I'm starting up a campaign and wanted to start out very low leveled and very low key (OH NO - Its a size small centipede!).

I turned to the DMG 3.0 and looked up the Apprentice Level character section (Pg 40 for those who want to know) and found I didn’t really like the look and feel of it. It was more built for playing multi-classed 1st level characters than 0-level characters (which is what I was looking for).

Going through the SRD and the DMG 3.0 I've created what I feel is a fairly balanced system usable for both single-classed 0-level characters and multi-classed 1st level characters. I’m looking for something I can use again in the future if I wanted to…

I’m looking for any feedback you might be able to provide me.
1) Game balance
2) Minor or major tweaks
3) Funny wording
4) How awesomely cool I am (well you don’t HAVE to ;))
or etc.

Thank you!

I provided a link to a PDF because I didn’t feel up to the challenge of converting all the tables over to message board format – I know it would be easier for most people to look at ON the board. But its just a straight text (pdf) document 49k in size…

I followed the link.

They only need 500 EXP to level up, right?

I've never had it take more than about eight hours of play to go from 1st to 2nd, so characters would probably brake out of 0th level in, like, four hours. It's almost not worth the trouble.

Also, on a side note, I would be very interested to hear what kinds of adventures you think would be appropriate for 0th level characters.

I figured it could be run in one session with the characters. - Think of it almost as a prologue or prelude for your characters - background if you will.

The campaign I'm starting up (uses in part apprentice level characters):
2 characters - non-elite array (13,12,11,10,9,8) in stats
start out with the stats of 1-level commoners (+0 hit, +0 all saves, proficiency in one simple weapon - 5d4gp)
So far for simple weapons they have choosen a club and a quarterstaff.

@ 125 xp they get to take a 0-level apprentice - all stats get +1
@ 250 xp they get to gestult to a second 0-level apprentice - all stats get +1
@ 500 xp they get to gestult to a level 1/level 1 character all stats get +1
@ 1000 xp they get to gestult to a level 2/level 2 character all stats get +1

currently the characters are
Human - going for gestulted rogue/sorcerer
1/2-elf - going for gestulted druid/ranger

I use modified gestulting rules - nothing stacks, 1 class is "primary" you must always take that class - other class can be prestiged out for PrC's
So for example if you took blackguard and rogue gestulted, the sneak attack from the rogue is better than the steak attack from the blackguard so you only use the rogue's sneak attack.
Same with spell casting levels - if you gain more than one level of wizards from two different classes they don't "stack" you just get the best of the two. (stops stupid twinkery with things like mystic thurge)

The campaign is going to be set in Haranshire (from the 'Night Below: an Underdark Adventrue' campaign – 2e). The setting is very detailed and makes for a great setup.

The concept is two very ordinary characters stumble onto greatness, but still remain small town townsfolk at heart. Very much tied into the roots of the community. Both born and bread there.

The first encounter I plan on running is with some monstrous centipedes size tiny (CR 1/8) and one of size small (CR 1/4). The two of them should be able to handle that.

Anybody have any thoughts? Critique's? - Is it perfect as is?
