Alternately give the gestalt characters half XP, or require double XP for them to gain levels. In this system, gestalt characters remain considerably more powerful than standard multiclass characters, while falling behind single-class party members. When the single-classers reach 20th level, the gestalt members will be 14th, a significant disadvantage made up for by their versatility. Thoughts? |

Penalizing by 50% is more than is appropriate, since, while having the resources of two characters, they can't take two actions a round, and thus are not twice as effective. Treat monsters as 1 CR lower with respect to the gestalt characters unless they rely on failed saves to be challenging, in which case treat them as 2 CR lower (which does result in 1/2 exp, but this should not be all the time) |

That method with that XP chart ends up with a Gestalt character two levels behind the rest of the party (which was in accordance with the general consensus at the time that a Gestalt character is worth a +2 LA). I also allow triple-Gestalts which require triple the XP to advance. Note that I also place restrictions on Gestalts in my campaign - each class taken must be one of the four main classes (Fighter, Rogue, Cleric, Wizard) or a favoured class. If a character's favoured class is one of the four main classes they can use any class in conjunction with it as a 2-class combination. I use this method as it most closely resembles the multi-class rules of previous editions. |
