At first level a fighter chooses a prefered weapon. She received +1 to all attack rolls with her prefered weapon, and an addition +1/5 fighter levels (this replaces the bonus for Weapon Focus/Greater Weapon Focus with that weapon). At level 5, she receives +1 to damage with her prefered weapon for every 2 fighter levels (this replaces the bonus for Weapon Specialization/Greater Weapon Specialization with that weapon). At level 20 she increases the critical multiplier of her prefered weapon by 1.

Stolen from this (http://forums.gleemax.com/showpost.php?p=14658404&postcount=68)post.

Now inspired by this I thought of a different solution. How bout giving the fighter something similar to the ranger favored enemy special ability, only that it affected his weapons, not his enemies.

That would give him a new favored weapon at level 1 5 10 15 and 20

Each time he gets a new favored weapon the bonus on the old one increases by two. Just as with favored enemies. So a 5th level fighter would have one weapon where he got a +2 to hit and damage, and a weapon that he got a +4 to the same things.

It does not affect weapon groups such as swords or bows.

It stack with feats such as weapon focus and weapon specialization. But the bonus can't be used in power attacks. (this might be a break point).

Its all in the works so criticism is welcome.

I would follow the warblade way and allow the fighter to swap his specialized weapon for another one after some time to practice.

Else, it still wouldn't make a difference, in that the fighter would have no reason to use any other weapon other than the one he has the most benefits with.

See if you find my approach regarding warriors and weapon skill useful.

My numbers are less inflated, so you won't have to adjust, plus you get rational & very useful modifiers to other aspects.

The fighter is already pretty close or better than other PHB martial classes at fighting. Adding +10 to his AB would be ridiculously broken. I'd hardly think that balances him with the few skills and minor special abilities that the other martial classes get.

But that doesn't give the fighter numeric increases (level dependant), or a capstone, which is what both my original idea and skrap-san's idea seek to do. All it does is make the fighter slightly more flexible.

A substantial percentage of this message board would disagree with you on that, myself included.

First off, thanks for all the feedback.

Now my intention naive as it may be was to make a special ability that made the fighter feel more like the king of weapons, since that is how i see the class. So I thought that looking at the Ranger that also got a good base attack bonus and a variety of skills and special abillites would be a decent measurement. Now I'm not a big man of numbers, but I felt that if I removed the bonuses to skill checks it would start to even out.

I'm a bit against the idea of just changing weapons at random points in ones career, so I would at least limit this to the levels where they improved upon the ability.

Now the damage bonus don't have to be insane, but i feel that granting someone a bonus to hit and damage with one type of weapon at level 20 is not going to really break the class. And I'm open to the suggestion of moving the bonus to be gained in stead of bonus feats at say level 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 for example.

Another thing one could do is to make the bonus only +1 pr special weapon giving him a maximum of +5 to damage and hit. That would give us a fighter with 4 weapons he was more than decent in, and one where he truly shined (figuring he would focus feats on it and such). This would seem less game breaking than the +10 bonus.

Now there is certain ways that one can limit this bonus.
1. It is precision damage, (think critical hits). Now it wont count against constructs and UDs.
2. It will not be doubled or tripled by critical hits.
3. now I'm out, but I feel it is shaping up a bit better now.

Now then there is the question, should this bonus be granted with trip and disarm attempts?

And personally I feel that a fighter who invests in the shield feats also should be able to select one of the bonuses for his attacks with shieldspikes and shieldbashes.

Any thoughts?

If I were to use something like this, I would use the golden standard of "+1 to Hit, +2 to damage", and make the growth more stictly like the ranger (each time you gain a new bonus, you also improve any one bonus, including the new one as an option). So:

Lvl 1: x @ +1/+2
Lvl 5: x @ +2/+4, y @ +1/+2 OR x @ +1/+2, y @ +2/+4
Lv 10: x @ +3/+6, y @ +1/+2, z @ +1/+2 OR x@ +2/+4, y @ +2/+4, z @ +1/+2 OR...
and so on.

The idea to do it like the ranger was part of the intention,
The +1/+2 was also a really good idea.
