Better expanation of XP penalties [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-04-04, 11:55 PM I have just read the section on the XP penalty in the Unearthed Arcana. I am somewhat confused as how xp penalties are calculated and the lowering of the xp penalty works. Can someone put it into simpler terms for me?

However, it is not that complicated (you are not a long-time d&d player, are you? ;) )

instead of having that rather complicated table in the DMG (table 2-6 page 38), you play with a much simpler one (table 6-14 page 214 of UA), and assign to every encounter a number of XPs solely based on the CR of the encounter, and not on the level of the PCs' party.
Then use table 6-13 page 214 of UA instead of table 3-2 page 22 of the PHB.

It's all much simpler, in fact (and old-time-flavourish :cool: )
