Anyone have any that they prefer beyond the norm?

Well i'm not totally sure how they normally work but basing on the Hero Points from Arcana Evolved I've changed them so you spend one to automatically roll maximum yourself or force someone else to roll minimum. So on an attack roll you get to automatically confirm a critical while on a damage roll you roll max, etc. This variant makes them less heroic and amazing though so it's better for gritter games that like the idea but don't like having rolls of 21-40.

I was looking more for a variant house rule based on the Eberron system of APs.

I use the almost identical "Hero Point" system from Mutants & Masterminds. Characters only gain 1 Action Point every odd-numbered level, but the points return at the beginning of each adventure, or sooner if the DM wants during long adventures. And there's a feat that provides an additional Action Point, with a maximum equal to the character level.
