I'm thinking to change the rust monster's ability to destroy weapons a bit: Rather than destroying the weapon or armor on the first touch, it needs two touches to completely destroy the item. Before that, the item is simply rusty, suffering a -4 penalty to attack and damage. Rusty items can be repaired by a DC 20 Craft check in the appropriate item category and an expenditure of one-fifth the item's original value in gold. A rusty item, if sold, is worth one-fifth its original price. This makes rust monsters less dangerous... however, it probably has an effect on their CR. I'm not sure what to do about that... |

Someone might steal your car, or a dump truck might back into it and drive off not realizing it. Or terrorists blow up the world trade center. Bad things happen in real life, and once a character's sword that they have devoted all their money into upgrading gets destroyed leaving them with a potion of healing as their only other magic item, they will learn not to put all of their eggs in one basket. Besides, if the group chooses to fight the rust monster knowing what it is (or after they find out when someone loses an item), they deserve to lose a few items. That is part of fighting a rust monster and part of the advantage of playing a character who is less reliant on armor and weapons such as a wizard or monk. |
