I've already posted this in another forum but I thought I'd post it here, too. Quite simply, can the battle sorcerer variant be applied to the wizard? The Unearthed Arcana tekes 1 daily spell slot from each spell level, but the srd says this variant takes from the sorcerers list of spells known.

The book states that the battle sorcerer loses both one extra spell per day of each level and one spell known of each level. The loss of spells known is the real part that balances it, and since wizards have effectively no limit on spells known, this would be significantly overpowered unless you removed one spell known from each spell level and disallowed adding spells from scrolls or through research.

Mechanically, a wizard/fighter/eldritch knight is almost identical at most levels, if you take the PHB2 option of giving up medium and heavy armor to allow light armor casting for the wizard.

I think that option was in the Complete Mage (I don't own it, but I know that it isn't in the PHB2

I don't think that just giving up a spell slot (which may seem a lot) to gain a better attack bonus, hit day and armored casting is enough to balance out the level of power. As the Sorcerer already limited list is made smaller the character need a would need things to back up the loss of power (spells known and spells per/day being the only class aside from the familiar).

The wizard however does not have a limited list, only the limitation that come from the vancian system of magic. I would say you may have to half the number of free spell that the wizard gets from leveling, the bonus feats, and the ability to specialize in a school to balance the change out.

I stand corrected. I've recently purchase both, and I tend to get confused on that sometimes.

I do like all the new varients, though.

No, wizard isn't compatible with battle sorcerer.

A general rule for mixing varients is, "if you can't pay the price you can't take the varient."
