I've looked at the taint rules from Heroes of Horror, and I just got this idea. Why should only evil get taint? I was thinking on a 4 way taint system, with characters able to be tainted by good, evil, law, or chaos. I'm hoping for some help, because I don't really know how to execute this. The level's and limits of Corruption (physical taint) and Depravity (Mental Taint) are the same as in HoH, but I'm not sure what I should have for Taint effects for other alignments (Particularly with good, less so with law and chaos) I'm also not sure what should happen when someone goes "over the edge" so to speak, with non-evil taint.

What I have figured out is that opposing taint cancels each other out, and that a couple of really alignment centric classes (Cleric, Paladin, perhaps Monk or Barbarian) should get taint suppression for their required alignments. Acquiring taint works in the same way as HoH. I also have a few basic non-evil taint effects figured out. A list of the taint effects so far is below

1. Law taint effects
1a. Law corruption
Mild
Monotonic voice
Voice becomes flat and monotonic. Take a -2 circumstance penalty to Diplomacy and Intimidate checks. Gain a +1 circumstance bonus to Bluff checks.

Moderate

Severe

1b. Law depravity (sp?)
Mild
Suppressed Emotions
Emotions are felt and expressed less intensely. Halve all morale effects, and take a -1 competence penalty on opposed charisma checks.

2.Chaos Taint
2a. Chaos corruption

Internal Chaos
Chaos invades the body, twisting internal organs at random. Lose 2 Points of constitution.

2b. Chaos Depravity
Mild
Turbulent Mind
Mind is filled with distracting thoughts. Take a -2 Penalty to
Concentration checks

This is a really good idea, keep working on it :)

One problem I have is that your system seems to favour neutrality, in the sense that the more taint you accumulate of any type, the more penalties you acquire. You might want to consider introducing certain benefits to high levels of taint as well (losing 2 hitpoints is not fun). And you may want to consider renaming things like "Good Taint" because that doesn't really make any sense. And what effect does high levels of taint have on things like "circle of protection from good".

Also, is this going to replace alignment? If I'm a Lawful Evil fighter, can I accumulate chaos and good taint and still maintain my alignment?

Perhaps, to solve the neutrality issues, make somebody immune to their alignment of taint? (the corners are partial immune, the neutral good/evil or chaotic/lawful neutral are full immune, and TN has very minor immunity to everything)
And change "taint" to "influence", perhaps, although I think "taint" is fine.
The good taint could be based on positive energy effects (although I can't think of much for that...)

I don't plan for this system to replace alingment.

Yeah, immunity should be given to taint of the same alingment. With corner alingment characters, perhaps they should be treated as having +6 wis and con with respect to taint of the same alingment. Perhaps if they're neutral on a scale, treat them as having +2 con and wis with taint, so a Lawful neutral character has their con and wis being treated as two points higher with respect to good/evil taint and is immune to Law tiant. A neutral good character having their con and wis treated as two points higher with respect to Law/Chaos taint and be immune to good taint. A TN character have their con and wis treated as two points higher with respect to all taint.

I like the idea with having positive energy being related to good corruption (Physical influence? Needs new name, but I'm stumped) . Also, I got the idea of Good depravity, (Needs new name also) perhaps they good become compulsed to help others of give money or somthing like that, but I'm not sure how to impliment this.

I like this idea. Hope to see it finished.

I think I have some good depravity syptoms worked out. I don't know where to classify them, though.

Compulsive Honesty
The character has a hard time lying. To lie, the character must make a DC 15 Will save. If failed, the character cannot tell the lie.

Got idea for good corruption

Radiant body
Your body glows like a torch. This cannot be supressed and is always on. The light is nonmagical in nature.

Makes sneaking tough, and is a beacon for attention. (I mean, a glowing guy walking around town is gonna attract a few stares.)
