, while the biggees were making all sorts of noise wallowing through traps and ranged attacks, to eliminate key opponents before they let loose the burning pitch or bags of poisoness snakes they would never survive long enough to finish their 'good offence'. Of course no one ever appreciates prevention because they never know what could have happened. I mean whats wrong with having your enemy come to you over ground of your choosing. Dead is dead. I doubt the poor unfortunate really cares if he dies from a sling bullet to the face when his shield wavers as he stumbles over a rope or has his skull split in two by a stalwart paladin standing right in front of him. Oh well, the biggees to have their good points, for instance the tankards they use for ale are just the right size |
| Thelonius08-08-03, 07:45 PM | ale? "what's that?" asked Pippin "This... is a Pint" said Merry "They come in PINTS!"... |
| DanielTheHalfling08-11-03, 08:34 AM | Excuse me, but this is the HALFLING foundation, not the ROGUE HALFLING foundation or the KENDER foundation. I bet that we can have a conversation about non-rogue or non-kenderlike halflings. For example, I once played a composite shortbow archer halfling fighter. His name was Perry Noñujil, and he rode a riding dog named Fido. (Man, am I original  ) He wasn't kenderish or roguish at all. The only way in which he could possibly be qualified as roguish was that he had a 16 in DEX, as the average DEX-based halfling has, and he also had a 14 in STR. He made attacks from Fido and hit sometimes, but had to retreat after a young green dragon ate his mount. (It was such a good dog... http://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/Smilies/dannysad.txt) |
| Valthran08-11-03, 02:37 PM | While I do admit to a rogouish world view I still think running straight ahead and bashing things is very much a large persons more natural style. We halflings can be fearless but we are also survivors who generally fit in where ever we are. We tend to work with the enviroment and the situation more than try to force things to fit. We don't run as fast, lift as much, use as big heavy weapons but we do throw, climb, hide, and sneak better than the bigger folk. While I do know halflings who like to stand right in your face, figuratively speaking if there opponent is human sized, speak their mind and hand you your innards if you disagree, they are a bit more on the unique side. There is this one wandering paladin of Yolanda I have run into off and on over the years who is a wonder to behold. Her ability to set people back on the straight and narrow is scary, while looking marvelous at the same time I might add. But even she has a tendancy to talk, think, plan, and some times let the punishment fit the crime without a direct confrontation. But no we halfings are definitely a diverse bunch |
| Thelonius08-13-03, 11:33 PM | :( bump :bounce: |
| Thelonius08-13-03, 11:45 PM | is it just me, or does the druid class look like a good choice for a halfling? good ac due to size, +1 with the sling, +4 to hide, good saves and HP produce flame is a thrown attack so +1... longstrider... great big ole animal companion... ...could be a contender... |

I think that they would make good druids, but unfortunately, [Produce Flame] is the only druid thrown attack, and is not the only druid spell. What are your opinions, everyone? |
| Y2Keevin08-14-03, 02:17 PM | Halflings are cool. *Nodnod* Halflings as druids, eh? Well... Hm. I personally had a lot of fun last year trying to decide if I could play a halfling Paladin. But nothing ever came of it, because I was busy playing a Dwarf Ranger. A Druid could be interesting, but numberswise, not the most brilliant idea for use of an odd class/race pairing. Which is why I'd love to do it. I HATE it when people only decide to be a race because it is the numberswise most intelligent decision. I play 3.0 Rangers because I like the idea behind the class. Bards rock, because they're so fun to play. If someone doesn't like you, make an insulting song about them and make it popular. I've been the main combat monkey in a quest party as a bard. ...Wow, I diverged a lot. I would say go ahead with any halfling/druid combos, because it sounds like a lot of fun. "Back off, before the tiny anger of the forest comes at your shins!" "PFeh, I'm not afraid of AAAAAAIGH! FIRE! STABBINGS! OH THE PAIN!" XD |
| Thelonius08-14-03, 05:33 PM | i didn't come up with this idea, but the druid is proficient with the sickle... and a halfing druid would be right at castration height! How's that for a threat! "Back off Ogre... or you'l be singing soprano for the rest of your days!" [I think I saw that one from a gnome druid discussion] ...come to think of it, a halfling Bard might also be pretty cool, add some tumble to your performances... maybe a harmonica as your instrument... a little bayonette for the harmonica... of course, no one wold take him seriously, which would be a HUGE advantage in combat! |
| Frostbite_Ravenheart08-15-03, 06:13 PM | The Halfling, Fighter-Paladin Prince who leads armys of Halflings, Gnomes and even the Big People to war under his banners. Sound like a good pc? Yeah sucks though that the dm wouldent let me play it :(...we switch turns you know though. He finished his campain then become an elf who hated "The little races" And one day he ****** off the wrong Halfling Fighter-Paladin Prince...I have to say GLORY FOR THE HALFINGS! For that day :D |
| Valthran08-18-03, 04:48 PM | I like the idea of the halfing druid, Small size makes it easier to hide in the forest and easier for an animal companion to carry you. Also the animal companion would offset and speed disadvantage +1 sling plus likely at least +1 from dex will help ranged attacks I think a halfling would make a great unseen protector of the forest. |
| Drugo08-18-03, 08:31 PM | Heeey How couldn't have seen this post sooner? Can I join your hot hot hot foundation? I play two halflings right now, one in 3.0 and the other in a Live Action game. Overall in all the games, I played seven halfling characters (all with the same family name :embarrass ), as it's the greatest race ever!! For the halfling druid, seems to be a nice idea but I think the best druids would be the gnomes. Glory to the halfling paladin, the halfling barbarian, the halfling rogue and the halfling sorcerer! :D |
| DanielTheHalfling08-19-03, 05:51 PM | Drugo, you're number 15. Put that in your sig to reflect it. And you forgot one kind of halfling. The human-hater 3.5 ranger halfling I'm playing right now! (Just kidding, you didn't need to know that http://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/dannywinking.txt.) |
| Valthran08-19-03, 06:01 PM | I like the idea of playing different halflings from the same extended family. It gives you a chance to play different character types but still keep the sense of family history and being part of a larger story that is somewhat game/session independant. I am currently working on a rogue turned paladin of Yondola lycanthrope hunter who will be a cousin of my current halfling rogue/cleric. I guess being called by the halfling pantheon will be somewhat of a family trait. She could still turn into a rogue/ranger but somehow the rogue/paladin concept just seems more interesting.....now if I can just get myself to fit into those tight paladin shoes. |
| Thelonius08-19-03, 07:51 PM | that's a really good idea playing the family tree... do you rotate dm's settings, etc.? just curious about the logistics and such. what's the family name, I may be related :) |
| Drugo08-19-03, 08:41 PM | I am currently working on a rogue turned paladin of Yondola lycanthrope hunter who will be a cousin of my current halfling rogue/cleric. I guess being called by the halfling pantheon will be somewhat of a family trait. That's what I plan to do too. I now play a very classic halfling rogue (a prankster with an incredibly high dex, never seen, never heard), and if for some reason I stop playing this character (he dies, he retire, he's the source of the mighty DM's anger or anything like that), I'll play one of his numerous cousins. I don't know yet if it'll be a paladin or a sorcerer (our party already has a paladin, but it's a very classic paladin and I must say that I hate the old picture of the glorious paladin on his white horse seeking evil to smite...) An halfling sorcerer/wizard is also a pain in the ass... Total of +2 AC (DEX bonus + small size) help for the lack of armor, +1 to attack roll helps for the poor attacks rolls of the sorc. The +4 hide is cool for a sorcerer who has Silent Spell, same for the +2 move silently. With some rogue levels, it can be a substitute for the Arcane Trickster if you're not into 3.5 yet. But just a stealthy sorcerer (I say sorcerer because they don't have to plan which spells will be casted with SilentSpell or other metamagic feats) can do a lot of damage. The dex helps for the Reflex saving throw, they have at least a nice +1 in Fortitude, where all other spellcasters are very low, and a very cool Will Save, and a very very cool Will Save against fear. You give him a sling, like the halfling druid, which is a simple weapon, usable by the spellcasters. If I'd play this char, it'll be the family's weirdo. When his magic skills weren't usefull, he'd just be a shy little halfling just following the party in silence, but when his fellow party members were in danger or on the edge of a battle, he'll get filled with anger, ready to burn every living thing daring to stand in his way... (maybe a little too much agressive for an halfling but it can be cool) |
