| Makuya08-08-07, 08:08 PM | The discovered ones: all skills are class skills When you gain a level, you may change out a single feat (that isn't 1st-level-only) for any other feat you qualify for. Ignore LA for races (Maximum +4) The one I made: When you multiclass, apply (except for BAB, Hit Dice and saves) half your other levels to each class (e.g. a barb4/sorc4 would fight as a 6th-level barbarian and cast as a 6-level sorceror) (needs playtesting) |

The third is a balance issue, but can be outweighted by the rp implications. It depends completely on group, but I am positive as a whole. The new one sounds interesting. I cannot quite seem to break it, but it sounds like something that can be abused in some way... I would think it is perfect for any spellcaster multiclass, but perhaps a bit problematic with rogue/rangers for example? Not that either of them were to powerful :P All in all it sounds like a neat game, at least from the sort of house rules you have outlined. If you want some insiration for more, check out the Eiir campaign standard in the main link in my signature. There you will find all the house-rules I use as a GM. :) |
| locustechpriest08-09-07, 07:48 AM | The class skills thing makes me cringe. Yes, it probably doesn't unbalance anything, but I find that it lends more flavor to alter the class-skills (if you absolutely have to have a hedge-mage with perform) than to throw out the system completely... LA and multiclassing rules seem to add loads of power to some people (those with LA up to 4 and multiclassers), but may not help everyone. If some of your players are not taking advantage of this, they may fall behind, so you might want to balance it somehow. |
| Max Octavious Xavier08-10-07, 02:31 PM | all skills are class skillsMy group uses a similar "all skills cost 1 point" rule. If all skills are class skills then everyone can have level+3 in all skills. That is a little problematic. When you gain a level, you may change out a single feat (that isn't 1st-level-only) for any other feat you qualify for.Interesting, I don't have any real problem with this, but I think 1/level is too quick. Every other level or maybe any level in which you don't get either a feat or stat (ignoring feats from classes; ie: 2,5,7,10,11,13...) Ignore LA for races (Maximum +4) Wow. Please explain this. Do you mean I can play a halfdragon without any adjustments or do you mean the entire group are all going to be using +4 La? The ist has much potential for abuse while the 2nd is interesting. Frankly, I see everyone playing with templates. Why not, it's free and free is a very good price. When you multiclass, apply (except for BAB, Hit Dice and saves) half your other levels to each class (e.g. a barb4/sorc4 would fight as a 6th-level barbarian and cast as a 6-level sorceror) (needs playtesting)I will have to contemplate this rule, but for now I agree with unundindur. The new one sounds interesting. I cannot quite seem to break it, but it sounds like something that can be abused in some way... |

Thus, the rule should apply only when the DM agrees that the two classes do not synergize well enough, like said barb/sorc. Prcs should not be taken into account and the rule should be discarded if the player plans on taking a 1-in-2 prc like Mystic Theurge. |
| unundindur08-10-07, 04:37 PM | The easiest would likely be to say that it doesnt apply to prestige classes. I even expect that to be what the op intended :) |
| TiwazTyrsfist08-10-07, 05:13 PM | I really like the second one, about changing out feats. Also, your new one is kind of a mini-gestalt system. Which isn't bad, but will certainly result in higher power levels. |
| Roog08-11-07, 09:36 AM | When you multiclass, apply (except for BAB, Hit Dice and saves) half your other levels to each class (e.g. a barb4/sorc4 would fight as a 6th-level barbarian and cast as a 6-level sorceror) (needs playtesting) Firstly this will power up multiclass characters compared to single class characters. The following is only relevant to multiclass characters... This really encourages stacking up classes with lots of features. If you want a fighter type imagine a (adding up random classes) Thief 1/Paladin 1/Fighter 1/Ranger 1/Swashbuckler 1/Hexblade 1/Crusader 1/Warblade 1/Swordsage 1/Dervish 1/Bloodstone Blade 1/ BAB +10 HP 1d6+2d8+5d10+2d12 Saves 14+CON+CHA/6+DEX+CHA+INT/4+WIS+CHA, Evasion+Mettle SA +3d6, Trapfinding, Trapsense +1 Aura of good, detect evil, smite evil 2/day, Divine grace, lay on hands, Aura of courage, divine health, Turn undead, special mount Three Fighter Feats 2 favored enemies, Track, wild empathy, combat style (1st), Endurance, Animal companion Hexblade's curse 2/day, Arcane resistance, familiar, Another Feat (4 so far) Weapon Finesse, Grace +1, Insightful strike, Dodge bonus +1 Dervish dance 3/day, movement mastery, slashing blades, Spring Attack, Dance of death, Fast movement+10 ft. Furious counterstrike, Indomitable soul, Zealous Surge, Steely Resolve (10) 7 Crusader Maneuvers known - 5 usable, two stances weapon aptitude, Uncanny Dodge, Battle ardor (critical confirmation) Warblade Feat (5 so far) 6 Warblade Maneuvers known - 4 readied, two stances Returning attacks, Throw Anything, Martial throw, thunderous throw, Lightning ricochet, Blood wind ricochet Another fighter feat (6 so far) Thats 6 feats choices + about 6 fixed feats, compared to the fighters 6 choices; and more class abilities than you can shake a stick at. Imagine if the combination was even moderately optimized. Now imagine that with a Caster X/Full Casting Prestige A 1/Full Casting Prestige B 1/Full Casting Prestige C 1/Full Casting Prestige D 1 etc. |
| unundindur08-11-07, 12:26 PM | That depends on it beeing rounded up or down...if it was rounded down your 1/1/1 etc. build would gain nothing extra (you gain extra abilities as half your level).. And as I said earlier I think the op meant this for core classes, not prestige classes. Lets the the example of a wizard10/sorcer 10. This character would effectively be a 15th level wizard and a 15th level sorcerer, which I find absolutely balanced. It would power up a mystic thurge some, but not to an obscene level. |

