| WhiteShark09-28-05, 09:15 AM | I was looking at the Rage Variant for Barbarians in Unearthed Arcana and was wondering if anyone has ever statted this out as a prestige class? Or is there a good way to convert Variants to prestige classes in general. I'm specifically asking about the Whirling Frenzy variation not the multiple Totemic variations. I'm still pretty new so if this is in the wrong section or there is a search feature please let me know. Rage Variant: Whirling Frenzy A barbarian with this variant for of rage doesn't gain the normal bonuses when he enters a rage, he temporarily gains a +4 bonus to Strength and a +2 dodge bonus to Armor Class and on Reflex saves. While in a whirling frenzy, the barbarian may make one extra attack in a round at his highest bas attack bonus, but this attack takes a -2 penalty, as does each other attack made that round. This penalty applies for 1 round, so it also affects attacks of oppourtunity the barbarian might make before his next action. Whirling frenzy is otherwise identical to the standard barbarian rage in all other ways. At 11th level (when a standard barbarian gains greater rage), the Strenght bonus increases to +6, and the dodge bonus to Armor Class and on Reflex saves increases to +3. At 20th level (when a standard barbarian gains mighty rage), the strength bonus increases to +8, and the dodge bonus to Armor Class and on Reflex saves increases to +4. A barbarian using this variant doesn't gain indomitable will at 14th level. Instead, he gains evasion, but only while in a whirling frenzy. A character can't use whirling frenzy at the same time that he uses any other form of rage (or similar ability). |

Why use a PrC when this is the only change? I'd incorporate it as a feat with prerequisites along the lines of Tireless Rage and Con 15. A barbarian who took this feat could choose to use either the standard Rage or a Whirling Frenzy interchangeably, but not both at once. |

The point is to require the barbarian to have been using the rage for a long time, such that he can start working on channeling it in different ways. BAB plus the ability to rage would be another way of doing that. As for Con, I got a little mixed up there too. I was going for a Con high enough to provide a +2 modifier, which turns out to be 14. |
