On the issue of LA or Level Adjustment, I recognize that it serves a very useful role in balancing standard and more powerful races. That said, I think it's harsh on specififc characters at low levels. My solution is to have shadow or off levels which do nothing but increase Effective Character Levels (ECL) at regular intervals. LA determines how many of these "shadow" or "off" levels a character must gain to reach his or her 20th character level. This only goes to LA +10. Does any one else think this is a good idea?

Level Character
Adjustment Level
LA +1 Level 5
LA +2 Levels 5 and 10
LA +3 Levels 5, 10 and 15
LA +4 Levels 5, 10, 15 and 20
LA +5 Levels 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20
LA +6 Levels 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18
LA +7 Levels 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14
LA +8 Levels 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16
LA +9 Levels 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18
LA +10 Every even level until 20th

If I understand it correctly, even +10 LA race would be playable at full power at 1st level?
So a Shadow Half-Dragon Vivacious Human is available in a 1st level party?

By first level I mean first level after its racial hit dice. Does that help?
