| technochris8104-07-06, 05:24 AM | is there any drawback to the Wizard Variant: Domain Wizard (in Unearthed Arcana) at all? am i wrong our are their extra spells totally free? -chris |
| josephbt04-07-06, 06:53 AM | yup, totally free i'm playing a battle domain wizzo right now and it's ok. the only drawback is that u have to fill those bonus slots with your domain spells, so all of my bonus slots are True Strike because i don't like the other spells much. |
| technochris8104-07-06, 09:05 AM | that's what i was afraid of totally free is totally ridiculous -chris |
| Millennium04-07-06, 09:25 AM | Why? The wizard already gets two free spells per level, and he can pick what those are. One extra free spell isn't that bad, particularly when that spell is predetermined. |
| Lucan_Desmond04-07-06, 11:04 AM | It does shrink the gap between sorc and wiz for spells per day by 50% on average. Even though the spells are predetermined, if you choose a good domain, you won't really mind that will you? It does seem a little over the top that they gain something pretty good and lose nothing in return, but if it fits in the game and everyone is still having fun, oh well. Later, Des |

| Hariman04-07-06, 01:31 PM | Well, this is another case of, "Why take a normal X when Variant X is overpowered." I'd impose a penalty of ONE prohibited school on a domain wizard. I think the designers don't realise how much a carefully chosen domain can mean to a wizard. |
| Bob Loblaw04-07-06, 02:19 PM | I've had the chance to play a few domain wizards, as has one of the other players in our group. It really hasn't shifted power enough to make it an issue. We would have chosen those spells anyway. We would have found a way to get those spells cast. It really didn't do much for us. If you really want to give them a penalty, I would not force them to give up an entire school of magic. That's a bit harsh since you don't get that much of a bonus. Perhaps they lose their familiar or they are considered 4 levels lower when determining the familiar's abilities. Maybe they need to take a feat call Wizard Domain, which would give them the spells. It really didn't make them significantly more powerful from our standpoint. |

But if the DM extends it to Cleric Domains, then a Prohibited School makes more sense. Of course, allowing Cleric Domains is a house rule. It's not actually what a domain wizzard is supposed to be. |