| Valthran08-20-03, 02:25 PM | Well my family mostly hales from Faerun though I am sure a few have walked the planes in their time. My family name is Trouttales named after my Great grandfather Longcast. We don't know what his family name was before he married greatgrandma or even what plane he came from for sure. He had quite a few tales to tell and it was hard to be sure when he was pulling one over on you......I mean the verifiable tales of some of his deals and adventures after meeting Greatgrandma are hard enough to swallow. And short of magic it was impossible to tell when he was lying and even magic wasn't alway reliable. Anyways one of his favorite stories was how in his day how he liked to do real fishing...catching trout big enough to ride on...in fact that was the only way to tire them out so you could bring them to shore. Hard to know if this was true as a number of witnesses remember him riding crocodiles when they were kids...croc busting he called it. A lot of people think he just made this up to keep up with greatgrandma's side of the family...the Kiteriders. Loved making kites they did, the bigger the better. On a windy day it is still not uncommon to see a few of them sailing off over the trees. My cousin the Paladin is from the Kiterider side of the family...not always the most sensible that group of halflings but good folk all the same. |
| Valthran08-21-03, 02:34 PM | A question for all the other halflings out there How do you see Halfling culture? What source material/guidlines do you use to establish it? How do you use this background culture when playing your character? I have often seen other's view of how they see halfling (often negative) or how they think they should be but how do WE see OURSELVES. I mostly use the background given in the Dragon issue on halflings plus further background from the Forgotten Realms Campaign setting and the out look of the Halfling Pantheon from 'Faith and Pantheons'. We also play in a Faerun setting. This is the backdrop I use to help myself make sure my Halfling character and his relatives are not just small humans. How about you???? |
| Thelonius08-21-03, 07:54 PM | I don't know about the rest of you out there... but I tend to think of them as a cross between the British and Irish cultures. The tolerance of the Brits... and the liveliness of the Irish They'll put up with a lot and have fun doing it. |
| Valthran08-22-03, 04:15 PM | Yes with some of the Irish blarney and luck as well. |
| Valthran08-25-03, 04:00 PM | Hellooooo!!!!!!! The lights are out and nobody is home. The rest of the boards had best look to their purses because if there are no halflings here that must mean they are all abroad in the world. All the more food and drink for me.. |
| Drugo08-25-03, 08:03 PM | I'm here, between the 2 jobs and the school... At least I try... |
| Valthran08-27-03, 06:34 PM | Hello all you halfling fighters out there What styles do you prefer? The close to the ground tank/turtle? The nimble duelist? The ranged combat specialist? Have the 3.5 changes of weapon sizes, reach weapons, ranged weapons caused you to rethink your style or add some new wrinkles. Share your successes and strategies with the rest of us. Show the boards you don't have to be a Hulk to be a fighter. |
| Frostbite_Ravenheart08-27-03, 07:11 PM | Aye i am a courages halfling warrior-prince who charges into battle with his mithril greatsword and his Greatsword finnese feat :D NOW THATS POWERGAMING FOR YOU! (trys to make a copywrite makr but insteads decides to destroy the post so no one reads) Posts will be destroyed in T minas ten seconds  9.... 8...  7.... 6..... 5.... 12....  4... 3...:( 2....:( :behold: 1....:b: BOOM! :b: |
| Thelonius08-27-03, 09:46 PM | I actually can't wait to try the small version of the greatsword... could be very, very nice! tie that in with Low Blow and a few rogue levels, and that is one mean castration! |
| Valthran08-28-03, 12:31 PM | Thelonous, Druid and castration with sickle Fighter castratration with greatsword There appears to be a pattern emerging here:rolleyes: |
| atnoon08-28-03, 12:49 PM | A Halfling foundation! What a great idea. Please I'm here to request my membership in this foundation, fellow hobits. |
| Thelonius08-28-03, 11:51 PM | Originally posted by Valthran Thelonous, Druid and castration with sickle Fighter castratration with greatsword There appears to be a pattern emerging here:rolleyes: was I that obvious??? :smirk: (there's a tall bad guy in my current campaign that I'm itching to introduce to Low Blow... unfortunately, I have to wait 'til next level to do it) |
| JoyLynn08-29-03, 10:09 PM | Greetings Sweet Friends, I have a three day weekend and thought that I would come set up a few bottles of wine to share with my friends - old and new. Have a glass! I think the pattern of castration is a very good battle tactic. The "Tallies" are rather at the right height and everyone loses a great deal of dexterity when they try to fight or defend themselves with their legs crossed and a hip turned or with one or both hands over their privates. :smirk: :smirk: :smirk: As for my fighting style : the nimble duelist. Remember: Tumble early and often. May I refill your glass my friend, A toast to .......... What shall we toast to? |
| Drugo08-30-03, 03:06 PM | A toast to .......... What shall we toast to? The halfling supremacy! :D |
| Mighty Halfling08-30-03, 09:44 PM | Please sign me up to the foundation! ---------- I just started a new Halfling at 4th level. He's a druid and is doing well. He's got a big ole' St. Bernard as an animal companion. As I mentioned in a 8/14/2003 post on another board (and you've been talking about too), halfling druids are a great combo (summing up my original post & responses): >>> +1 bonus to slings, which is a druid weapon. >>> Longstrider spell allows 30 ft movement for hours at a time. >>> The spell Produce Flame is a thrown weapon, so you get a +1 bonus to hit with it, plus it has no range penalty. >>> +1 to HIT for being small, also helps those ranged spells. >>> High dexterity and +1 AC bonus for being small negates armor limitations. >>> With a Riding Dog animal companion, you can be mounted and in a five-by-five square. >>> Ride is a now a druid skill. >>> Wild shaping into a medium-sized creature, with a 30 or greater move is helpful (although you lose your +1 to hit and AC). ----------- My 4th-level druid, Dunleary Thorngage, ends up having a +11 to hit with his Sling. +3 BAB, +1 with Slings, +1 magical sling, +1 within 30 feet with Point Blank Shot, +5 with a 19 Dex. I was hitting like crazy on my first night out, although that darn Grey Render we ran into didn't seem to mind! |
| DanielTheHalfling09-01-03, 10:11 AM | atnoon, Mighty Halfling, you're on the list. (check out the first post on the first page to check it out.) @ atnoon: That's the time you "operate"? At Noon? |
| atnoon09-01-03, 09:16 PM | Originally posted by DanielTheHalfling atnoon, Mighty Halfling, you're on the list. (check out the first post on the first page to check it out.) @ atnoon: That's the time you "operate"? At Noon? :nonono: Quite wrong my South America friend. It would not make sense if I explain it in English, so to make a long story short, it is a Portuguese* word game with my nickname translated to English which became the name of my first 3rd edition character. Also the pronounciation is cool "Atnoon". * For those of you who don't know, in Brasil we speak Portuguese. We do not speak Spanish nor there is a language called Brasilian. :teach: |
| DanielTheHalfling09-02-03, 08:33 AM | Perdón, atnoon. Yo no sé portugués. Sólo sé español. |
| Valthran09-03-03, 12:34 PM | Should halflings have a homeland?? I rather like the idea that for the most part they do not. It allows them to mix with everyone else almost anywhere and halflings don't need to get trapped in that reclusive terratorial stuff common to elves and dwarves or the we are so hidden we are forgotten thing gnomes have going. Humans want to own everything, fence it in and call it theirs. Personally as long as I can walk there and trade/work there I could care less who has their name on the map. Good fences may make good neighbors but they also seem to lead to a lot of wars. Any town, any tavern I can find some decent sized people who appreciate a good meal and a good story because halflings are everywhere. A halflings home is where he and his family are. I like it this way, how about the rest of you?? |
