Has anyone tried this in their campaign? Has it worked out? I have yet to play a Battle Sorcerer but it looks more flavorful than the normal Sorcerer.

Reductions in spells known and spells per day in exchange for no arcane spell failure in light armor, with the BAB of a Cleric and d8 HD? Sounds almost too good to be true...

Any of the high-end (and often highly opinionated) D20 class crunchers from the PrC board looked at it yet?

All I say is that I think that I will never play a regular sorcerer again after trying this out. As is, I feel like I can compete with clerics when it comes to being a combat caster. And I also think that it makes it so the sorcerer is more defined form the wizard then just "self-taught" arcane caster. It give sit a very nice, more flavorful edge I think.

Overall, I think i'ts balanced too. You can still not learn any more spells. You loose a lot of the flexibilty of more spells a day over a wizard. And you still don't get the options of thing slike specializing, like a wizard, can, or having lotsa books and whatnot. And metamagic still sucks.

But now you can do something when you aran out of spells. Something I think is a nice tradeoff for sorcerers overall me thinks.

Stuff.

I actually passed up playing a Battle Sorc in a current campaign, in order to remain a pure Sorc. Since I am multiclass, I didn't want to lose even more of my limited spell selection to the BattleSorc's disads.

I think it is definately balanced, and can exist side by side with the Sorc. It is generically "better" than the Sorc, but the Sorc still has a place for non-warrior wannabees.

I've played one from 4th to 10th level in a DL campaign. I think its pretty balanced.

The extra HP and BaB can bring a melee sorcerer credibly into the second line. The durability really pays off. The wizard in the party tends to gets knocked silly most combats. But the battle sorcerer has only fallen once (draconian death throws). Various buff spells and feats can be chosen to make you even better. Melee touch spells are potent for a battle sorcerer. Judicious spell selection also allows you to be vastly more dangerous than the fighter next to you at range.

However, the reduced spell selection and per day really hurts. Your overall arcane flexibility is notably reduced. There is no room for mistakes in your spell selection process. So choose wisely. To add to the sting, you're still stuck with the BSorc spell progression when taking arcane prestige classes. Since any credible full caster arcane prestige class still has the usual 1/2 BaB and d4 hit die, PrCs are a lot less attractive. And as noted previously, you still have the standard sorcerer quickening problem, and metamagics are full round actions. The latter isn't all that big a deal in practice, but no quickening is the worst sorcerer drawback at higher levels.

It is my favorite class. I have found it to be more versatile than any other class. Depending on the spells you choose, you can be a death-dealer, arcane-type rogue, know-it-all, basically anything.

My favorite aspect here is the kind of half caster half fighter. We see 3/4 fighter type in the ranger, paladin, and hex blade, but this is a genuine compromise.

IMO the Battle Sorcerer is good if that's the type of character you want to play. But, if you're like me, and want a primary caster class, I suggest either the Composite Sorcerer Fix (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=224419), or Monte Cook's Varient Sorcerer (found in the Complete Book of Eldritch Might, by Malhavoc Press).

Also, if you truly intend to use the Battle Sorcerer, Check out The Comprehensive 3.5 Arcane Gish Thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=150451)

I think that the Battle Sorcerer is a great variant that brings the sorcerer up to par with the rest of the PHB. However, the idea should be taken a little further. Another sorcerer variant would be welcome, this time blending mage and expert instead of mage and warrior.

Standard Sorcerer, except:
HD: d6
BAB: Bard
Skill Points: 4+INT
Class Skills: Choose 10, plus Craft.
Proficiencies: Simple, Light Martial, Rapier, Bows, and Light Armor.
No arcane spell failure in light armor.
Reduced spellcasting, as per Battle Sorcerer.

Hmmm... at this point I notice how similar this build is to the bard. It's still different enough to justify a seperate class, IMO, but I am aware of the similarities.

The original sorcerer class never made any sense to many, and always seemed like a half-baked addition to the rules.

At least the battle sorcerer is rather distinctive -- not simply a wizard who instinctively 'knows' his spells because of his dragon blood (ugh!).

This is VERY similar to the variant sorcerer class by Monte Cook mentioned by Spirit Golem (though Cook's variant is less 'overpowered').

It is an old trick but I think what they should do is strike both the psiona dn the sorcerer from the game. Replace the sorcerer with the wilder using the psionics list for spells. Voila; two distinct classes with different flavors and spell lists.

Wilders also have d6 HP, 4 skill points and medium BAB.

But, given that this is not an option, the Battle Sorcerer is a really good class. Just enough arcane power to not lose the ability to operate at high level but enough fighting power not to be outgunned in that regard.

Nice class.
