Heyo, I have a question regarding the bloodlines of UA. I've got a lvl 20 warmage / lvl 1 archmage at the moment and my DM has brought up an option to reimagine my class from the start to be more beneficial to the party, since I'm always a soldier and they're more rogueish/invisible/flying.

I'm trying to figure out exactly how the bloodlines work. I'm thinking about the Ogre bloodline, but I can't understand if I'm only supposed to take levels in Bloodline every 3 levels or something, which would make my CL 18, or if there is another method to this I'm not getting. Like, do I take bloodlines as I go instead of a different class, or what? Reading through the description makes me think it's a racial trait that permeates the blood as you level, but every few levels up till 12th you have to spend a level on a Bloodline trait.

I've still got some time to ponder the ideas, but felt it might be best to ask here first. All the ideas about Bloodlines seem kind of off to me, but I'm seeing what I can do to make them viable without losing too many benefits of my currently epic level.

Hopefully my inquiry is clear enough. Sort of wondering how to level up with it, basically. Thanks.

That's pretty close. You take your levels as normal, and at each level you also get the bloodline-ability for that level. Then, at one-to-three (depending on the strength of the bloodline) points in your career, you must take an empty "bloodline level" in order to pay for those abilities, doing nothing except increasing your character level (so you will also get the bloodline ability for that level, but not hit points, BAB, saves, and so on).

Basically, this means that at level 21, which is where you're at, you would have one of the following:
- 20 class levels, 1 bloodline level from a minor bloodline.
- 19 class levels, 2 bloodline levels from an intermediate bloodline.
- 18 class levels, 3 bloodline levels from a major bloodline.

Since bloodline levels work pretty similarly to level adjustment (although not quite equal), you could ask your DM if you could use the LA Buyoff option also found in Unearthed Arcana.

Thanks for the quick reply! That is pretty much exactly what I needed to know. Hm, guess I'll see what I can do with my DM from here.

and remember, bloodline levels increase the effects of class-level dependant abilities too, so warmage18/bloodline 3 still casts spells at 21st level power (but yoru spell selection and per day are stilla t 18th)
