An alternative to the small feats [Archive] - Wizards Community

something me and my players have always despised about some of the feats on the list is that they do so little for being a feat. some of it you would never even think of taking because of it, and others that i reciently read (alot of the technique ones from the complete warrior) seem like you could do in combat anyway without the feat (i would love to cite an example or two, but the book is not handy).

Something that me and one of my players conceptualized was a system where some of those feats were instead considered abilities (still need a good name for them), and these abilities can be bought by spending a period of training (like a when a wizard creates a new spell), and paying an exp cost. For example: Toughness - It adds one extra hit point, whoop de doo. Yea it is an entry level feat that is a prereq for some other nice feats, but other than that, it is pretty much useless. now if you were able to just spend maybe 500exp and buy it, it dosn't seem much like a burden anymore. Of course the cost would vary depending on how much the former feat did, and this does not eliminate the fact that the ability is still a prereq for the other feats.

This entire idea is still a concept, so it needs alot of work and fine tuning, but i think it sounds promising and i would like to hear what others think of it as well.

I like the concept - if magic users can learn new tricks why can't fighter types? To do this though i'd make it require a feat. This feat would be an "Ability Slot", basically you take a feat to gain the ability to know a "Minor" one. This could then be swapped with a certain amount of training (no XP cost). For example if you took the feat and trained you could gain Toughness (which btw raises your HP by 3). If later on you decide you think that feat is too sucky you could then change it to Dodge or some other weak feat. The idea is similar to the Man At Arms from Iron Heroes (by Malhavoc Press) - you have a few feat slots you can change every now and then. Ofcourse there needs to be a drawback and there is - the feats do not count for prereqs. This means if you wanted more feats from that tree you'd have to take it normally. You'd also have a Moderate and Major feat ofcourse.

That's not great either but i like the concept of learning new abilities or feats without spending a feat on it similar to magical research. I don't think an XP cost is the best though, i think just taking a feat should be enough to allow it.
