A change to Racial Substitution levels - Help? [Archive] - Wizards Community

This thought just occured to me, actually, as I'm getting ready to go to class.

I really like the idea of racial substitution levels, it gives those classes a bit of a diversity in class features than just feat or skill combinations. And I like diversity.

However, the one thing I don't like is the fact that these changes supposedly encompass the WHOLE of the race, as if they were one large unifed people. Infact, I see that a lot with 3.5 D&D, such as with favored class being influenced by race (Elves are wizards, Dwarves are fighters, for example) instead of culture (Elves of X region/nation have Favored Class: Rogue instead, for example).

What I'm proposing is turning Racial Substitution levels into more of a Regional Substitution system where you gain specific abilities instead of the generic class abilities because of the diverse training you see across the land (with the restriction on once choosing a particular sub level progression, you have to either stick with it, or stay with the regular class as you advance).

Ideas? Thoughts?

Great idea!

I never liked the standard idea of racial sub. levels anyway, but you gave me some hope for it... :D

I love the racial substitution levels already, but I like the idea of regional ones a lot better. This might be because I had the same idea about 2 days ago for the campaign I am building. :D

If you haven't checked out Champions of Valor, you might want to. They have organizational substitution levels in there.

Edit: I just noticed that the CoV web enhancement is out. It is nothing but organization based substitution levels. Some of them are interesting, like the paladin with Hide in Plain Sight.

Hm. Thanks for the positive input. I rarely get any of that here.

Maybe I'll check out CoV. I don't have the money to buy many new alternate world suppliments and ontop of that, I'm not a big FR player.

Organizational Sub levels, that's another branch I didn't think of.

Oh my.
