I modified the Animal Companion a bit. In 2e, the ranger was the charater with this feature, not the druid. I changed how powerful the effective druid level was. I also added the ability to gain additional companions. While it may seem that the other animal companions will be too weak, that isnt the real point of the extra animals. I like the idea of a retired ranger having friends all thru his area.

Animal Companion (Ex): At 4th level, a ranger gains an animal companion selected from the following list: badger, camel, dire rat, dog, riding dog, eagle, hawk, horse (light or heavy), owl, pony, snake (Small or Medium viper), or wolf. If the campaign takes place wholly or partly in an aquatic environment, the following creatures may be added to the ranger’s list of options: crocodile, porpoise, Medium shark, and squid. This animal is a loyal companion that accompanies the ranger on his adventures as appropriate for its kind.
This ability functions like the druid ability of the same name, except that the ranger’s effective druid level is his ranger level minus three. A ranger may select from the alternative lists of animal companions just as a druid can, though again his effective druid level is his ranger level minus three. Like a druid, a ranger cannot select an alternative animal if the choice would reduce his effective druid level below 1st.
A ranger may also gain an additional animal companion at every 4 levels after 4th. The ranger’s effective druid level is 4 levels lower than his effective druid level for the previous animal companion.

If using the Favored Environment variant from Unearthed Arcana, I also thought of allowing the ranger to add have of his Favored Environment bonus to his effective druid level for an animal companion from the appropriate environment. I would limit the effective druid level gained from this to his actual ranger level.

That is quite an interesting notion. Reminds me of a character in the Chimera plu-in for Myth II.
Nice. :)

This is a shameless :bump:

Not so much, really, I was reading the suggested variant for the Druid in the UnCon variant class contest. I thought that this idea could also apply to a modified Druid.

I like what you are getting at; it really could be very interesting... Thanks!

I changed the animal companion ability of the ranger to ranger level -3 a long time ago; it works much better.

This ability functions like the druid ability of the same name, except that the ranger’s effective druid level is his ranger level minus three. A ranger may select from the alternative lists of animal companions just as a druid can, though again his effective druid level is half his ranger level.Fix that.

I foresee no problems from this change.
