| Kheti sa-Menik03-07-06, 06:31 PM | What do people think of clerics without domains? They still have a patron diety, spells, turn/rebuke undead, spontaneously cure/inflict, but no domains. That means that they would have no domain spells or domain ability. Remove the "+1" on the Cleric Spells Per Day chart in the PHB. What does everyone think? Anyone tried this? The goal here is that I am trying to adapt a specific campaign setting into D&D rules. The Gods in this setting are more aloof to mortals so their involvement is fairly limited. To better reflect the campaign setting, I've removed certain spells from the game. In doing so, one or more spells from a number of domains are no longer in play. Has anyone played/run games with no domains but with clerics? Is there anything to watch out for? |

The first problem you would have to deal with is that you're taking away one spell per day for each level; this alone can weaken the class significantly. Another problem that you would have to concider is the loss of domain powers; again this contributes to a weaker class. In removing domains from the Cleric class, you also have removed alot of the flavor that distiguishes a member of one priesthood from another. There is also the question of keeping the class attractive enough for players that they would want to be a cleric. It's not undoable, though. Instead of doing away with that extra spell per day, roll it in with the rest of the spells. You may want to provide Clerics with an additional ability or two to offset the loss of their domain powers. Just remember that each domain power is equal to one bonus feat. As for the other two problems, you'll have to find solutions that fit your campaign. |
