Huzzah and welcome! Don't let the title fool you: we allow people with sigs off all shapes and sizes in here.

As you can probably tell, this foundation is all about Sigs. Ah, the sig. The window to your soul. After all: tone doesn't translate well across the internet, so what better way to set it than to attach a sample to every post?

First, let's set some ground rules:

This foundation is about signatures, commonly called "sigs." If you wish to discuss something other than sigs, please take it to PM (or start another thread). It's not that you don't have something interesting to say but that this thread is already borderline off-topic and we don't want it to overload.
Basically, we'll be talking Content and Formatting. Content is, IMO, more fun, but good formatting can give your sig more oomphf.
We'll also have a special assignment sometime in the near future: the formation of a standardized responce to heckling. In other words, a parapgraph that members (or anyone) can Cut->Paste to respond to "Your sig is too long!"s. It will be informative, polite, and funny. Or so I hope.
As usual, follow the CoC. We won't have numbers, nor will we have ranks. No one member is more important than any other. You may, however, have a title. We prefer humourus titles, so no puns ;). If you want a title, PM me about it.
If you want to discuss someone's specific sig, please do so In blue. And don't forget to include their name.
Of course, there will be roleplaying. Do that In red. I'll explain more about this below.

Thats pretty much it for now. Have fun!

RolePlaying Premise
It was a dark and stormy mid-morning and the horse-draw cart pounded across the rickety bridge. The driver, a youngish half-elf, cursed as the wheels hit a bump, frantically trying to keep the cart upright. He had been traveling for hours through this downpour, desperate to find the fabled portal that the townspeople had said was just a few hours away.

After crossing the bridge, he stopped the horses for a moment and took out the map.

"Now let's see," he said. "If that's the bridge, then the portal should be just on the other side of this hill."

He quickly tucked the map away and set off. Moments later, he had reached the top of the hill and saw it: a circle of light set against the dark back ground. He took out a few instruments, checked them, and then laughed.

"I've found it! I've finally found it!"

Wasting no time, he urged the horses on. At first, they were reluctant to enter the hole, but after chucking a few carrots through, they went right on in.

On the other side was the Demiplane of Words. Spinning around its landscape, the half-elf could see many stories race across his vision. Most of them were mere phrases, barely long enough to fit on a slip of paper. Some, however, loomed over the others.

Days later, the half-elf had finished his job. After unpacking his things, he forced the Demiplane to bend to his will, changing its hills and valleys, causing it to move at his whim. Finally, after nearly all of his arcane might had been expended and he needed to trance, he used the last of his spells to call in a forest to surround the buildlings he had created, and with the forest he brought animals.

Feeling like a god, he rested. His Great Library of Signatures had been completed, and now he had to but wait for fellow enthusiasts to arrive.

Enjoy!

[GM-Voice]OK - you do have clear on-topic standards. But, this one is a "line-ball", for me. I think it could be a lot of fun and it may help for us all not to get too serious here at Guild House. I think we need the humourous dimensions you bring at Guild House to make it fun.

But - I don't speak for the other two GM's and WizO's. So - *if anyone has a problem - bring it to the Pit of Nine Hells Thread for fleshing out.

Be welcome though - and congratulations on the initiative.

Warm Regards

...and thence, there was a great Wyrding that was brought forth - verily, a literal vomiting of endless words from the Demi Plane of Words.

And lo! The Sister of Words was born - from the Nine Layers of Smily Hell. The Smilies raised their eyes and an evil coded message appeared before the eyes of those from the Demiplane of words - for building Signatures.

:behold: :)

With great cunning, the Master Arcanist incanted a great Spell: Comprehend Smilies and understood that the message read:

Ward the Great Eye, and smile at your fear, for thence the Great Eye's anger will turn to Angel Wings and improve your temper.