| atnoon09-03-03, 09:58 PM | I would prefer if they had a homeland. Maybe because I like Hobbits (and the Halfing/Hobbit type). |
| Drugo09-03-03, 10:14 PM | Maybe not a homeland. But just cities of their own towns, (i can't get out of my mind the picture of the Shire as we saw in the movie of the fellowship of the ring) in the rural parts of the human territory. If you want to place halfling in a more urban place, I see a city mostly like Bree (this time I refer to the book, not to the movie). I tend to see halflings mostly like hobbits. If you see halflings more like a mix between hobbits and kender, (or just the way they are described in the PHB), maybe they shouldn't have an homeland. I don't know why I stick with the hobbit idea. This year again I've played a hobbit in Live Action RPG, and it was like the other time... A Bilbo/Frodo type (the first was a carpenter, the second merchant), who ends up with a huge load of problems and become the only chance of the good guys. Always. Even if I just want to play a nice and kind hobbit with no problems, I'll always end up with all the shi t. |
| Valthran09-04-03, 03:05 PM | Don't get me wrong, I can see hafling towns, villages, neighborhoods as this fits in easily with the whole family values thing that give haflings a lawful flavor. I just don't see the dying for this piece of land nationalism, being an international power type of homeland. Dying protecting the farm your family lives on from raiders is one thing but dying because you are defending The Farm just seems unhalfling like to me. A number of my characters relatives on both the Kiterider and Trouttale sides of the family live nice mostly sedentary lives in stable halfling communities. I am sure one of these will be where my character will settle and contribute once he mostly retires from wandering and adventuring. |
| gtoast9909-04-03, 03:51 PM | Oh! Oh! Can I join?!? My name's Billy Creampuff. And this is Tree. *holds up a gnarled staff.* Tree told me to take up the ways of the woods, but that was a long time ago. we've been together ever since. Oh. You're probably wondering... about the fact that I'm green. It's from spending so much time with the plants, you know. I'm an excellent gardener, herbalist, and the like. I loves my trees. They tell me I'm powerful. I don't know about that, but oh well. There aren't many druidical types in the land i come from. Apparently (or so Zwieback tells me, and he's one smart fellow!) I'm the most adept druid in the land of Kor. I'm pretty well respected where I come from. (Out of character, 7th druid, 10th verdant lord) Cookie? *passes out cookies to the lot of you.* I made em myself. They're from the "Billy's Magical Baked Goods" collection, these in particular are cookies of light curing. hehe :-D I hope you all like em. So do I get to join? pleeeeease?!?!! |
| JoyLynn09-07-03, 12:32 PM | Wow, these cookies are three days old and still pretty good. Yum-Yum, As for a homeland and other things. I posted this website before - it's not mine - but so much of it rings true to me. http://myth-drannor.net/DlabraddathNet/z-Beluir/Main.htm I'm sorry I am out of wine today dear friends. I need to make a trip into town for some, any one want to go with me? |
| Yipwyg the Mighty09-07-03, 02:26 PM | I'm in! I love halflings! And playing halflings! *switches to his halfling evoker alter ego* OY! G'day to you, sirs, would you like some potions? I Got some right here... *opens bag of holding, accidentally sets off his wand of Fireball* GODAMMIT! *Runs around flaming and screaming for help* |
| DanielTheHalfling09-08-03, 08:39 AM | Billy Creaampuff, you're #18, and Ypwyg the Mighty, you're 19. Welcome to this Merry foundation! About the subject of lands, my character lived in a halfing permanent village but one day, when he was a kid, this village was raided and his parents slaughtered by some over-agressive human bandits. He only got away because he hid extremely well. Ever since, he retreated into the nearby forest and swore vengance against those cruel Big People. |
| Valthran09-08-03, 11:48 AM | Joylynn, I just got around to visiting the halfling site you linked to, a great read and worth the trip. |
| gtoast9909-09-03, 09:24 AM | I came from a halfling community back in my youth. But then the campaign up and called me to defend the homeland. I got separated from my unit, got lost in the woods... I spent a long time in there... Every time I thought I knew where i was going, i ended up in the other direction... By the time I finally made it out to the Human town of Bloodroot, I was far away from my homeland... Never have been back. maybe one day I should track it down. In the Kingdom of Kor, where I live now, there aren't any Halfling Towns. The closest we do have is Tirstan Kor, the human capital. we have a "halfling district" where I pick up all my baking supplies. I'm thinking of having a magical oven crafted... perhaps one that doesn't require any fueling, and is always the right temperature? Oh! and with an alarm spell on it to let me know when the muffins are done! Speaking of which... I think the muffins are done... I gotta go check on that. Sorry to get sidetracked from the homeland question, but when I return, there will be MUFFINS FOR ALL!!!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA |
| magicmarker1309-09-03, 01:50 PM | yo there, i play a ranger/rogue hobnizz who's name is roscoe underhill, there are various cool things i could talk about concerning my character, such as the personal significance of my gear and what not, (our dm is really good with backstory and detail) but i'll pass for now, and simply say that i've never had more fun in dnd than playing a halfling, oh, and by the way, voice has never been so important as with this character, it can make or break role playing, for the record, my halfling is a 2 foot 10 inch pikie. that's right, when in character, i sound like brad pitt from snatch. my guy is the comic relief of the party. anyway, halflings and the rest of the small folk rule and all that jazz. |
| Jagermeister09-09-03, 05:33 PM | Do ye like degs? |
| magicmarker1309-09-03, 05:36 PM | as i matter of fact i do, ass... |
| Chaeros09-09-03, 05:48 PM | Likes degs a little bit to much, if you ask me, there was some strange ....actions with a certain deg. |
| DanielTheHalfling09-10-03, 08:36 AM | As much as anyone may like dogs (or "degs", as you call them) this is not the place to discuss the topic. If you wish to do so, create a thread on the Off-Topic room named "do ye like degs?". But, the Off-Topic room is the other way. I think you are all lost, board-travelers. But, if on the other hand, your purpose is to join this Foundation, then tell me and I'll give you and your degs a number! http://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/dannybiggrin.txt |
| JoyLynn09-13-03, 03:48 PM | :cloud9: :bump: It's the weekend again. The fact that there is no one to talk to here dosen't lessen my smile. :D :D :D :D I'll just go practice my skip stones and check back later.;) ;) ;) |
| Drugo09-13-03, 04:32 PM | Week-end with part-time job is a way harder than week with full-time studies... awwww |
| Mighty Halfling09-13-03, 05:35 PM | Might I direct you all to another of my postings ... http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99060 It's about Halflings after all! |
| JoyLynn09-14-03, 07:39 PM | I just read your other post Mighty Halfling. Very Cool. My only problem is that I can't draw well enough to do that.  |
| Valthran09-15-03, 11:13 AM | While I realize this is not the halfling rogue fondation;) I am curious what flavor of rogues are out there? As merchants and travelers I can see silver tongued opportunist/con artist as popular. Small size and deft hands make the pick pocket in the crowd a natural. Hide, climb, move silently bonuses also make the cat-burgler type appealing. The mugger or extortionist seems less likely to me. What flavor do your halfling rogues come in? Is being a rogue a full time thing or more a part-time hobby? Does the flavor vary from PC to NPC? |
| DanielTheHalfling09-16-03, 10:10 AM | I've got levels in the rouge, I mean rogue class only to be more adept in my role as a forest-knowing Vietnam-like Ranger. I don't pick pockets, despite my credibly high DEX(22; +6). I do Climb and Jump. I Move Silently and Hide extremely well, thanks mainly to my Boots of Halflingkind and Cloak of Halflingkind that give a +12 to Move silently and Hide checks, respectively. I've also maxed out my ranks to 13; so my check bonuses are: Hide: 35=+13+12+4+6 Move Silently: 33=+13+12+2+6 So I can sneak and snipe a hell lotta good!http://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/dannybiggrin.txt Man, I´m so coolhttp://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/dannycool.txt |
