I hear mention of them and this is the only example I've seen that I can think to reference.

(example uses an LA +2 creaure in an ECL 8 campaign)
If I understand correctly I need to buy off 1 LA at level 6 for ((8ECL-1)*1000=7000xp) and then the other 1 LA at level 9 for ((10ECL-1)*1000=9000xp). Thus I would currently have only 21000xp, 6 druid levels, and ECL 7. Then when I reach ECL 10, (9 druid levels) I need to pay 9000xp and will drop to a total of 36000xp and will be a 9th level druid without LA.

Any help in clearing this up would be greatly appreciated. If it's not too much to type would anybody mind explaining it from the book?

Thanks in advance.

at every CL which is a factor of [ECLMod*3], you may pay [(ECLMod-1)*1000] XP to reduce ECLMod by 1. doing this will lower your ECL immediately, gaining you more XP in the long run, thus being a good thing.