She heas Jaceofwater's question - and sees he/she is stuck on the mnemonic verse of the twelfth reflexive frame of the Incantrix Polarisation component of spell casting i.e. - quasi gobbledygook about "how" Mythal casters talk to each other at meetings. For the ancient Elf has partaken of High Elven Magic - and has verily channelled from the Demiplane of Words many a time.

The gnome attempted unsuccessfully to peer through the foliage to locate his target. The old man had told him it was there, but then the directions weren't very specific. The gnome tried climb a tree, but this too failed when he annoyed an unhappy group of ants. He sighed.

"Why must I always do things the hard way?"

After another seeming few hours of half-hiking, half-crawling through the thick umbrage, he believed he spotted it. Quickening his pace, he soon learned that he had indeed spotted his destination.

"The Great Library of Signatures!" he gasped to himself.

Entering meekly, he called out, "Hello? Is anybody here?" He saw a man, no, a elf-man, who asked of his business.

"I seek the Great Library." he nigh whispered.

The half-elf smiled warmly at him, and he knew he was home at last.

Ok, it's not quite at the "long" point yet, but I don't know how to make it all small, so it's gonna get too big too soon. How do I make it small?

"To reduce the size of your signature, that is, to fit a large amount of infomoration into a smaller amount of space is to be a polite poster. Therefore, place the following magic words around your sig and it shalt be happily shrunken to a nice, portable size."

Short and sweet, that should be the way of the sig. Too long and 99% of everyone won't bother to read it even once - which makes it pointless.

And making it size=1 - that's just increasing its unreadability, especially with resolution set to 1024x768.

If I kept simply adding words of wisdom to my sig rather than rotating three quotes, it would be rather needlessly bloated by now.

The moody looking librarian (moody because her hair-bun is too tight and it pulls annoyingly at her face) greets the gnome - whose excitment causes the librarian's consternation.

The moody librarian says "...I see you seek the Secret of Shrinking - a very high level spell, that the ancient Arcanists use to shrink their spells' words, so that more could fit onto a page".

She gestures, and grabs the foot-stool and says "follow me please" - as she - again tightens her hair bun (she likes being moody and irritable). You are lead through the ancient warrens of the libraray, and sconce light flickers off the walls.

She grabs a tome - it says

Thanking both the half-elf and the librarian, the gnome stumbled along the passageways of the library, searching for a way to further the library's goals. He knew they needed a variation of the Magic Mouth spell for when the mockers of the library began to, well, mock the library. But where to begin...?

Startled at the voice coming from behind, the gnome accidentally dropped about ten pounds of books on his toes.
"OW!" He screamed in agony. "Don't sneak up on people like that!"
He then continued to search round the shelves, util he had found the correct scroll.
"This is a scroll of Google (http://www.google.com). To use it, simply tell it to look for quote from a favorite author, poet, or other person or place. Observe.

Placing the scroll on a table, the gnome spoke in a firm voice saying, "Star Wars Quotes," and in a matter of seconds the writing on the scroll changed to reveal a long listing of things resembling the words "Star", "Wars", and "Quotes". Touching one of the words brought up by the scroll, the writing changed yet again to "Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid." The gnome then waved a hand over the scroll and it returned to its original state.
"Now you try," he said, smiling at the necrite.

The librarian is pleased - so she tightens her hair buns yet further...*ahh* she berates herself and pulls tightly. "That's better" she snaps at noone.

Suddenly, there is a brisk cold breeze, and the library sconces are blow out. But rather than being perplexed or frightened, the Moody Librarian is merely annoyed. Like she is when she finds books out of order on shelves, or whenever she's asked a question, has to light the sconces (or blow them out for that matter).

With pursed lips she looks at the Magic Mouth, whose eerie tones spill lore from strange and far away places. Suddenly, the mouth sounds, naming prophesy from a far away future.

As for a topic may I suggest:

What do you personally belive sigs are used for and what purpose is used most on these boards?

I personally think that sigs are used best to describe ones self.

