In this variant, Reserve Points would first be used to remove subdual damage (probably at a 2 for 1 rate--- 2 subdual for 1 reserve point) then convert regular damage to subdual, which would be removed as normal when hp reached max again. For example, full plate normally provides +8 armor. With both these variants, it would give +4 armor, DR 4/-, and convert 4 points into subdual. Overall, that's still very good protection, I think. Especially if you went all the way and got a set of adamantine Full Plate +5 constructed..... You'd have a harness that gives a +7 armor bonus, DR of 9/-, and converted 7 points of damage into subdual each turn. Assuming a fight doesn't last too long, this would in essence give you "DR 15/-" in a way, because you could remove the subdual damage after the fight. What do you all think? |

Using the plate armor as an example, +4AC, dr 4/- would take four points off any leathal damage and convert them into non-leathal damage. A strike dealing 10 points would thus do 6 points of normal damage and 4 points of subdual damage. A character with 10 hit points to start with would now be unconscious. |

Also, something that I did not mention here, I will be using the defense bonus variant as well, so AC's will still be pretty high. Further, this is for a wuxia type game, so most characters will be martial artist types, not wearing any armor. |

Are they due to the character having a danger sense (monk-ish) and moving away before the blow lands? Are they due to the character becoming swift enough to dodge the blow? Is it simply skill in knowing when to block and when to dodge due to having been in some many similar situations before? If the answer is yes to any of the above, then I see no problem with declaring the defense bonus as stackable with armor bonus. That may cause a bit of a problem balance wise, but you state the characters are mostly monk-ish, so armor bonuses are not a major source of protection. As such, it may cause less of a problem than normal (as the armor bonus gained will be less than normal), especially if you are reducing the light / medium armor's armor bonus yet again via DR &/or conversion. I see no problem initially, but you may want to play test the idea a bit to see if it is too weak or too strong (based on whether Def stacks with Armor or another type of armor bonus). |
