However, I recently came up with and idea for Rangers to make them spell-less and want to know what you guys (and girls) think. Concept: Take away spells (all of 'em). Give them both combat styles (two-weapon fighing and archery). Also give them Favored Terrain (found as Favored Environment in UA pg. 65) Lv___Special____________________________ 01---1st favored enemy, track wild empathy 02---Rapid shot 03---Endurance, two-weapon fighting 04---Animal companion, 1st favored terrain 05---2nd favored enemy 06---Manyshot 07---Woodland stride, improved two-weapon fighting 08---Swift tracker 09---Evasion, 2nd favored terrain 10---3rd favored enemy 11---Improved precise shot 12---Greater two-weapon fighting 13---Camouflage 14---3rd favored terrain 15---4th favored enemy 16--- 17---Hide in plain sight 18--- 19---4th favored terrain 20---5th favored enemy |

First, there's the issue of it possibly getting too powerful if it stacks with favored enemy. It's easy to handle that, however, by saying they don't stack. So if you have +2 against orcs and +4 in the plains, he should only get +4 to spot an orc in the plains. Second, and more importantly, you may be giving it too much in exchange for spells. If you give the ranger both combat styles, you should only give one or two favored terrains. Or maybe give them a choice of a favored enemy or terrain at every four levels instead of every five as is normal for a ranger. But that's just my take. As I said, I really like the idea of giving the spell-less ranger both combat styles. I'd take that, and boost the animal companion, so the effective druid level is (ranger level - 3) rather than (ranger level / 2). And maybe throw in fast movement at 4th level. A spell less Ranger doesn't need Concentration. Give him Tumble instead. Yeah, a fair idea. |
| DragonBringerX12-24-06, 10:47 PM | alright...howabout the following changes: take away concentration - give them tumble instead take way the favored terrain idea give them fast-movement at lv 2 (in light or medium armor) give them animal compainion (druid lv -3) ____ hows that, too weak or balanced? |
| Krusk12-24-06, 11:50 PM | look up favored terrain in the iron kingdoms setting by privateer press. -note if thats not allowed in the boards delete it- They have the ranger class gain this ability and it basically applies only to skills in that area. Things like hide, move silently, track ect. Makes sense to me. And gets around the crazyness of favored terrain and enemy bonuses on attack and damage. |
| Krusk12-24-06, 11:54 PM | Realized you probably dont have that 3rd party book. In a nutshell they give favored terrain at 2nd, 9, and 17th level. and it applies to hide, move silent, spot, survival, and removes movement penalties. Actually theirs is a spellless ranger varient that Id highly suggest you to check out. Not gonna post it, cause im not sure how legal that is. |

I think that might be okay. Such a ranger at low levels will be more powerful than regular rangers at low levels. It could work, though. I wouldn't give them fast movement before level 4, but that's me. |
