I personally don't like the rules for Aiding another (+2 to the roll regardless of skill or ability)

The discussion started in this thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=333535) and I decided to move it here so I don't take over from the original thread topic.

The original idea is here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showpost.php?p=4790818&postcount=19) basically changing the way you assist another.

After some comments it got to
To aid in a skill check. roll a quick contest of skills. Front man rolls for the skill. The DC for the aiding person's roll is now what the front man rolled. If you succeed then you add your skill bonus to the final roll. If you fail then you have nothing useful to add.

example. Bard with +15 on diplomacy roll an 8. Total skill check is 23. half orc now puts his 2 bits in, he needs to roll a 18 or better but he adds his total skill modifier (+6) to the Bard's roll making the chek 29.

If the bard rolls 11 or better then the half orc has nothing to contribute (unless you play that 20 is always a success on a skill roll).

but some other problems were pointed out that I will respond to

So a rogue strength 10 trying to open a door is better off doing it himself than if the Wizard strength 9 were to help him

That is an issue that needs to be figured out. With the existing system the strength 9 wizard gives the same amount of assistance as a strength 20 barbarian, this is what I am trying to find a workable solution to. If you have an idea of how to work this better then speak up by all means.

So if you have 2 bards with a +21 diplomacy they cant aid each other?

Errr.. where did you get this idea?
Edit: just saw wheer you got that idea, just a typo on my part.
With my second suggestion it works out as a contested roll kinda thing. ie if bard 1 gets 33 on his diplomacy check (roll of 12 + 21) then the DC for bard 2 assisting is 33. If bard 2 makes this DC (just needs to roll higher than bard 1) then he adds 21 to the final diplomacy roll making it 54.

What about aiding in combat if you have a fighter +10 BAB aiding a wizard +5 BAB then the wizard can get a +10 to his attack roll if the fighter rolls a 5 or better?
Not entirely sure where you are coming from with this. I intend on leaving aid another for combat alone at the moment.

I am open for suggestions and ideas on how to solve some of the more obvious issues (eg 2 low stat characters assisting each other).

Actually under the current system the strength 20 barbarian provides more of a bonus than the strength 9 wizard because the barbarain is more likly to succeed in helping.
Look at it this way:
Strength 20 has an 80% chance of giving a +2 aid so that works out to a +1.6 in the long run
Strength 9 has an 50% chance of giving a +2 aid so that works out to a +1 in the long run.

Now if you want to allow a way for some one to offer more of a bonus, I can think of 2 houserules that could work

1) you can allow them to voluntarily increase the DC by 5 to increase the bonus by +1 for every 5 the DC is increase.

or the more genorous method

2)set the DC at 10 for +2 and for every 5 points the DC is beat by increase the aid bonus by 1.