As in my sig - I tell I am in the half-elf, harper and CoA. I say I am a self-proclaimed "High Priest of the ever diplomatic Silm" or somthing like that stating I like silms way of dealing with people. I also tell about my very different interests. As of now with my GodFather quote I am showing my interest in my "heritage" as I like to call it, or rather the Mafia. I am personally sicilian and my best friend has people on both sides of the mob, those shooting guns and those getting shot at.

what do you all think?

Hi Ho Frostbite_Ravenheart! I like you're interpretations.

The Moody Librarian, whose name is Angst-rianna Irritibalia looks at Frostbite, Blaine, Melles, and DaTedinator and the gathering throng, pawing over Signature Tomes. She hears their hushed whispers in the Library - and her pursed lips purse even more tightly. She walks over to the ruccous table in a rapid series of very short-lengthed steps.

She overhears them speak "....smilies....badgers....." in wide-eyed wonder and "the Library of Signatures - but what's it actually for?"

Her pupils narrow into dots - and she snaps (moodily) ;)

"The signature serves many functions. The Demiplane of Words is a coveted Lore - that provokes jealousy amongst the Mages and Diviners of Realmspace." she looks around warily as she hisses "..but don't take my word for it." as she hands you another book. This one is titled

The Signature and Its Many Uses in Realmspace

As you open the Tome it reads "For those in need of Powerful Abjurations to defend the Signature Movement.

Donations to Library welcome....

I did not get that PM, but I'll put you down as the Priest guy. :D

The doorbell rings.

"Don't worry, I'll get it."

Blaine walks over to the portal and swings open the freshly-painted door only to find a huge mob waiting on the threshhold.

'Is this the 'Great' Library of Signatures?" said an angry-looking man with a nose pointed skyward.

"It is," said Blaine, quizzingly. "How can I help you?"

"We're here to tear this abomination down!" the pointy-nosed man said to a cheer from the mod. "We don't think that Sigs should be allowed. No more than 5 lines!"

At which point the mob began chanting various slogans, some of which are too vulgar to get past the filter. Blain quickly slammed the door shut and Arcane Locked it.

"Quickly! We need a counterslogan!"

In short, I'm kicking off that Special Assignment I mentioned in the 1st post: we need to come up with a short-and-sweet message with which we can opine against those pesky posters who wail about "excessive" sig length (which is, of course, impossible. Sigs, by definition, can never be excessive! ;) ). The rules are fairly simple (and haven't changed from the 1st post): all submissions must be informative (so they get the point accross), polite (so as not to break the CoC), and funny (so as to be funny). Its probably best if they are pithy, but longer rebuttles are acceptable.

Silmarien Aldalome already came up with one some posts ago: "Angst about long-sigs is better spent on solving the problems of mood. Happy moods make for greater tolerance."

Have fun!
Silmarien Aldalome

"Quickly! We need a counterslogan!"

When Angstrianna Irritablia sees the Angry Looking Man - she is *very* pleased - which means of course that she is free to enjoy her very bad mood all the more.

She snaps at the man "yes - it's not the first time the Library of Signatures has been threatened. The Laws on Line Limits - mean that we have less space to make our point to the Most Resistant Ones - beings of terrible power from the Far Away Plane of Anti-Words."

At which point she (again) tightens her hair bun - and also her resolve.

The Chapter in Tome in front says "the Many Uses of Signatures"

To know how to defuse Signature Angst (Angstrianna reads) one must first Name the Angst. Thence, one must understand the Origin of the Angst. And from this - one can formulate a Remedy to the Angst.

First - there are the various kinds of attacks that are aimed at Sigs to consider:

1. to belittle.
2. to deride.
3. to ignore.
4. to sideline.

Then - you must decide "what" you want to achieve in your Sig in response. Here are some ideas

1. To diffuse Angst with Humour. (at which point Angstrianna *again* tightens her bun and mumbles "never")
2. To express part of your identity.
3. To assert a Truth.
4. To enlighten.
5. To Invite.

