I came up with this and it seemed reasonable to me, but I wanted to see if you could poke holes in it.

Use the WP/VP system as normal. On a critical hit, any damage which is not normally multiplied on a critical hit (such as sneak attack damage or energy weapons) strike vitality isntead, except 1 point for each dice is routed to wounds instead.
Example: A 5th level rogue with a flaming longsword sneak attacks an ogre and gets a critical hit. The damage comes out 1d8 + 1d6 fire + 3d6 sneak +2 strength bonus attack. Rolling the dice, the damage comes out to 5 + 2 fire + 13 sneak attack + 2 strength. The ogre takes 11 wound points (5 longsword + 1 fire + 3 sneak attack + 2 strength) and 11 vitality (the fire and sneak attack damage not put towards wounds).

In addition, all damage dealing spells which do not require an attack roll can cause wound damage on a critical save. A critical save is a natural 1 with a followup roll which results in a failure. If a spell requires neither a saving throw or an attack roll, then still roll a saving throw for the spell for the purposes of determining wound damage only. On a critical save, 1 point of damage for each dice rolled is taken as wound points instead of vitality. All static damage is taken as wound points on a critical save.
Example:
An 8th level wizard casts lightning bolt on a white dragon. The damage comes out to 30 points. The dragon rolls a natural 1 and rolls a second save which comes out as a failure, indicating a critical save. The dragon takes 8 points of wound damage and 22 points of vitality damage.
The same wizard later casts magic missile at the dragon. The dragon rolls a save, which does not affect the damage dealt. He rols a 2, which fails but is not a natural 1, so the dragon takes the damage as vitality damage.
Next round, another magic missile is cast, but this time, the dragon rolls a natural 1 followed by a failed save against the wizard's DC for a first level spell. The wizard rolls 4d4 + 4 and gets 14. The dragon takes 8 points of wound damage (1 for each die plus the static damage) and 6 points of vitality.
