Better expanation of XP penalties [Archive] - Wizards Community

I have just read the section on the XP penalty in the Unearthed Arcana. I am somewhat confused as how xp penalties are calculated and the lowering of the xp penalty works. Can someone put it into simpler terms for me?

I think he's talking about 213-215. I'm confused about it too.

Oh, that one... but it does not speak about penalties :confused:

However, it is not that complicated (you are not a long-time d&d player, are you? ;) )

instead of having that rather complicated table in the DMG (table 2-6 page 38), you play with a much simpler one (table 6-14 page 214 of UA), and assign to every encounter a number of XPs solely based on the CR of the encounter, and not on the level of the PCs' party.
Then use table 6-13 page 214 of UA instead of table 3-2 page 22 of the PHB.

It's all much simpler, in fact (and old-time-flavourish :cool: )
