Cant Make Good Mechanics for this Concept [Archive] - Wizards Community

I am having a very hard time finding a way to make this work in game:

In real life I am a good at alot of thing but master at almost nothing. When I learns the basics of something its easy because its the basics. However next time I learn something basic about something else it doesnt nessisaritly get harder just becuase I learned some other basic stuff before.

The reason I'm having an issue with this is becuase the magic system I have desigend for my campaign is tree based. Only 1 class that can cast magic but 5 strains of magic that advance on their own the character picks from.
Each level they gain they can advance a step higher in that strain of magic and if they take downtime for research they can start to take levels in a new strain.

However at level 5 it takes more XP to advance a level than starting level 1 (I assume children are 'level 0' and gain their class when they reach minimum starting age). So if a Magic User can cast Shamanic Magic at level 4 but wants to start casting Elemental Sorcerery at level 1 too it cost more XP than learning that basic skill is worth, dispite it being the same ability that can be learned at lower levels for alot less.

I tryed changing it so each level cost a number of point that you gained per level. Each level you gained more so if you wanted to spend a few on basic magic of a type at higher levels and put the rest into you main school of magic thats fine but here is the problem: I cant figure out the right values to use base level 4 magic. I tryed with low numbers like 1-14 but that didnt work because things could not be divided up easily. Then with numbers like 20-100 but that was discuraging anyone playing a magic user.

I guess the same argument can be made for multiclassing in general but I would be happy of any help that can be given to me about this.

I'm a little unclear on how your system works, and why it's a problem.

Can you post a detailed explanation of your system? We'll go from there. :D

Sorry to bother. As I was typing it out to explain better I figured it out. If you still wanna hear the system then just ask.

See the multiclassing variant by Szatany in this very page.

I'm still interested in hearing how it works and how you fixed your problem.