| Cade Underbough09-16-03, 10:05 PM | Might I join? Cade Underbough (who, due to college coming to a party member, is now back at first). Halfling Rogue, lvl. 1. But he's got 20 for dexterity! Rolled an eighteen! Sharpshooting rogue who's very older sister is a paladin of Yondolla. Apple of the parent's eyes, she set an example for him of what was right. She also kind of hogged the strength sector (sibling rivalry) so he went the way of 'twang. you're dead'. He left home at fifteen with a sheepdog named Fluffy. He and she grew close and now he has a riding sheepdog. Worships Olidammarra in addition to Yondolla, caused schism with due to the preachings of the local cleric that those who steal take Yondolla's "take what life provides" teachings too literally. Has gnome fetish. Low wisdom, high intelligence. Takes the initiative too frequently. Wears bright red armour with symbol of Yondolla emblazoned on it, black cloak with brooch of Olidammarra's mask. Symbolism, anybody? Intended prestige class: Temple Raider of Olidammarra. |
| DanielTheHalfling09-17-03, 11:33 AM | Cade Underbough, you're extremely welcome. Your member number is the same as your character's DEX. Yes, 20! Please join us in the discussion of... something... related with... halflings. |
| Drugo09-20-03, 12:24 PM | I'm also playling and halfling rogue (lvl 10, soon 11), with a Dex of 20 (26 with magical improvements) I played an halfling sorcerer in the last session but he died at the first blow he recieved (at the very end of the session). He had a strenght of 6, dex 12, con 14, int 11, sag 13, cha 16. But it was my first spellcaster ever, and now I can say: fireball rulz allllll |
| JoyLynn09-25-03, 12:42 AM | :bump: Are there any halfling remedies for food poisoning? Maybe I need a cleric of Yondalla.  I check back tommorrow if I feel better. |
| anglar09-25-03, 01:05 AM | You could try lots of good food. Or, if you don't mind, induce vomitting to remove as much of the tainted food as possible. I've also heard good things about a bismuth concoction that an alchemist could whip up for you. |
| JoyLynn09-25-03, 07:12 AM | Thank You Anglar, I think I'll try the bismuth concoction, believe it or not, I actually know what that is. With a halfling love of lots of good food, they must know several good remidies when they run across something that doesn't agree with them. Or perhaps with all they eat they have "stomachs of iron" and never fall prey heartburn and upset stomachs. :) |
| Valthran09-25-03, 03:31 PM | Well back in first edition we did have pretty strong stomachs as we use to get the same constitution bonus to saves against poisons as dwarves. Somes sources such as the Dragon issue on halflings do describe how most races agree that halflings excell at cooking. They also list foods with alchemy properties that are halfling specialties. I am sure there must be some almost magical heartburn remedies out there. As the halfling deity of hearth, home and hospitality a cleric of Cyrrolalee would also be a good bet. |
| Valthran09-25-03, 03:35 PM | Speaking of the halfling issue of Dragon: This issue also mentioned that besides cooking and rock throwing that halflings love riddles. I would love to incorporate this love of riddles into my character but unfortunately I am not personally well versed in riddles. Does anyone now a source (Idiots guide to riddles, 101 riddles, etc.) of riddles I could use??? |
| Mighty Halfling09-26-03, 09:47 AM | The british publishing company Cassell put out a great book of Riddles, probably more than 3,000 or so. I don't have the book in front of me right now, but it had some title like "Book of Riddles" or "Encyclopedia of Riddles." I have it at home and will search for it and post the name and ISBN. |
| JoyLynn09-28-03, 11:04 AM | I'd be interested in that also Mighty Halfling. Here's an old riddle for you to try out Valthran: Thirty-two white horses on a red hill Now they dance, now they stamp, Now they stand still. What are they? |
| Drugo09-28-03, 05:40 PM | I think everybody here has read that riddle in the book... i mean... the book... you know... with someone small in it... who throws rocks... and eat 6 meals a day... :D |
| Valthran09-29-03, 05:26 PM | That book title would be great As for the riddle I will have to give it a think......... |
| JoyLynn10-05-03, 11:28 AM | Well, Drugo, since Valthran has not come back to answer my previous riddle, and you odveously know the answer to that one, what about another ? Do you know the ancient riddle of the Spinx? |
| Drugo10-05-03, 08:59 PM | Is it the one about the animal who walks on four, two or three legs depending of the hour of the day? |
| Valthran10-06-03, 01:14 PM | Well apparently I am a bit riddle challanged as I have yet to come up with a reasonable answer to Joylynn's riddle. So what is the answer?? |
| Drugo10-06-03, 04:36 PM | Theet |
| JoyLynn10-07-03, 08:27 PM | Thirty two white horses on a red hill are your teeth and gums. Now they dance - talking Now they stamp - chewing Now they stand still - closed mouth Yes Drugo that's the one. Do you have any? |
| Drugo10-07-03, 08:48 PM | Here's a little one, which seems the hobbit type A red cap on my head, a stone in my throat, if you tell me the answer, I'll give you a Groat. What am I? This one is also cool, but you will find it on every website of the world: I have rivers without water, Forests without trees, Mountains without rocks Towns without houses. What am I? |
| HrdCor10-08-03, 04:38 PM | A red cap on my head, a stone in my throat, if you tell me the answer, I'll give you a Groat. A cherry my fellow halfling. I have rivers without water, Forests without trees, Mountains without rocks Towns without houses. Tis a map. Bromsby Tarken at your service. Treasure Hunter extrodinaire! |
| HrdCor10-08-03, 04:41 PM | It is stated in the history tomes of my people that some things are improved by death. Tell me, what stinks while living, but in death, smells good? And while we converse of death, He who makes it, has no need of it. He who buys it, has no use for it. He who uses it can neither see nor feel it. What is it? |
| Drugo10-08-03, 04:55 PM | I also know that one  it's weird because i can't figure out riddles, but I have a good memory and I remember a lot of them. I'll let the others find the awnser. |
| HrdCor10-08-03, 05:08 PM | How about letting Tarken here join your band of merry fellows? |
| JoyLynn10-08-03, 05:33 PM | I'm sure you are very wecome Tarken, Daniel the Halfling should be along soon to add you to the list and give you a number. The answer to the second riddle: He who makes it, has no need of it. He who buys it, has no use for it. He who uses it can neither see nor feel it. What is it? Is a coffin. But as to the first,  I'll have to think more on it. |
| Drugo10-08-03, 07:22 PM | Tell me, what stinks while living, but in death, smells good? It's a pig :) A pig stinks but a warm slice of ham with maple syrup doesn't |
| Drugo10-08-03, 07:41 PM | Three little ones Without voice, I scream Without wings, I fly Without theet, I bite Without mouth, I wisper Who am I? As hard as steel, but more flexible than a blade, i'm nothing more than a hole bound to other holes. What am I? I fall, but I never stand up. I come from the sky, and will get back one day. Who am I? |
| HrdCor10-08-03, 07:48 PM | The first is the wind. The second is a metal chain. Is the third the sun or moon? My riddles have been guessed correctly. |
| Drugo10-08-03, 07:49 PM | It's not the sun or the moon, but it's a nice awnser anyway. |
| HrdCor10-08-03, 07:52 PM | Hmmm, night falls.... but does it come back during the day? |
| Drugo10-08-03, 07:55 PM | It's something more physical than night. You can see it falling. |
| HrdCor10-08-03, 07:58 PM | Ha! Its snow! Did I get the other two? (Check my previous post.) |
| Drugo10-08-03, 07:59 PM | Yeah you have the two first right |
| HrdCor10-08-03, 08:04 PM | If it's not snow I give up and let better Halflings try. |
| Drugo10-08-03, 09:24 PM | Snow is a good awnser. The real one is "rain" but for that riddle it's the same thing. We can raise snow in many forms, but it can't stand up by itself so it's good too. |
| DanielTheHalfling10-14-03, 09:40 AM | Sorry for my extended abscence. http://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/dannyblush.txt As nothing was happening last week, I thought that the same general situation would be extended to this one. And good riddles, Tarken! For starters, that's more than enough to be added to this merry foundation! Your number is 21. Put it in your sig to show the world that you're proud to be a halfing! |
| HrdCor10-14-03, 11:09 AM | Excellent! |
| Y2Keevin10-14-03, 09:45 PM | Stupid question, but who has done mischief and mayhem with a Halfling character? My girlfriend's favorite story is the time she got a pair of punching daggers, and went and played patty-cake with Orcish kids. |
| Valthran10-15-03, 03:07 PM | Love the riddles, Unfortunately I have been pre-occupied of late, a rogues work is never done, so I have returned to the riddle fest a bit late. I mangaged to get a couple so there is hope I may be able to think in 'riddle' with some practice. As for halfling mayhem.....besides mayhem to someone elses larder, wine seller or valuables......hmmm I will give it a think. |

