How about for feats; like 4 hit points sacrificed for one feat? This mirrors the feats that provide +2 on two different skills. And you know; this could work the OPPOSITE way too. A rogue or bard could give a skill point per hit point, and a fighter a bonus feat for 4 hit points. Whatcha think? |

| Reversefigure410-24-06, 05:45 PM | So a Barbarian could drop his 12 hit points for 12 skill points, and a Rogue could trade their 8 skill points for 8 hit points? Under this system, the best way to be a good fighter is to be a Rogue with a couple of levels dip in Fighter. Dump those skills and run with a d6+8 hit points per level, more than anyone else, + all that Sneak Attack damage. Some classes recieve little benefit. A sorc doesn't really have either the spare skills OR hit points to give up. Also, INT and CON become substitutes for each other, reducing the amount of stats needed for some classes. A Wizard can dump CON, crank his INT, and move the skill points over to his hit points while still getting all the other benefits of high INT. I think you'll end up with two types of characters: One highly skilled with no hit points, and everyone else in the party dumping their skills for more HP. A Fighter's skills, for example, are handy, but you have so few skill points it doesn't make much of a difference anyway. Who wouldn't just pump it into an extra two HP a level? |
| bholdr_mage10-24-06, 06:49 PM | the purpose of "buying" points for anything has always intrigued me for balance. Many threads on these boards complain about how certain classes are under/overpowered, and a point buy would be beneficial. I think what has always bothered me about the fighter, sorcerer, wizard, cleric, and every other 2 + int class out there is they don't get too many skills. Those types of classes PRIMARILY become combat oriented classes. And that's what they focus on. Yeah, the wizard and the cleric can take spells that deal with role-playing, but generally the combat ones prevail. If only those classes had a better way to get skills and not feel like they are in the background during NPC role-playing encounters since they are second fiddle to a skill-monkey like a bard or rogue. The other main problem, aside from the wizard, every other one of these classes don't have int a high priority. In fact, most of the time I'd list it as second to last if not the last ability score in chronological order. And yes Reversefigure4, the sorcerer and the wizard get the shaft. Sorcerers have been debated on these board for like since 3.5 hit the shelves. Both can surely afford a hit point or two. Also, a d6+8 is a little better than a d12+4 (barbarian); but doing so for the rogue would mean giving up all those precious skill points. And I don't know about you, but I LIKE skills. Even if they do this for 1 level, the max skill rank for open lock/disable/MS/hide/sleight/tumble/UMD are going to be much lower. If you think a high hit point guy with sneak attack is bad, why not look at unearthed arcana, you know, the main idea behind this part of the posts, for the page of substituting a fighters feats for sneak attacks? Or giving up sneak attack for feats? Obviously this isn't too far off the block from that ideal. Maybe going the other way is too much; but I still can see hit points for skill points may work. |
| bholdr_mage10-24-06, 06:51 PM | Also, if the ranks are there. A Barbarian couldn't and wouldn't lose 12 hit points for 12 skill points. He'd last like 1 round in combat. There has to be enough spots for ranks; even if you add cross-class into the mess he just wouldn't do it. |
