I am creating a light based character. Light spells and a constant light aura. I read through the Book of Exalted Deeds and found the Sainthood template. One of the abilities is "Protective Aura" which reads as follows:

Protective Aura: As a free action, a saint can surround herself with a nimbus of light having a radius of 20 feet. This acts as a double strength "magic circle against evil" and as a lesser globe of invulnerability, both as cast by a cleric whose level equal to the saint's Hit Dice.

I would love to have this on my character, but I would rather not deal with everything else the Sainthood offers (including a +2 LA) So, with that said, I would like to make this an alternative class feature. Similar to the "Pool of healing" in Complete Champion, I think it would be appropriate to sacrifice a spell slot for the use of this ability. Could I have some feed back on what level this should be available and what level spell slot this should consume?
Comments? Concerns?

Thank you

or... you might want to look at Libris Morte & the Radiance Master (or master of radiance?) very light-based class, anti-undead, also, Players guide to faerun has a feat called Initiate of Lathander, and a class called the morning lord which is similiar to but more light oriented than radiant Servent of Pelor. You may wish to examine these for ideas.

Yes, I've actually considered both of those, however I've got a structure set up.
Cleric 5/ Master of Radiance 5/ Radiant Servant of Pelor 10.

I can get the required 8 ranks of Knowledge: nature for MoR by taking the Knowledge feat. I prefer the Radiant Servant because of its healing capabilities and getting the Glory domain as a bonus domain.

I was just considering ability this as an option that I can add to this.

Did you just want to have a halo of light constantly around you, or do you also want the specific details of the protective aura? If it's just the former, you can take the Nimbus of Light and Holy Radiance feats in BoED.

But if it's the latter you want, I'm not sure how that would work. The archmage and heirophant PrCs give you spell-like abilities by sacrificing a couple of spell slots, but it's only useable a limited number of times a day, and I'm not sure how to balance it with what seems to be limitless uses.

Off the top of my head, here's a suggestion, though. Perhaps you can make a divine feat that allows something like the protective aura when you expend a turning attempt?

Just make it a spell. Call it "Halo of Divinity" or something.
