| Paladin's Pride01-16-08, 02:04 AM | Just wanted a little feedback on this incantation. I was going to allow the sorcerer to research it since the party is stuck in the wilderness without access to higher level divine scrolls that they find themselves in need of. Healthful Bloodletting Conjuration (healing) Effective Level: 6th Skill Check: Knowledge (Arcana) DC20, 2 successes, Heal DC20, 4 successes Failure: Death of target Components: V, S, M, B Casting Time: 60 minutes Range: touch Duration: instantaneous Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless) Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless) This dangerous but effective incantation removes magical afflictions by concentrating the offending magical energy in the afflicted creature’s bloodstream and removing the magically charged blood from the creature’s body. The target of the spell takes backlash damage from the blood loss depending on how powerful an affliction is removed. Affliction could normally be cured by (backlash damage ) Remove Fear (2d6) Lesser Restoration, Remove Paralysis (4d6) Dispel Magic*, Remove Blindness/deafness, Remove Curse, Remove Disease (6d6) Restoration** (8d6) Break Enchantment* (10d6) Heal***, Greater Dispel Magic* (12d6) * The incantation require a caster level check to remove afflictions when used to remove afflictions that would normally be affected by these spells. The caster level of the incantation is 12 (limited to 10 when dispel magic is being emulated). ** This use of the incantation requires a material component of 100 gp worth of crushed pearls. *** The target receives no hit points from the incantation, even when it mimics the effects of a heal spell. If an affliction cannot be removed by one of the spells listed, then the healthful bloodletting incantation cannot remove the affliction either. If the target does not have blood, it cannot benefit from healthful bloodletting (for this reason, this incantation cannot restore petrification). The incantation can only be used to remove afflictions, even in cases where one of the above spells have other uses. Material Component: a live leech Failure: On the second failed check, the target dies from blood loss. The healthful bloodletting incantation can be used to provide low to mid-level characters a means to remove curses, ability damage, negative levels, and other afflictions when they lack the means to accomplish these goals through spells. The backlash component is serious enough that players will probably not choose to use this incantation unless the affliction is seriously inhibiting the progress of the group, and would almost certainly choose to use a spell instead if it is available. Therefore, classes with access to healing spells will find little competition from this incantation. |
