It, unlike the multiclass system, is a viable option for characters who focus on spellcasting. However, for those of us who want a slightly less highly powered game, it requires a bit of modification. This system uses XP penalties to increase the importance of favored classes and expands the favored class/XP penalty system. Anyway, here it is. When a character takes a class combination for the first time, he chooses which class will be dominant for the purposes of HD, Attack, and Saves or if the two classes will combine for those purposes. If he chooses a dominant class, that class provides those traits and the the other class does not effect them. If he chooses that the classes combine, he averages the traits of the two classes. Hit dice move to the size half-way between the hit dice of both of his classes. If the hit die size would average between d8 and another die (d10 or d6), it does not result in d8. If the BAB medium for 1 class and good or poor for the other, it is that of the non-medium class. Good and poor saves become average when combined. XP Penalties: Class 1: Class 2: XP Bonus/Penalty: Primary Primary +2%* Primary Secondary 0% Secondary Secondary -5% Primary Tertiary -5% Secondary Tertiary -10% Tertiary Tertiary -20% * only applies in certain cases. See Below. Humans begin with two primary and eight secondary classes at character creation (if you only use the 11 core classes, only one class will be considered tertiary). Part humans (half-humans and planetouched) have one primary class and two secondary classes determined by their race, but they also begin with one additional primary and secondary class of their choice. Non-humans have one primary class determined by their race and three secondary classes, two of which are determined by their race. Level adjustment and racial hit dice never cause an XP penalty or bonus but must be taken with a racially favored class. Note that XP penalties or bonuses only apply until another level is gained. Core Races: Race: Favored Classes (Primary/Secondary) Human Special (see above) Dwarf Fighter/Artificer and Cleric Elf Ranger/Bard and Sorcerer Gnome Artificer/Wizard and Druid Half-Elf Ranger/Bard and Sorcerer Half-Orc Barbarian/Rogue and Spirit Shaman (Complete Divine) Halfling Sorcerer/Rogue and Bard Feats: Shift Focus [General] You change your focus to another area. Benefit: Choose one primary and one secondary class. These replace another primary and secondary class that you have. Special: This feat may be gained multiple times. Widen Focus [General] You broaden your horizons to include another class. Benefit: You gain another secondary class. Special: This feat may be gained multiple times. Strengthen Focus [General] You focus more strongly on a class. Benefit: Choose one secondary class you posess. It becomes a primary class for you. Any input would be appreciated. A work in progress. |
