we've been having a discussion over here as to how one progresses in bloodlines. The examples given on page 19 and 20 of UA don't exactly explain a lot.

I think that when someone puts a level into "Bloodline Level" they don't level in anything else. It's almost like an Effective Class Level. They don't call it that because you do get some benefits for that one level (your class dependent abilities go up, such as Lay on Hands for a Paladin).

My DM (though not anymore) thought that you would still progress as a character, therefore getting a feat and the bloodline bonus at level 3, and so on, while I contested that your character level does not go up, instead your ECL will go up.

Now he's siding more with me, and I'd like to get what others think. It'd be nice to know what you think and why?

I also think that a level of 'bloodline' is essentially an addition to ECL, with the exception of also adding any bloodline benefits for that level. Thus, no hit-dice, no class skills, no class abilities, etc.

I think that feats and ability increases gained purely from character level would still add up though. So, overall, it means increasing in character level but not gaining any class levels.

That is my opinion at least.

Interesting, so you think that BL is really just another class level really, but it doesn't grant you any of the benefits other classes do - like HP, Skills, etc...

That was one side of the argument...trying to see if anyone else thinks that it is exactly like an ECL with the one exception that your current class dependant abilities increase...