There are many more options - can you think of any yourself?

There is a sudden gasp as you discover this:

"If you think this Signature is an Eye Sore - have your eye-sight checked. Eye-sores are in the eyes of the beholder :behold: "

Bang! Bang!!! BANG!!! Through the wall next to the door walks in a cleric, or at least one would think, and asks to help with the library. "Seeing the mess on this floor, it looks like you could use the help." He sets about fixing it up, making it slightly less dusty. "I am hear four learning mour about the puns of DnD. By definition, a signature is no more than a person's name. ;)

But really, there comes a point when a signature is no longer useful as reading material for the general public (and this includes any signature that is made up largely of tiny, nigh unreadable text) and becomes merely a scrolling chore (as you have to scroll past it to get to the next post) - it is at this point that a signature has become excessive. (Of course, if signatures offer some indication of personality, such a sig could indicate the poster is needlessly long-winded.)

But really, complaining about such signatures on these boards is pointless when you can fix the problem yourself if it bothers you by going into your User CP and cutting the number of lines down to a more tolerable sum (which I'm doing again now, as my tolerance for scrolling past worthless lines of text waxes and wanes). Conversely, if the complaints bother you you have the option of limiting your own signature length to a less linguistically Bacchanal size. Retaliatory commentary, however, won't solve anything.

Thanks, Frosty... I try to keep them short but meaningful, and I rotate them as the mood strikes me (soon I should replace the "Skip the Sage" line with something more interesting).

I'm delighted when I catch a snippet of the lyrics to an interesting song I've never heard of in someone's sig, or a quote that strikes me just so, or even occasionally a link to an interesting article or website. But really, most posters' actual posts tend to be more interesting to me than their signatures...

Angstrianna nods (moodily) to herself as Tenzhi speaks.

"Yes Elf-Bane!" she snaps merrily "The Great Library of Signatures contains *all* Lore for both Long & Short Signatures." She looks around the Table "There are no "rights" about a Signature's length. And no "wrongs" either - just ideas.

Your Signature is as is your wOnt.

Ask yourself what is it you wish to achieve with your signature?" She flicks the pages of a Tome with deft, sharp hand movements as she purses her lips....

I would only spell it "Dokter" if I were Dutch. But if we're going to discuss spelling (and because I relish the opportunity to construct the truly ridiculous sentence that will soon follow): contextually speaking, it's not "its" it's "it's".

The Psion Consulted his map, everything seemed in place, he took the flight spell 40,000 above the lost forest, and then go 40,000 feet straight down. Yes... everything was going according to plan. He let go of the map, and it flew straight up, rather, it fell much slower than the psion.

"Crap, now how am I supposed to find this library-thing that I'm looking for"

He thought hard, if he remembered correctly, he was about 35,000 feet away from the library. After several short calculations, he was elated to discover that at his current rate, he would be there in just under three minutes. Why, this is faster than a monk!

Then a Synapse fired

"Oh Hell" He said to no one in particular

Two minutes and 28,000 feet later, he was racking himself trying to figure out how to get out of the present situation. "But I don't want to waste any pp..." he thought to himself

somewhere around Minus 2,000 feet, he saw a bright blip of what, to him, appeared to be a mob of protesters gathering outside of a library for the catalogueing of Inordinatly Long Sigs whining about sig length, but that was just to him.

At minus 500 feet, he got the idea. He pulled his sig from his bag of holding and held it before him. It crashed through the ceiling and smashed into the ground before collapsing and expanding like an accordian, but making a more enjoyable noise. The Psion Lay Wobbling on top of it. He rolled off and stood up. "I'M FREAKING AWESOME!" He shouted, to all within earshot.

He looked around, nearly everyone was surprised, hadn't they seen a Mentalist crassh through the ceiling using a pile of words as a cushion before?

He Stood up and, without provocation, said, "Who am I? I'm King of Eleventy Gates, Resident Whackjob and total Hack!"