Except that's not how he currently has it. A character that's 1/1/1/1/1/1 in any 6 base classes would work as a 4/4/4/4/4/4. This would be my dream, as I could optimize the hell out of a character using this (charisma, dex, wisdom, AND intelligence to my AC, yes please!) |

This would be my dream, as I could optimize the hell out of a character using this (charisma, dex, wisdom, AND intelligence to my AC, yes please!) Since it's half your other levels, you would need a level 7 char (1/1/1/1/1/1/1) to get level 4 class features (4/4/4/4/4/4/4). And if you want to limit it with a rule about rounding then at level 10, 2/2/2/2/2 still gives 6/6/6/6/6 class features. |
| Makuya08-12-07, 10:27 AM | After all that you guys said... I'm scrapping that one. I just wanted a rule that would make multiclassing less 'limited'. |
| CaoSlayer08-12-07, 10:27 AM | if you are 1/1/1/1/1/1 you would get zero synergy since you are adding 1/2=0 to the other classes, remember that in d&d you always round down. In that case with a level 6 character you could do 2/2/2 for level 4 in everyone feature, still cheesy but more controllable. I would rule to denote your first class as your main class and only add half level of your other classes to the features of your primary class. |

| Roog08-12-07, 11:24 AM | After all that you guys said... I'm scrapping that one. I just wanted a rule that would make multiclassing less 'limited'. In your experience, what kind of characters do you find are limited by the standard multiclassing rules? An explanation of how you find multiclassing 'limited' might lead to some suggestions. Back to the original post... Ignore LA for races (Maximum +4) When you use this rule, how common do you think it will be for your players to pick (high) LA races? Any particular reason why you picked +4 as the maximum? What level do your games tend to start at? |

What level do your games tend to start at? Actually, that houserule was mentioned by foxhengeyokai (who could only be found on the RPG chat). |
| Roog08-13-07, 02:33 AM | I would rule to denote your first class as your main class and only add half level of your other classes to the features of your primary class. That would encourage me to pick a class with good features for first level, then never take any more levels in it. I would have almost no reason to ever play a single class character (the only reason I can think of to not do that would be if I really did not want to lose a caster level). |
| Roog08-13-07, 02:34 AM | Actually, that houserule was mentioned by foxhengeyokai (who could only be found on the RPG chat). So, as the OP, what is the purpose of this thread? to list house rules you found? to list house rules? to list house rules you want to use? to discuss house rules? |
| DCAnderson08-13-07, 03:23 AM | When you gain a level, you may change out a single feat (that isn't 1st-level-only) for any other feat you qualify for. They actually allready have that in PHBII, and is actually a little more versatile. It's called "Retraining" and when you gain a level you can switch out one of a list of things including: A feat 4 skill ranks An alternate class feature And I'm sure there's more, I just don't have PHBII in front of me. |
| stargate52508-15-07, 02:01 PM | If you want something that may be a little less powerful, you could make it so that every class you have is treated as minimum 1/2 your highest class level. So a guy with 2/3/7/1/2 would be treated as a 3/3/7/3/3. Does that make sense? |
| Roog08-16-07, 02:42 AM | If you want something that may be a little less powerful, you could make it so that every class you have is treated as minimum 1/2 your highest class level. So a guy with 2/3/7/1/2 would be treated as a 3/3/7/3/3. Does that make sense? If (as in your example) you were level 15, you could take 1/1/11/1/1 to get 5/5/11/5/5 or 1/1/7/1/1/1/1/1/1 to get 3/3/7/3/3/3/3/3/3. But have a rule like this? What is it meant to accomplish? It will make people want to take more single level dips - but why is that something we should add house rules to encourage? |
| InsertNameHere08-16-07, 11:46 AM | I like to interpret the 'bonus levels for multiclassing' rule this way: "For each 2 levels you have in a non-prestige class, you may add an effective level to another non-prestige class you have." That seems balanced, mostly. Never mind the possible +30 BAB. |
