| Axle_Steelcat06-28-05, 02:03 PM | How would one compensate a Warlock who forgoes the Eldrich Blast? Feats? Open or limited selection? Improved HD and BAB? (d8 and 1/1)? |
| Lawrence06-28-05, 08:25 PM | I don't know why they'd remove it, seems nutty....are they going for something in particular??? |
| Aurotuli06-28-05, 10:36 PM | By giving up their blast they are giving up their main means of offense, as well as numerous invocations specifically aimed towards diversifying / empowering their blast. I honestly do not know how to handle this. Perhaps a smll degree of casting (like a rng/pal ?), but they can choose from any list? No, that will not help them much (as they would not get fireball until level 11 or so). I do not know what to offer. Did the player say they wanted to get rid of the blast? Perhaps they have an idea of what they want (as I cannot imagine one deciding to get rid of a feature except as a prelude to adding a desired feature). If the DM is deciding this, I don't know what to tell you. Both increased BAB and increased HD are against the spirit of the class. If feats are added they should be magic only, but considering the class is not much for making items and cannot use metamagic without wasting a round each time, magic feats would be of little use to it. And combat feats make no since for it. What type of Warlock is the character building? Perhaps if you look to the bloodline equivalent and add in a free intermediate bloodline, I think that would work. Or if the character is definately using a fiendish warlock (the default type) then take specials from Acolyte of the Skin - or another fiendish PrC - and add them to the class. Just note that - no matter what you do - the class will be significantly weaker in combat at lower (pre-6th) levels. |
| srkingdavy06-29-05, 01:52 PM | Having a warlock without eldritch blast is like a fighter without weapon proficiencies... you just can't do it without completely changing the class. If the player likes the spontaneous casting just have him/her go sorcerer or warmage... |
| IceFractal06-29-05, 05:29 PM | Maybe just a lot more invocations. Faster access to more powerful invocations too, and create some new attack-based invocations. |
| Lawrence06-29-05, 10:00 PM | Certainly a few more invocations at least, otherwise his list is very limited. Course, alternatively you can convert the essance blasts into touch attacks - successful touch catches aflame or otherwise and does the usual damage per round (or penalty and so on). |
| HailSpork06-30-05, 06:30 PM | Wait, is it the PC playing the warlock doesn't want the blast? In that case, just give him a single extra invocation. If you're nice, you can let him swap out his lower-level invocation for his highest when he gains access to a new level of invocations; after all, eldritch blast does increase in power. -or- Are you house-ruling that warlocks don't get eldritch blast? In which case I'd give an extra invocation at each category of invocations. |
| lostone07-03-05, 08:40 AM | I think he is simply trying to make a variant warlock that does not have the eldritch blast. But I'm still unsure what the purpose/theme/goal for the variant would be. What it's special nitch would be. |