"No one asked" A voice from somewhere said

Koeg grumbled and sat down, next to his sig, which was teetering dangerously.

As for the Counterslogan, hows about "Its the size that matters! Not how you use it!"

'' In a desertic land there was a tribe living next to the mountain of the sigs. The huge mountains was a mystery to the illiterates living next to it. And there he was. The literate sorcerer. And Joe the barbarian asked him ' But why do you want to be literate'' And the literate sorcerer told him. ''Because i will be the first to read the mountain of the sig'' And he read it . And the mountain told him of a Library of the sig. Thus the literate sorcerer went to the library. But there was a mob. And using the rules of Book 3.0 he used a second level spell to duplicate a third. And he came into the library. And he witnessed a sight to behold. Sigs left and right. Up and down. And he was in awe. But he declared '' I AM CIMRIC, RULER OF TWELVE KINGDOM AND AN ANT NEST''. And then he heard '' Shut up you arrogant snake'' And he shutted up''

From his perch in the tree the ranger watched the man fall. It was an odd sight indeed. For some time now he had been tracking the literate sorcereror and his barbarian friend. He wanted to know more of this sig library and what secrets it held. He climbed down from the tree and hoped upon a celestial dog. "We are close pony, soon we will know the secrets of the sig, and how they are responsible for holding together all the planes of exsitence. This had to be true, because only something as diverse as the "sig" could be cabable of maintaing the balance between all the unique planes. And as the greatest planar ranger ever, i need to know how this is done....." the ranger continued to babble about everything sig and planes related, and the dog tried its best to zone him out. The only thing greater than Olin Furryfoots love of sigs and planes, was his love of his own voice.
For several more hours he fallowed the trail, until he came upon the secret library.

And ever so quitly the ranger entered........

"OMG!!!! HOW MANY OF YOU ARE HERE?? I THOUGHT THIS DAMN THING WAS SUPPOSE TO SOME SECRET OR SOMETHING? WAS THERE A SIGN I MISSED, OR DID YOU ALL BY MAPS AT THAT VILLAGE OR SOMETHING BACK THERE?"

Decided i should enter the library. i wanted to contribute more to the foundation, more than JUST being a member, anyway.

And who would you be?'' and once again you all can hear '' shut up you arrogant snake'' And he shutted up

Olin examined the motley bunch of sig enthusiast and was pleased. "I can tell by all your respected sigs that you are all great people of great personality, and i think i will like my stay here very much. I pride my self on two things: My sig, and the Planes. I have come here in search of information on the demiplane of words, and i know if there is info on it anywhere, its here. I fallowed that sorceror there because i lack the ability to read mountain (i coulda put point into a language skill, but i wanted a more badass survival check!;)) So, if anyone can point me to your section on the planes i would be much obliged. dont mind pony, he's house trained, and did any of you notice the mob outside, by chance? i came in the side door, didnt want to have to push my way through all of them....being half there size and all... i aint no idiot, i watch the news, i saw what happened to those people at that concert, i dont wanna be trampled to death! Any way, nice to meet you all!"

After being pointed to the correct section, Olin sat down with a good book about the demiplane of words and kept his ear to the conversation at hand, whatever that might be.

A high-pitched screech fills the library, and everyone's eyes lift to the rafters. For awhile nothing happens, but then a tiny, greasy rat with malevolent eyes and ridiculous pink butterfly wings flutters down. "Fear me! I am Heckler, the imp of half-baked ideas and offensive opinions!" After the initial shock wears off, Heckler continues: "I come to reject long signatures! I will reduce your pathetic library to random sentences that I can heckle with impunity! Once your library stands in ruins, my power to debate that which I know nothing about will stand unchallenged by lengthy, organized argument! Verbosity will not prevail!