I did good'til I passed out. I found out lots' knowledge from the dwarves. My buddies at the Conservatoy should be happy. I'm talking about the Conservatoy of Ineffable Chord. My nickname is Maestro. Halflings are one of my favorite core races. I remember from back in 2nd ed. I had a fighter/psionicist. Took him down in the Night Below campaign. Man, that was fun. |

| JoyLynn11-20-03, 11:05 PM | OOOOH I think I know the answer, that one wasn't to E-asy. :D |

| DanielTheHalfling11-21-03, 06:10 PM | Emm, sorry, I don't play Ravenloft, so I can't try to do whatever you asked me to try. And by "ninja" I mean two fighter levels and the rest, monk levels, with a weapon selection of katana and shurinken and wearing bunny slippers of spider climbing. ---Daniel The Halfling http://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/dannymage.txt http://www.angelfire.com/moon/fallen_heart/Custom_Smileys/Requests/Koala_Animation.gif |
| Drugo11-21-03, 06:15 PM | Yeah, I'm going to try it someday... but not in Ravenloft lol. Maybe some rogue levels instead of fighter. Or at leat four level of fighter, for the Weapon Mastery. I will also try the halfling barbarian, with the small greatsword and the throwing axes. |
| Hodo11-22-03, 03:11 AM | Can I join? I usually play a halfling rogue/fighter of some kind. I can definatey say they're the funnest race to play all around. It's amazing the stuff they can manage to get away with. |
| Rabid_Halfling11-22-03, 04:50 AM | Woo I am in.. :bounce: *Doin' the happy dance* I tried doin' the monk class, but dang I can not play lawful anything characters.. To chaotic in heart to be that restrained..lol I do like the class of Cleric.. Knives of the Mother.. Assassin/Cleric.. mmm. |
| Drugo11-22-03, 10:30 AM | Halfling Bard is something that would be cool too. A bard specialised in riddles, stories and little cute songs. |
| Valthran11-26-03, 04:34 PM | Thanks for the information on the dictionary of Riddles Nice to see Halflings are still getting together. I haven't had time to pursue the boards lately but it appears some things have changed. I have always enjoyed the swapping of brief anecdotes of a character adventures and conversations as much as "on topic" discussion. I am not sure if this is still possible or allowed. Hope to share some times with you soon |
| Rabid_Halfling11-27-03, 07:40 PM | I am happy to be tight casted into the position of halfling rogue.. so simple and so chaotic.. lol |

I have always enjoyed the swapping of brief anecdotes of a character adventures and conversations as much as "on topic" discussion. I am not sure if this is still possible or allowed. Hope to share some times with you soon off-topic posts or casual chat/IC play in the wrong chatrooms For example: :w: out-of-character chat in designated in-character rooms :w: casual chat or non-combat play in designated combat-only rooms, or, conversely, combat play in non-combat rooms :w: casual chat or free-form role-play in designated structured rules/dice-based game rooms :w: at WizO discretion, off-topic chat or posts in topic-specific rooms/forums :w: card trade anywhere other than designated trading areas 2. Please do not roleplay as a character within a Foundation thread. This is considered a room disruption on most Wizard Community message boards. If you really want to roleplay on the Wizard Community boards, there are the Games: Chat boards which you can get to by clicking >>HERE<<. 4. Please keep all posts on the subject matter of the foundation. Recently, I’ve been seeing more post between members which has nothing to do with the subject matter of the thread. Please refrain from such off-topic posts. Putting it all together, I'd say that it's not allowable to just roleplay freely, nor act ICly. However, I'd also say that if what you're doing is readily applicable to the topic at hand, is used for an example, or something similar (ie, dragging your halfling character out from his hole, and making him give s peech on the topic that you're posting in regards to), would be alright. In other words, if it's not exactly roleplaying (starting some form of interactive story), and is relevent to the topic at hand, then it should be okay. So, in the context of the foundation, if one were to have thier halfling character give a view point on a certain matter, as something of a bit of added fun, there should be no problem, nor should there be any if someone responds in character, as long as it is also on topic, relevent to the disscussion at hand, and conforms to the code of conduct. Just think of instead of your character wandering into a room and talking with a bunch of other halflings, she's sitting at your computer, and posting something to a message board... Of course, this is just my opinion, but I've seen others do it (notably, Shemeska the Marauder and Primus, the One and the Prime). If it's really important, then a visit and question to the Meta-Boards should soon aliviate the concern. Now, to put my money where my mouth is (and incidently create a good situation for characters to be displayed, while (hopefully) sticking inside the guidelines), I have a question I'd like to put to the foundation: What does it mean to be Halfling? I've seen many halflings come in go, in novels, games, and in this foundation, and all seem to be rather happy and content, as well as willing thieves, and skilled tricksters. However, is this all there is to being a halfling? Makeing cracks about the size of the larger races, grabbing the gold, and living rich? For my answer, I submit my latest pair of halfling characters and their views on the matter. (These two are the reason this is a Foundation I wouldn't be joining. They're far too atypical of the standard halfling, and don't really get along well with others of thier race.) *sighs and digs around.* "Where are they... Ah! Here we go. Fisrt up is Beau Tosscobble, a lightfoot hin from Halurra. Step up to the platform and teel these nce people what being a halfling means to you.." "Uh, right... Hey! Wait a minute! I thought you said that there were just going to be humans here! No real people! Damnit, you know I can't... What? But... *sigh* A-alright..." "I'm Beau Tosscobble, and I'm a halfling. No, not a hin. That's what my people are called, but I am not one of them. I am merely a halfling. I'm supposed to tell you what it is to be a halfling, and I guess I'm more qualified than most of my kind, seeing as I've studied the hin my entire life. They-we... are a complicated, people, fond of the comforts of home, able to take pleasure in the littlest of things - a riddle, a well made sling, a comforting pipe at the end of a hard days work. But at the same time, we are more than that. Good natured as a whole, our race has a tendancy towards curiosity, always wanting to know whats over the next hill. This leads us on a never ending journey, packing house and home onto some carts, and heading off to see what happens next. "Of course, this takes some of us much more strongly than others. Most notably, the Strongheart hin have a tendancy to settle down and enjoy the simple things in life much more than the lightfeet - they rarely move from their own homesteds, far prefering the settled life to that of a nomad. Beyond that, I couldn't tell you too much about thier habits, and what it means to be one of them, because, frankly speaking, I'm not one of them. "What am I? It's not important. Now, anyways, others of our people have an even stronger drive towards curiousity. They leave behind the semi-nomadic settlement, and instead attempt to make thier own way in the world, seeking to find out truly new things, and experiance new peoples and new lands. They often find out that they're remarkably good at it. After all, from birht halflings are naturally athletic, running, jumping, and climbing everywhere, playing games like hide and seek, gathering small collections of what they consider valuble - even from under each other's nose. Not to mention all of the sling and throwing contests. In many ways, it's like out entire culture is designed to help us become true adventurers. At the very least, we're far more suited to the role than any other race, even the versitile humans. Of course, a halfling adventurer is often what others would call a rouge or even a thief. This is most balently untrue - though sometimes there are communal properties amoung our race, and though, whenever a halfling nations forms, it is almost always something of a benevolent anarchy, we do respect the property and belongings of others. It's just that we tend to be naturely gifted in that area, so when one of us goes bad (and, given how halflings are treated in some areas, it almost becomes a self fullfilling prophecy), we do it with a natural style and grace that leaves the other races