Unearthed Arcana provides that, at the cost of an Action Point, you can double your defensive fighting, i.e., boost your defensive fighting bonus from +2 to +4, or the equivalent of Total Defense. Alas, there is nothing to account for a boost to total defense. A question has been asked in my game as to whether the same rule should apply ot total defense, i.e., from +4 to +8. I see two schools of thought here and thought I'd ask the Boards as well.

First School:

If it isn't in the rules, it's not for a reason.

Granted, we're talking about variant rules, which is what Unearthed Arcana is all about. Still, even with variant rules, there should be an element of game balance and that said, I might not be taking something into account for expanding the variant to total defense.

Second School:

Boost in Defense should be "Boost in Defense."

This is the "logic dictates" argument. I.e., a x2 boost to fighting defensively, which then equates with total defense, then undermines the boost to AC given through total defense. Hence, the same boost should apply to total defense as well, i.e., from +4 to +8.

In the end, +8 AC is a tad high. But still, +4 defensive fighting seems a tad mighty as well. Granted, we ARE speaking of action points, though, which are to make the character "shine." So, maybe such a boost isn't so bad.

Thoughts.
