me, and many of my friends don't like the fact that crafting takes away xp. we understand why--it limits how much you can craft. i was woundering if there was anyone who had a diffrent system for crafting. :help: if it doesn't limit or cap at some point, so what... i just need a few ideas here to get me started.

Give all PCs "Crafty XP". This is 10% of normal XP awarded. From this CXP comes the XP cost of crafting items. Non crafting classes can assist by covering no more than half of the xp cost.
So if a party of first level PCs each just earned 500 xp, then they would each also get 50cxp.
A Wizard that just achieved 5th level with 10,004 xp, he would have 1,000cxp. Let us say he has Craft Wand. He wants to craft a Wand of Magic Missile. Base price is 3750, which means an XP cost of 150.
This Wizard's xp total is unviolated, but he now only has 850cxp. If his fighter buddy helped, then each would pay 75cxp.

You could try out the 'rpga' method-
When you buy anything that you have the craft feat for (that you can craft, so you need the spells and such) it costs only 75% of what it normally goes for-

i've been thinking about the whole 10% thing, that seems a bit too much.
unless its a high crafting setting
what about this variant :lightbulb

"first i'd like to add that i play a lot of Neverwinter Night's (a d&d pc game)"
in neverwinter nights (nwn)...they have a variant on one of the skills that i really like :ayyyy!:

-for every 5 ranks in tumble you have, you earn + 1 to your AC as long as you are wearing light armor and carrying no more than a light load.
(this solves my problem with deffense:pbbbtt:, and my players like it too )

so i was thinking... :thinks:

-for every 5 ranks in a craft you have, you earn a + 1% craft xp (cxp). This doesn't go away untill used.

so if you are 2nd level and have 5 ranks in 3 different crafts, then you have a total of 3% cxp. Lets say you kill a goblin...100 xp, & 3 cxp. enough to make like 3 scrolls (weak at that). However, if you kill a weak animal, 1/4 CR, then you earn 75 xp, & 0 cxp. It's 0 because you didn't earn enough to actually gain anything. :teach:
what do you think????? :help: :whatsthis

That is a very good incentive for keeping up the crafting skills. Kudos to you!

Time and even resources can limit this venture all the same. The crafting style I prefer demands a lot of attention to detail from the DM in addition to non-rules w***ing from your players.
Essentially my group allows players to gather components for themselves to alleviate the gp costs, and to acquire more valuable versions thereof to negate the XP cost.

I have always used a similar method to Antioch, and I find it works very well. It also explains why NPC wizards always send PCs on quests to find the strangest things. You know the, “Get me the purest snow from the highest mountain on the smallest island “type of quests :D .

This allows more adventuers which benefit the whole party and can open up yet again additional plot hooks. Like an exponentially expanding series of adventures.
