How does it go, how?

Do you want a summary?

Yes, i find it illogical to buy a book for one alternate rule. I read that most of UA is OGL and thus discussable on the boards. If this falls into that catagory i would like to know it.

Okay, well, here's the basics. Armors receive a certain number of DR, which is subtracted from its original total AC.

DR 0/-- Padded
DR 1/-- Leather
DR 1/-- Studded Leather
DR 2/-- Chain Shirt

DR 1/-- Hide
DR 2/-- Scale Mail
DR 2/-- Chainmail
DR 2/-- Breastplate

DR 3/-- Splint Mail
DR 3/-- Banded Mail
DR 3/-- Half-Plate
DR 4/-- Full Plate

So Full Plate would give +4 AC and 4 DR/--, instead of +8 AC. For natural armor, divide by five and round down to find the DR. Subtract the total as you do for armor. So a Dragon with a normal Natural Armor of +29 would now have +24 Natural Armor to AC and DR 5/--.

Enhancement bonuses to armor increase the AC only. Shields work normally (i.e. they don't provide DR). Armor DR stacks with other DR X/--, so a Barbarian would add his armor DR to his class DR.

Thanks, any ideas on how to convert all AC into DR and making a EC(evasion class) in it's place. Basically any boost in AC not lost from being caught flat footed(except sheild bonus), being turned into DR.

Wellllll, you might want to take a look at Iron Heroes (http://www.montecook.com/cgi-bin/page.cgi?mpress_IL) when it comes out. In that variant PHB, the designer re-vamps the defense system to something similar. He adds a Defense bonus to each class, and he also makes it so that you receive DR in dice. So a leather armor would grant 1d4 DR, for example. I think it's a good idea, as flat DR numbers simply make you invulnerable to attacks below a certain number, and I don't really like that. Take a look at some of the sample material and design diaries to get a better idea of his approach. You'll have to wait until late July/early August for the book, though.

Another idea would be to take a look at the d20 Star Wars system. Its armor system is all DR, and it also grants a class defense bonus.

Really, the trick is figuring out the numbers, which is somewhat a trial-by-error kind of thing.

Ooh, DR as dice. I like that. I like it a lot. *goes off to ponder*