astounded... "And, speaking of going bad... Some hin do go bad. Even to others of our race, they cross the line. Most often, this happens when one of the hin does something undescribable against another hin - murder, rape, stealing an item truly important to them... It's been known to happen. These hin are almost always of the sort whose curiosity leads them to become adventurers. Often, thier own love of the simple things that make life worth living has become diluted, or has never existed, and so they often become more like humans, elves, even dwarves - they become willing to perpetuate vile acts upon others of thier race, in exchange for nothing more than some form of material benefit, or mommentary pleasure. Often, too, they are turned away from the other communities of the hin and called Knaves, never again to co-exist with another halfling... They are never given the harshest of punishments, though, however, because no name entered into the Book of Names can be stricken from it's pages. No, this punishment is reserved for the children of these knaves - no priest would willingly enter the name of one so born into the boos, because to do so would be to invite the child of knaves...a knave among knaves, into the life of the villiage... Of course, this can doom these children to be all but soulless, if they're not willing to work doubly hard to gain the trust of a deity not of the... our pantheon... "*sigh* I think I'll go back now... talking about all this has gotten me depressed. Stupid bloody Hin..." Errr.... Thanks, Beau... I hope you have a good nap or something.... Now, anyways, I do have another one around here somewhere... I think he'll provide a decidedly diffrent view on things... Errrr... One sec... Horl... Where the heck... *checks under a small table and blaches*... holy crap... Horl stop doing that to the poor kitten and get out here, you've got a speach to make... And before you get any ideas with those knives, remember the shock collar... "All right. Stupid human. Anyways, I'm Horl Silentall. I'm a halfling. I really don't see the point of all this, c'ause being a halfling is a fairly simple proposition. People underestimat'chya. They see someone small and think that they're as defensless and harmless as a human whelp. It helps out alot, let me tell you... And the drop that condessending attitude real fast when they open the door to the next room and see what you've done to thier family... or when you've gotten a hand wrapped around one of thier vital organs. "Underestimation means power, in so many ways. They don't expect you to have any reall feelin's or emtions, and they tgreat you like a kid, but that's all the better, especially when your target lives in thier house. And of course, once you're done, you can allways burn the place to the ground as soon as the blood stops drainin' out of them. The only problem with that is some of them other halflings haev taken up the same plow, only they leave thier marks alive, and just steal a bunch of worthless loot, when it's sooo much better for them to just kill and run. Doesn't ruin our reputation as bein' all but kids, either... I'd just like to get my hands on one of those goody-two shoes who call themselves halflings, and show them a thing or two.. With my blades and some red hot irons... *Erk!*" Uh, thanks for that disturbing outlook on halfling life, Horl... Anyways, that's all for now, expect for some minor notes about these two... If I'm in the wrong here, and not interpereting things correctly, I wouldn't mind being told, so I can edit the IC bits out and away from this... _________________________________ Character notes for those who are interested (for some reason I always am...): Beau Tosscobble is a Lightfoot hin I'm running as a DM side character in my Forgotten Realms game (with only one player, I need to help out somehow). At the momment, he's a Rouge 4/Fighter 2/Bard 2/Warsling sniper 1/Invisble Blade 1/Shadowlord 1, with the shadowwalker template. Due to all the mulitclassing, he's fairly lacking in overall power compared to the rest of the party, and I kinda like him alittle bit to much, so he's gonna be leaving the group soon. Horl Silent all is a thug halflinf Berserker/Assasin in a hackmaseter game. Origionally, he was supposed to be a straight thief, but when rolling quirks and flaws for the character, he turned out to be a sadistic pyromaniac with a knife fetish. He was promptly stolen by the Gm, and now haunts his little brother's footsteps, as a throughly evil villian... |
| DanielTheHalfling11-28-03, 11:23 AM | Thanks for all the info, JoAT. To me, being "halfling" is simply being a hobbit that doesn't want to stay at home or who's home was burned for some reason or something like that. I just don't like all this "nomadic to justify adventuring" thing. I'm not degrading it. After all, I'm not the leader of the foundation. I just clicked the button "Start thread" before anyone else did.http://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/Smilies/dannybiggrin.txt And in this thread, all halflings have their place, but I don't like evil halflings much, but well, they're halflings after all... Oh, and Hodo you're in. As I said before, check the list out for your elf, I mean yourself, I'm too lazy... ---Daniel the Halfling http://www.geocities.com/daiel_g_13/Smilies/dannymage.txt http://www.angelfire.com/moon/fallen_heart/Custom_Smileys/Requests/Koala_Animation.gif |
| Valthran12-01-03, 07:00 PM | JoAt, a very interesting topic fleshed out by equally interesting characters. What is or does it mean to be a halfling. Describing a typical halfling is a bit like trying to describe a typical human as both races are extremely diverse yet to some extent the stereotype view of each race applies in some degree to its members. Perception of a race is shaped by how outsiders see the race, how members of the race see themselves and to some extent how the race percieves outsiders. Sometimes we define ourselves as much by what/who we are not as much as by who we are. For example Halflings are about three feet tall. From halfling perspective this is just the right size. Clothes, homes, chairs, weapons are properly proportioned when they are sized in this way From the human perspective three feet is child like, weak, worthy of dismissal. The halfling perspective of humans, humans are large, take up too much space, do not watch where they are going with their big feet, can be bullies or condescending even when they are not trying to be. Humans think it is fine to hunt bears, ogres and trolls using stealth, ambush and numbers but think it is cowardly if halflings do the same thing to them. Halflings are athletic able to climb and jump well for their size, blessed with excellent dexterity, keen hearing, and step quietly by nature but still only have the lifting ability of a small character. From a halflings perspective all these physical advantages are taken for granted. Juggling , tumbling, rock throwing (even without the +1 racial bonus) fine detailed work with their hands all come easily to a halfling. Problems a dealt with through cooperation and skill not brute strength. They flit from place to place quietly, possibly not seen because of their small size. To humans halflings might be underfoot or go unnoticed. They could be seen as puny, shirkers or get jokes like "how may Halflings does it take to......". Because of their small size their physical abilities might be interpreted as child like or furtive and sneaky Halflings may see humans as loud and clumsy as they lumber around the world. Halflings are hard to scare (+3 versus fear) but often prize family over material possessions. Walk a tight rope, take a bet, travel to new lands, take advantage of a new opportunity all might deter the faint of heart out of fear but not your average halfling. Yet dying for a few peaces of gold or a patch of dirt may make little sense if you aren't scared to find more someplace else. Human's may interpret these same traits as irresponsibility or child like invincibility. A human may see cowardice and successful intimidation where a halfling would see cutting your losses and good sense. Halfings live well into their second century. While not long lived compared to elves, halflings will maintain their youth and vigor much longer than their human friends. Live to fight another day, another opportunity will come around, take time to smell the roses will all have a different meaning to the average halfling than the humans around them. The lucky and skilled are often looked at with suspicion by those around them who are less fortunate. Add in a tendancy to travel, to be the new group in town plus speak a different language and you may attract even more suspicion. Outside of their own communities halflings are likely to experience many of these issues whether they are the archetypical rogue wanderer, or a barbarian sorcerer who has never left their home village. So while we halflings may be quite different there is also much which makes us the same. |
