I wonder if anyone else had thought of something similiar and/or have any ideas as to how to make it workable or is it just a crazy concept. Basically the idea is that you make each attack at a different initiative through out the round. Let's take an 11th level fighter with TWF. He rolls iniative at the start of combat and gets a 15. During one round, he decides he is going to do a full attack and TWF this round. He'll get four attacks at 9(11-2)/9(11-2)/4(6-2)/-1(1-2). Here's where the idea kicks in. Since he is taking a -2 on all attacks, his two attacks (on-hand and off-hand) occur at initiative 13(15-2). His third attack (2nd on-hand) will take place at initiative 8(15-2-5), and his fourth attack (3rd on-hand) will take place at initiative 3(15-2-10). He could have made one (for the whole round) 5' step adjustment before or after anyone of these attacks. Hmmm, looking at that perhaps that is a bit too complicated, how about just worrying about decreasing relative to the BAB. First set of attacks (the first on-hand and off-hand pair) occur at init 15, second set occur at init 10 (15-5), third set occur at init 5 (15-10). Too gimping to fighters? |

The D&D mechanics just aren't made for a "realistic" timekeeping system where actions need time to happen. |

If his opponent didn't act so far, he can make up several sneak attacks, before his opponent can react. I think, the idea isn't that bad. All you have to add is a rule for standard and move actions. Well... there is the problem that an opponent can simply wait until the fighter has had his first attack, then attack once himself and tumble out of range - as long as he moves more than five feet, the fighter has just wasted his full round attack since there is noone near him when he gets his next swing. And where is the difference to now??? The first fighter needs to get to his target and can attack once. The second fighter makes a single blow and tumbles out of range without AoO. So the first fighter has to move again and can't use the full attack action. THAT is the standard procedure during any fight. No bonus for having more attacks (TWF, creature type, haste), except for ranged combat! So his idea wouldn't make it worse. The biggest problem with this idea is, that there is no lower bound to initiative and the initiative value isn't dependent to your BAB. |
