A whole new guild house with a fresh coat of paint. The new oriental guild is for anyone who plays, or is interested in playing, and oriental character.

A towering palace rises before you. Samuria guard every entrance, and blasts of enerrgy rise from the training halls as shugenja and wu jen perfect thier arts. A hooded samuria sits atop a throne.

Sign me up.

I would like to see an Electricity or some other air-related element as an option for Wu Jen. Being limited to earth, fire, metal, water, and wood doesn't sit right with me.

those are the chinese versions of the elements, just as the shugenja class uses the japenese version.... Character name Dyne?

I thought the Oriental elements in genereral were Earth, fire, water, wind, and metal. I know wood is condisered powerful, but I thought it was summed up with earth.

Also sign me up with Gabrial. He is running a class from OA and some feats to. :)

From the Rokugani creatures book, it is determinable that their elements are earth, wind, fire, water, and void elements for the campaign setting. If it helps, that's what the shugenjas 3.5 are based off of.

Hey jagggar, could the oriental guild have the kienok highlands?

Interesting. Although, I don't get how metal generates water, but oh well.

What is the Shugenja like? Does it have elements like the Wu Jen? If so, is there an air element?

I don't have an oriental character, currently. I'm thinking maybe Samurai or Wu Jen, but maybe Shugenja.

Yes, there is an air element. Shugenjas cast divine spells, and can sense their element around them if they concentrate. Like wu jen, they require a choice in element, but instead of arcane spells, they cast divine spells. Scrolls act as foci (not the magical ones).

Is there a 3.5 version for them?

Complete Divine. A few people have the info on them.

complete divine. also contains the class that many think is broken (but isn't realy) the favored soul.

Each of the elements destroys another element and creates a new element. Fire destroys metal and creates water.

Also, in the Chinese five elements, air is just thin water - as you can tell by the places where the air gets thick and the water becomes visible in the form of fog/clouds.

So, any thoughts on languages? Particularly gamewise.

Rokugani?

I mean, is there an oriental common? Is "Common is common is common"?

Surely not all oriental characters come from Rokugan since the book specifically says certain oriental classes don't exist there. (One of my main irritations with OA. The other being it isn't OGC.)
Demonfey

12-01-05, 05:27 PM
I know, but it's a given language that's used as an oriental version of common. Actually, this would be a problem with the Faerunian countries with all the different languages as well. How about a Common (insert region here)?
jagggar

12-01-05, 06:30 PM
Well, FR regional languages are in addition to Common.

Perhaps a way to form the question is should the common of all campaign worlds be considered the same?
Is Greyhawk common the same as the common from Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms? Is that because they're all roughly european fantasy?
Should Common be based on what RW mythology/fantasy it comes from? In that case, do we make some sweaping generalization about asian fantasy like we've already done with european?

Hey, I think maybe we should.

Someone, my straightjacket please.

So, any thoughts on languages? Particularly gamewise.

Language: Nese with Common subtitles.

Personally, I've always assumed that Common is universally common in D&D.

Here you go, fresh from the drycleaners.
*hands jagggar her straightjacket*
How about we just say that the innate magic of Tyranor translates all versions of common into the common that the person listening to the speaker understands. It may be a cheap out, but it'll make things easier on everyone in the long run.

Are Leo and his bros actually ninja?
Ignore what the show(s)/movie(s)/comicbook(s) says and just look at them fight. They really ninja?

Scary project: Tell Naruto-fanboys what they're actually saying in Japanese.
Example: kage is not 'really cool/powerful leader' or whatever, but 'shadow; silhouette' or 'shade; gloominess' or kage de means 'behind one's back; behind the scenes'
Demonfey

12-05-05, 11:43 AM
I think I know a few fanboys that knew that anyway...
jagggar

12-05-05, 01:31 PM
It's just funny reading "You can tell your shadow...blahblahblah"

Hmm, so what's the name of that mirror which records surrounding events? I had a something-gasim back when I saw that October's Dragon quoted Ring for the eidolon flavor example. And since there are no videotapes in D&D, I need something else. . . Sadako is sufficiently oriental, isn't she?
Demonfey

12-05-05, 01:41 PM
There's always item/spell invention (think about all the ways to use and alter arcane eye to act as security cameras, for example. Couple alterations, add a mirror and gemstone (simply because gems are common foci, and people tend to look for them quite a bit before replacing them), add +1 to caster level, and when done correctly, you have a spell that makes an arcane eye effect that records onto the gemstone and, when touched to the mirror, would replay the images on the mirror. I just need to think about a name.
jagggar

12-05-05, 01:58 PM
It's odd though, 'cause I'm quite sure I've seen such an item already. It can store three lengths of recording and it records exactly what the mirror sees (and you can move around to see different angles in the mirror).

If we go for full magical representation of tech, then we need a VCR and a reason to have it (broadcast magic!). Man, action movies would be so awesome with magic. You have to make your save to see the behind the scenes footage :D .

Might be a good idea to hold off on making it/her until I read the conclusion though. Grrr. . . Me want my Loop.

Eating with half a mouth is weird.
Demonfey

12-05-05, 02:03 PM
Unfortunately, I don't get Dragon magazine.
The great thing about magic and technology is that, if technology is sufficiently advanced, it's indistinguishable from magic. Therefore, you could make a magic VCR, and all the things we have now.
Also, which series is Sadako from?
jagggar

12-05-05, 02:19 PM
Originally? Book series.

Recall the movie The Ring? It was based on the Japanese movie Ringu. (The Ring 2 was made up by American writers.)

Ringu is based on Ring by Koji Suzuki. Spiral is the sequal and Loop finishes up the trilogy. Spiral's movie is titled Rasen.

There's also manga versions. The Ring volume 1 and Sprial follow the books. The Ring volume 2 follows the movie Ringu 2 as I understand it. There's also Ring 0 (needs a / through the 0) and Birthday. One of these follows the movie Ring 0: Birthday, but I'm not sure which one.

Dare I get into what I know of plots?

Probably the best place to learn more http://www.theringworld.com/.
Demonfey

12-05-05, 04:30 PM
Ah. I didn't know that (never saw the Ring or thought about the books).