| Valthran12-03-03, 02:05 PM | In Meta game sense my view of 'what is a halfling' is shaped by a various of things, with Tolkien being only a minor influence. The first edition racial statistics have a lot to do with how I see halflings as this is when I first met and fell in love with the race. From the racial abilities table a halfling character needed the following MINIMUM abilities: strength-- 6 Intellingence-- 6 wisdom-- 3 Dexterity-- 8 Constitution-- 10 Charisma-- 3 Thus with a -1 to strength (1st ed) they could not be as strong as the stongest human, but a halflings racial minimums certainly made the average halfling stronger, tougher, more dexterous, and smarter than the average human character. Which is why I have always seen the halfling race as athletic and smart. The fact that in first edition the only class a halfling could take with no level restrictions was the thief also shaped my tendancy to pick halfling character with at least a bit of the rogue in their personality. But back then the monster manual listed halflings as lawful good, so I have always seen the race on the whole as a fairly peaceful hard working group. I guess I have always seen a halfling as similar to a cat. They like their comfort and warmth but if they have a reason to move they are athletic, inquisitive, lucky, and deadly for their size. Since rediscoverying D&D in 3rd edition and now 3.5 I also find I enjoy the race as currently described including the forgotten Realms and the Realms halfling Pantheon, but thats just me. |
| Rabid_Halfling12-03-03, 04:46 PM | Lol.. i have to laugh at my current DM.. He doesn't realise the possibilities of halflings.. Very sad, i mean he is good, but for some reason he has always thought of halflings as raw fish eaters and jeez, anything.. I set out to prove all DM worldwide (if possible) that halflings tho weak in strength ( by human standards)are best of all worlds, the smoke pipeweed, eat, and are good natured and free spirited.. everything everybody on the most part wanted or wants to do.. Stats be damned.. my current rogue, Derris has a strength of 17, but guess what, it isn't human standards it is halfling standards.. people always mix this up, I mean a dwarf might have a charisma penalty, but what about other dwarves??? or strength with halfling.. D&D has to fix that problem.. it sets in stereotypes, almost racism.. literal racism.. biases to demi-humans.. I am a proud player of halfling, and honestly would love to be a real one.. So to all who dis the littleman, beware for they may yet prove too much to handle.. lol.. Reeeagh! So sayeth the Rabid halfling...:pile: |

| Thayde Rythylaynne12-14-03, 10:13 AM | To: Faerun weapons’ masters In the dark time ahead that we will face together as good peoples, it is the warriors, knights, and weapons masters that will be our front line against the forces of evil. Their blades, staves, and arrows will be meaningless without, valor, bravery, and good moral judgment. In the light of this I am creating a martial school in the backyard of Thay to fight the evils of Faerun. I am also calling on representatives of all of the good deities of Faerun who specialize in combat, tactics, martial prowess, self-perfection, honor, defense, war, and combat knowledge to come and represent the best qualities of your faith, and have a voice in how this school will conduct its defense of, and offense for the good peoples of Faerun. I am calling on Dwarven, Elven, Gnomish, Halfling, and Human representatives to come together for a singular purpose, with similar abilities, and without racial prejudice. This school will not turn away a good hearted individual on the basis of race, be he or her, human, drow, half-orc, or any other. To me purity of heart and deed are more important than historical racial prejudices. Disputes between represented faiths will not be tolerated. If you cannot abide by these simple rules, please send another of your faith. This is your opportunity to show to the rest of your faith and your deity, why you have chosen your life’s path, and also to exemplify a follower of your chosen deity. There will be thirteen represented faiths. The list includes: Clangeddin Silverbeard, Haela Brightaxe, Corellon Larethian, Eilistraee, Gaerdal Ironhand, Avoreen, Anhur, Helm, Lathander, Oghma, The Red Knight, Tempus, and Tyr. Our school is in need of instructors who want and opportunity to affect life outside of their normal arena. We are looking for warriors, paladins, clerics, monks, and rangers, whom have chosen a specific fighting style and mastered it. You may come yourself or send a representative. Your sect is the first of your faith to receive such a letter from me. Should you decline I will be sending letters to other sects of your faith to give them this opportunity. My intent is to have the best. If you know of someone that you think will be interested in this opportunity, please forward this letter to him or her. Our training grounds are being built in Escalant on the Wizard’s Reach, in the southern portion of the Aglarond peninsula, on the northeast shore of the Sea of Falling Stars. The earliest representatives to answer this call will be involved with the planning, and strategic, and tactical build-out of our school. The name of our school is Swordpoint. There is only room enough for one representative per faith. May you find this letter with a good heart, and open eyes. Swift Journey, Thayde Rythylaynne |

Fear the wee folk, fear the chastising from those more apt to do something much less heroic than yourselves, like eating, or smoking, we tend to have a passion for such things, but enough... such trickery will not be rewarded, though you may tempt me with some fine ale and perhaps a bite of that sandwich you have there, we shall not be denied our rights. One: the right to a bite of that sandwich your holding. Two: shorter bathroom facilities, and fer gosh sakes remember to flush, others use the lou too ya know Three: we are still waiting for that sandwich, times wasting. | Drugo01-07-04, 05:59 PM | Hey hey, the crazy little one is back :) I tried yesterday the ultimate druid halfling combo, to replace my dead character (dwarf rogue). Lvl 8, Str 12, Dex 18, Con 15, Int 9, Sag 19, Cha 16, with a +1 sling (+11/+11/+6 with rapid shot) and a dire wolf as a mount and animal companion. The feats I took are Nature spell (a rhinoceros able to cast Bull's Strenght or to call lightning is something you're not to forget when you cross it's path), Point blank shot and rapid shot, and the classical Combat casting. Now that I have my computer back I can read you again guys :-D |

| Valthran01-07-04, 07:07 PM | Drugo, I like your character description. How are you getting all of those attacks with a sling when it takes a MEA to load?? I ask because I would like to do similar things with my halfling rogue. |
| Drugo01-07-04, 07:44 PM | Lol you're right. I didn't made any full-round attack yesterday so I didn't bother with it. With the DM approbation, it's still possible with three slings previously loaded and Quick Draw. But it sounds weird to me. But three slings hooked on the shield can do it. But I absolutly forgot the MEA thing... guess the DM will allow me to change at least the Rapid Shot... maybe for Far Shot, which is still a similar feat. After all, the base slingshot range is very short. Thanks for the precision  |
| Valthran01-08-04, 01:45 PM | Multiple preloaded slings.....now there is an interesting idea. An ordinary sling costs next to nothing and weighs next to nothing. Given time to anticipate combat, such as an ambush, I could see my halfling rogue holding three or four extra slings to get though the surprise round and next couple rounds and it won't cost me anymore feats. I'll have to run this by my DM Thanks for the idea |
| Drugo01-08-04, 01:56 PM | Hehe np In my campain, one of the players wanted to play a crossbow specialist. He took Quick Draw, and a lot of craft(crossbow-making). His combat style: First round, attack with an heavy crossbow, MEA to dispose of the crossbow without breaking it. Second round, draw his two hand crossbow (rapid shot feat to shot with the second one in low levels). Not caring about breaking them. And the rest of the combat is made with a standart light crossbow. Halfling, of course. A matrix-style halfling... But it's the same idea, a lot of pre-loaded crossbows. I don't know what it could have looked like, because he changed his mind and played a human sorcerer. |
| Rabid_Halfling01-08-04, 02:47 PM | Actually, with 3.5e, how does the sling work.. I am so frustrated at the damage system now.. I reerve my halfling for traps and such.. Thought the halfling greatsword is a neat idea.. lol |