Olin watched the wierd looking creature fly around the room, ranting and raving about long signatures. But soon the thing became quite dull, and he could see no reason for it to remain in the library. From a quiver strapped to his back Olin produced a javelin, and with a practiced fluidity from years of expierience Olin launched the javelin at he creature, nailing it, and sending it to the ground. The halfling ranger went to the dead imp thing, removed it from his weapon, and tossed it to Pony, who quickly gobbled it up. After cleaning off the javelin Olin looked to the others gathered in the library and continued, "So, where were we?"

What's this you see - is it a tiny shift in the pouty cross disposition - perhaps even a very frosty smile. But a smile nonetheless - which for Angst-rianna is an event as rare as a grand conjunction of nine planets.

She looks at the library of Signatures - and nods approvingly, before humfing and marching off officiously, stacking books on shelves and peering between shelves at passers by.

From a small lecture hall, little more than a converted broom closet, really, one can barely hear, and only if they take the time to listen to the silence between the collected wisdoms, a soft voice. What would one hear if they waded through that run-on sentence and stepped closer? The mysteries of the universe? Whether MDJ was really evil or just a joke perpetuated by the game designers? How to properly punctuate it's and its?

No, most likely it'll be a lone gleep muttering on to a small audience about the importance of sigs of reflection. Something like this:

"A sig of reflection is remarkable in that it shows ones character through the character of others. By splicing together bits and pieces of what others say that one, themselves, finds to touch their soul one is able to show others what one is like through the words of others. Thus the reflection is not, as one may initially assume, a mirror image but, indeed, that quality of thought and introspection one may gain with a small pool that shows its depths by showing the world around it."

At this point the lone gleep gathers up his papers and wanders off. Maybe someday he'll discover that room 32B really is a broom closet and he's supposed to be lecturing in 23B. . .

Sure. I'll join.

I liked it better when it was massive, yours and Aiden's sigs were my favorites and i would read through them everytime i saw them..... and i was slowly working my way through all your links, i think i made it halfway...

Just curious, what made you decide to shorten it? was it the Sig Rateing thread, or the Sig debate thread?

I deleted mabye 1 or 2 quotes that wern't pertinent anymore, and then shoved everything onto a Geocities page with is linked to my sig. I'd get a lil' guilty posting one-liners (or just a smiley).
I wanted to have a counter so I could monitor hits.
There also seems to be a disturbing number of people with sig limits at < 10. Which is why I found a way to shove all my links into the first line.
I saw that Announcement about changes to the boards. Well, God only knows what that would do to the sigs, so I wanted to get all my links to a safe 3rd party location. [/paranoid]
I also wanted to highlight that Oscar Wilde quote (which is just too, too funny).

Angstriana Irritibalia looks up at seeing the Foundation Threadkeeper's return.

What's this you see? Was that just the briefest glimmer of joy on her withered, cross looking face. Seeing that she is being observed, by scrying portals all over the Earth, Angstriana becomes self-conscious, quickly resuming the more familiar and desired disposition.

She pouts (irritably) ;) as she tightens her hair buns "ahh, yessss - much better!" she hisses to no-one in particular, as her follicles scream in objection to the tightness of her hair bun.

Thusly and much more irritably, Ms Irritibalia resumes the task of Librarianship. Duties are endless, cataloging endless signatures and attending to updates in technology. Irritably, she writes a note to management:

To Whom It May Conern,

It behoves me to announce that we have registered over 10,000 individual signatures in our library. However, attending to the endless tasks encumbent upon the role of Librarian and duely noting the (irritable) disposition required to keep silence in the library, I (irritably) appeal to you for new means of cataloging signatures.

The sheer volume of signatures is too much for an (irritable) old woman. I'm afraid, however, that it would need to be a mechanical aide, because I've scared off all the living aides. Unless this most annoying situation can be remedied, I'm afraid I can only promise to remain irritable.

Yours

Angstriana

Satisfied with her crossness, Angstriana "humphs" before resuming her work, tersely attending to the Help desk in the Great Library of Signatures
