| BrainMole03-19-05, 01:32 AM | I'm going to introduce Mongoose Publishings Chaos Magic in my campaign in my next game session. As the basic system is unbalanced and little crude i'm thinking to work it a bit. I donīt yet have the Quintessential Chaos mage so I use my Encyclopaedia version of the book. First thing that came to my head was the system the chaos magic uses. I run Dragonstar campaign and have these long dead exile people in a prison planet who were chaos mages. This magic broke the rules of the universe and was considered unnatural so they were exiled. After reading little about Taint and Sanity rules from UA I was convinced that they could bring balance and nice flavor to the Chaos magic. Perhaps the known gods are only reflections of Ctulhu gods who have veiled themselves. Chaos magic pierces this veil and graps the raw essence from which the universe is made and uses it to create effects he needs. Things to change in chaos magic: 1) New Path system: If rolled a natural 1 on a casting check, confirmation roll vs. original DC. If failed gain a Step. I'm not a big fan of the normal Path options. Mage turning into a plant? Some of them are quite nice, though. Madness, Raging and the Shadow paths. I need some new more sinister paths to walk upon. 2) Taint: Using chaos magic corrupts the mage. How to apply properly to chaos magic? 3) Sanity: How much sanity loss and from doing what? One idea is that to become one has to learn the basics from a tome written by original chaos mages. This is considered Forbidden Knowledge. One idea was make the Casting check dependant on the ranks in Forbidden Knowledge. Chaos magic isn't known to all but the basic system is that the new core class, Chaos mage can invent spells on the fly -> determines spells effect, radious etc. to see the DC of the spell. Then he rolls a Casting check to see if he succeeded. On a critical failure the mage takes a Step in the Path. These paths can make the caster to cry little rocks and such not so nice things. The price of casting Chaos Magic. Any suggestions? I know this needs a lot of work but that's why I wrote here. |