| Valthran01-08-04, 07:09 PM | Well in 3.5 a halfling sized sling will: Do 1d3 damage range increment 50 Let you add your strength bonus to damage (no need for mighty sling) Takes a move action to load (with 2 hands) which provokes AoO +1 to hit if you are a halfling Ways to increase damage: Increase your strength Throw enchanted ammunition... my rogue/cleric carries scrolls of magic stone...especially good for undead See if your DM will give you a racial proficiency in Halfling war sling. It gives 1d6 damage I believe plus you can skip your rocks at adjacent targets within 5ft. My complaint about the sling was that there was no way to overcome the move action to load (unlike the crossbow) but you have solved that problem for me |
| Drugo01-08-04, 07:29 PM | I'd house rule a feat for the quick reload of the sling. The MD of the game with my halfling druid too, but finaly I dropped Point blank shot and Rapid shot. He allowed me to use my spear as a quarter staff too, because it's free and it can be virtually any long piece of wood, so I dropped my shield as well, and took Two-weapon fighting and Two-weapon defence. I don't remember the english name of that spell (I speak french) but I'm thinking about the low-level spell that enhance any staff or club. It will be deadly. |
| Santini01-10-04, 01:29 AM | I'd like to join this noble group... By way of introduction, my name is Francis Santini -- but most people call me "Squeak" (I am also known as "The Rabbi" because of my proficency with a knife) By profession, I am a rogue/ranger and a hater of all things tall. While I do have a penchant for husky Dwarven women, my fondest love is tracking down sticking it to one of them huummaan types. I don't hate all humans now, mind you -- just those that are over 5 feet tall.... Many thanks for establishing this foundation - it is good to have a group of peers to be able to chat over an ale and ridicule those stupid dubblings... I mean honestly - with their heads so high off the ground, it is obvious that the blood doesn't circulate through their brain, right?? Great to be with a group of right-heighted folks... |
| Rabid_Halfling01-12-04, 10:10 AM | Thanks fer the info.. gads, i wish the damages were not so size-biased.. :( I mean it was fine the last time..oh well.. again thanks fer the info..:D |
| Drugo01-12-04, 10:35 AM | Yeah, the size-based damage completly destroyed my concept (gnome barbarian). But halfling rogues still rock :) |
| Rabid_Halfling01-12-04, 10:45 AM | The thought of a Halfling greatsword is neat especially for humans a long sword that does 1d10 damage or so.. loophole..lol |
| Drugo01-12-04, 10:55 AM | But they suffer a -4 penalty because of the handle and the overall balance. |
| Mighty Halfling01-22-04, 10:22 AM | Please note this thread of halfling interest .... First we had Halfling riding dogs ... (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=169248) |
| Rabid_Halfling01-22-04, 10:30 AM | I was wondering is thereany info for Pennig's.. the Halfling pony?? I am tired of the whole riding dogs.. I know they were discussed in the 2ed MM, yet they never mentioned them at anytime after.. or a link with a printable version of the info.. thanks bunches:D |

| shirerat01-30-04, 08:18 PM | I too would like to join this order of perian, I being a halfling player my entire dnd career. I play Rattus teabottle the paladin/ purple dragon knight. Rattus is from a small halfling community in a great forest( which is actualy a colony from the vale of the small), he travels with a group of elves and has just recently fought in a great elven battle. Please let me join. |
| Valthran02-03-04, 02:24 PM | How do you see the make up of most halfling communities?? Generally they are described as semi permanent residents of an area who tend to travel as individuals or large family groups as opportunity presents it self. This description lends itself to a couple of different type of groups 1) the unskilled migrant worker (Commoner): Pick crops, dig ditches, fetch and carry for road construction or other capital projects 2) skilled workers: tanners, jewlers, wagoneers, candle makers etc. The Dragon issue on halfling life that describes young halflings going to job fairs to choose and be chosen by a professional for an apprenticeship would support the second option. The halfling limitation on strength and size for carrying ability would also support a more professional skill approach to labor. Is a halfling community mostly made up of skilled workers or commoners? A community made up of skilled workers will have a populace with a better average ability to wear armour and weapon selection than a community made up of commoners What do you think?? |
| Rabid_Halfling04-28-04, 02:19 PM | I see a shire, as a extended family, almost everyone is related either by birth or marriage. You will have the troublemakers, (ie merry or pippen) who do nothing for the community. but are tolerated /if not loved. You will have the farmers/smithies, who keep the community fed and protected. also including the guards. and right now that would be it.. |
| Ouroboros04-29-04, 12:03 PM | And a group of dwarves who gona take one with them as there personal thief right? ;) |
| thimble10-13-04, 05:45 PM | Hello all! I'd like very much to be added to this foundation. Out of curiosity has anyone tried playing a halfling cleric NOT of Yondalla or her pantheons? I'm currently about to play a Halfling raised by humans (his adopted mother was a very high priestess of Pelor). He is a high level cleric of Pelor as well. I think a halfling raised by humans would be a very challenging but rewarding experience. |
| Silmarien Aldalome10-13-04, 06:50 PM | Hi there Thimble Welcome! Ain't heard of such a cleric - tell us more. I like the idea of the Halfling/human rearing. It would be a struggle, possibly for the fella. Imagine going to school where you're half the size of the big aggro humans. Unless it was a small community, with humane values, and good care. Not to mention the adoption issues. Poor tacker would have a hard time to start off. We're discussing an inter-foundtion game at the Interfoundation Games Prep thread. Come along, and meet the crew. I'll make sure you're welcomed Stav (GM) |
| Valthran10-15-04, 12:21 PM | Interesting idea...my halflings are all part of the same extended family, sort of like the Sacketts for you western lovers out there. Anyways back on topic... Your situation brings up the whole nature vs nuture arguements. How much contact with halflings did your character have while growing up? What bonuses or abilities are genetic and which learned? Bonus to fear genetic or a behavior trait learned by interacting with other halflings?? +1 luck bonus to saves genetic or a learned survival trait. Strongheart halflings no bonus and lightfoots with bonus could suggest culture or a survival trait selected out in the group that travelled more. +1 bonus to thrown weapons.....is because they practice all the time as part of the halfling culture as opposed to the dexterity bonus which is genetic though practice likely is also important. When you take the individual out of their culture how many of their racial traits do they keep or get new ones instead that match the group they are growing up with??? |
| Valthran10-25-04, 02:29 PM | Attention all halfling lovers, Recently a great series by Dennis L. Mckiernan has been brought to my attention. His Iron Tower trilogy and other books of Mithgar are excellent. His Warrow aren't quite D and D halflings but sure are close cousins to the DnD halfling and Tolkein's Hobbits. Better yet his Warrow characters are interesting and relevent to the story besides as victims or comic relief. And wait thats not all, the whole series has just been re-issued so you don't have to search for old copies. If your DM doesn't believe halflings are relevent or can only be seen as pests lend him/her a copy of one of these books |
| Need_A_Life04-15-06, 04:09 PM | "I'll join this noble endeavour, if you will have me," I'm having a blast playing a Vow of Poverty Halfling Monk (intending to be the greatest mage-slayer ever!). He's lawful to the bone, going against every stereotype of halflings. Before that I played a Halfling Wildmage Sorcerer, that was also funny. I was the 'weakest' member of the group, but I actually managed to pull a stunt that silenced the entire group. Facing this epic outsider who is dealing ~80 damage per attack, he holding his ground against the other five in the group. I am doing close to no damage against him (all in all he has taken ~100 damage (total) in 2 rounds). I am looking through my spell list for anything that might help and come upon Polymorph Any Object. I flip open Players Handbook and read the spell, then with a smile on my lip I wait for my turn to come up. DM: "So, what do you do?" Me: "Polymorph Any Object. I'll make him a big fat toad" Another PC: "But he's not an object" Me (reading spell): "Target: Any object or creature" Another PC: "Ok" DM: "Save?" Me: "Not unless you consider him an object" DM: *confused* "As opposed to...?" Me: "A creature" DM: "He's a creature" Me: "No save, no spell resistance. Duration.... 1 week. And he assumes the intelligence score of a toad." *Silence* *laughter* |
